  1. Don't get me wrong - im stoked on Podz. Very happy we picked him over Caufield.
  2. Idk i just don't see much of a need - we have Hughes, Rathbone, Juolevi, Woo. That's a really solid young D-corps. The remaining need to be filled - size and defensive responsibility is a commodity that's not hard to find. Hughes and Rathbone give us 2 really solid puck moving offensive defensemen. Just look at the availability of big stay at home d-men in the UFA pool this year - you can take your pick of like 5-6, and they're not that expensive. On the other hand - if we didn't have Hughes and Rathbone, I'd completely agree with you. Consider as well that a really talented goal scorer can come in and make an impact on your team immediately after they're drafted, so you get 2-3 years of scoring on a 900k ELC contract. Instead of spending 5m in free agency trying to find a goal scorer in his late 20s and paying 5m+, draft a Guenther (or someone like Caufield like Montreal did) and you get real bang for buck. Worked out great with Petey too.
  3. Yeah thats what i was thinking - albeit not suggesting it super clearly. 2 1st round picks, from a team that really sucks, so decent chance of finishing high. Someone mentioned this though - and it's a good point - if we do end up trading one of our stars to Buffalo, they instantly get better, so they probably finish higher in the standings... and our 1st rounders from them give us a weaker shot at Bedard and Wright haha.
  4. Yeah the asking price was a rumor, I had read it here: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10006698-jack-eichel-trade-rumors-sabres-seeking-assets-equivalent-to-4-1st-round-draft-picks Good point on the 1st OA vs 32nd. It kinda becomes a gamble for both parties, doing a trade like that right now, assuming the picks are unconditional. They could end up being pretty high (if buff continues to suck), or end up being low if buff improves. And yup yup all fair points, thx.
  5. Curious why you think the value is so far off - Buffalo's asking price for Eichel is the equivalent of 4 1st overall picks. I don't think Petey is worth much if any less than that. Reinhart wants to leave, and is therefore a distressed asset so his value takes a bit of a hit (probably less than 2 1st overall picks). So if Petey is worth 3-4 1sts, and we're trading for 2 1sts + a player that's got a value of 1-2 1sts, why is it so unrealistic? If I'm not seeing something, please enlighten me. Not flaming you, just curious.
  6. Hey if the price is really worth it.. If he has a stellar year next year, + if Rathbone ends up becoming what we think he's gonna be.. why not? We'd get an absolutely insane return for him.
  7. You're right about another year for QH - give him really big and defensively responsible partner, and he'll have an unbelievable year. If we want to trade him, that'd be the time.
  8. Yeah I tend to agree. I rly don't want to see us give away a ton of assets just to shed cap, when all we need to do is be patient for 1 year. I do think the ED gives us a window of opportunity to poach some cost controlled assets from teams likely to lose someone good to Seattle - like Greenway and Mayfield, for a pretty good deal. I'm with you though - I don't think we're THAT far from competing. 1 top 6 winger (shame we couldn't afford to keep Toffoli at the time - this would already be taken care of), 1 point-producing 3rd line winger, and 1-2 big, gritty defensive d-men, and we're a very different looking team. 2 hard trades would do it.
  9. Yeah haha I really don't mind Myers. The contract was long, but he's a pretty unique commodity. He's big + can put up points, not easy to find that. Scary slapshot too. Would really like to see what he can do with a partner that's a bit more defensive minded. Preferably another 9 foot tall behemoth like Oleksiak.
  10. Yeah its a good point about Skinner. I think someone will take a chance on Eichel, but Skinner.. nah. And if they are screwed for the next 5 years, you're right - they may as well keep their chances of landing 2 generational talents.
  11. There ya go - discussion points! I like it. That was the whole point of the topic. 1. Yes - this is accurate! That's why my point was "they've probably got the best chances of picking 1st in 2022 and 2023". We'd have no chance of trading for the 1OA once the spot has been confirmed in either of those two drafts - Wright and Beard being generational talents, it just wouldn't make any sense to trade once the spot has solidified. But.. I wanted some thoughts from folks on a. the odds of Buffalo picking 1st in either of those two drafts, and b. the desire Buffalo may have for stars that can play now, rather than entering yet another rebuild. 2. Sedins?- Nope I'm wrong - we got the #2 and #3 overall, and made a deal so we could get the Sedins I didn't make this post with a specific trade in mind - rather, in what circumstances might it make sense to acquire the 1st rounders from the team that's most likely to pick 1st in two drafts that will have generational talents.
  12. Yeah I mean - me too. We've found great value in the top 10, outside of picking top 3. Petey, Hughes, Podz probably too. Just imagining what it'd be like to have a once in a generation talent like Bedard. But if we had to sell everything to get him - its not worth it. Especially after the ELC is done - the massive contract TO gave to Auston Matthews, Edmonton gave to McDavid.. I don't think these top heavy deals do the team any favors. Patel Bure makes a very interesting point about an "internal cap" - and I tend to agree. If we can keep our top player to like 6.5-7m/year, it sets the stage for much better value contracts.
  13. Jus sayin stop being a little prick and we'll all be good. Ideas are for discussion - personal attacks are really not welcome, nor do they make you look smart. So sit down and mind your manners, child.
  14. Hopefully then we can get more for him - Schmidt for 2nd Rounder and a prospect (maybe we have to retain some salary Idk). I still think we should trade him if we can - that 6m can really help us in other areas, given Rathbone's readiness.
  15. I'm pretty convinced Schmidt gets traded this off season tbh. He's a great player, but really not what we need. Rathbone will do what he can, and we can add some badly needed size, shot blocking, and intimidation. Unfortunately - it looks like Schmidt really wants out and those rumors are gonna drop the price. I don't wanna lose Miller, but if we got a deal with Calgary - Schmidt + picks for Tkachuk, we should take it and run.
  16. Agreed he's worth more - but him actually wanting a trade + his contract is going to make other GMs squeeze us. Most teams won't be able to afford taking on a 6m contract at this point. Rathbone was a nice surprise, and changes the game for us imo. It's not about getting absolute top dollar for Schmidt, its about getting the best lineup as a result.
  17. Okay here's my thinking - Buffalo is a tragedy. Everyone wants out, and they've also spent so long "rebuilding", I doubt they can afford to do another full rebuild through the draft. We know they're still gonna stink for a couple years no matter what - its going to take time to right the ship, and so they've probably got the best chances of picking 1st in 2022 and 2023.. When Shane Wright and Connor Bedard will be draft eligible respectively. What would we have to give up to get those two picks? Would you part with one of our stars (Hughes or Petey) for both picks + Reinhart? Imagine if we got both Wright AND Bedard.... We'd be the new Pittsburgh w Crosby and Malkin.
  18. 1. To Van - 3rd Rounder To Phil- Nate Schmidt Yes Nate Schmidt is good, yes this was a down year for him, but with Rathbone up and coming, that 6m is far better spent on a defensive specialist, and upgrade to our 3rd line. Plus, yet another rumour surfaced that he wants out. Philly gets a really good top 4 puck moving d-man. 2. To Van - Scott Mayfield To NYI- 2nd Rounder Why does NYI do this? Expansion draft protection issues. Mayfield is likely the odd man out- even though he is well loved and on a great contract, Pulock, Pelech, Leddy all need to be protected, along with a bunch of forwards. Why does Vancouver do this? 1.5m contract for size and defensive responsibility, can kill penalties effectively. 3. Van-Col To Van - Joonas Donskoi To Col- 2022 2nd rounder + 2021 3rd rounder Why does Colorado do this? Minimize expansion draft losses - they now have a spot to protect Nichushkin, and get 4m off their books. Why does Vancouver do this? Legitimate top 6 winger who can score - likely costs us less than poaching Greenway from Minny (cost for him probably a 1st). UFA's: Oleksiak - 3x4.5m Palmieri - 2x3m (if we can make enough room, burying eriksson, getting Seattle to take Hotlby, etc.) TLDR: Schmidt's contract (which is expensive now, and will likely not age well) gets replaced by a top 6 winger + a defensively responsible and big D-man. + We add size on the back end by signing Oleksiak. Next years lineup: Donskoi-Petey-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Pearson Palmeiri-Miller-Podkolzin Motte-Beagle-Highmore Hughes-Oleksiak Mayfield-Myers Edler-Rathbone *Juolevi
  19. Yeah if they can't get Parise to waive his NMC, and if they decide to protect Dumba, Greenway probably gets left unprotected. I think he's probably the best target we can go after given his age, price of his contract, and the fact he could be an effective top 6 for us. Not to mention, it'd be inexpensive enough for us to go and get another good top 9 who can score, and we can roll 3 lines. Greenway-Petey-Boeser Hoglander-Horvat-Pearson Top 9-Miller-Podkolzin Motte-Beagle-Highmore Add a proper defensive partner for Hughes (Larsson, Savard, Oleksiak), resign Edler, and next year is gonna be a lot of fun to watch.
  20. Yeah this would basically solve their expansion draft issues. They can protect Dumba. We might need a little more tbh - I think the price for Greenway is probably our 1st + a prospect, without a 1st coming back, but we'll see i guess. I don't think we'd be the only bidders for Greenway, especially considering the value of his contract for next year.
