Yeah this is a good take. I imagine OEL and Hamonic are gonna crunch up the most minutes- and now with Schenn we've got some really solid depth. I'm not worried about it at all. OEL, Myers, Hamonic, Hughes, Juolevi, Poolman, Schenn - all perfectly capable NHL D-men. -

I don't think Rathbone plays much this year tbh. We've only really got room for 1 small powerplay specialist. I think Myers stays with Juolevi if Juolevi is in the lineup this year Maybe: OEL-Hamonic Hughes-Poolman Juolevi-Myers *Schenn -

[Signing] Blackhawks sign Jake McCabe

Yeah Poolman + Schenn for less than a fresh-off-injury McCabe was a good deal -
[Signing] Canucks sign Luke Schenn

You know, the more I think about it, I think Myers could actually be really good beside OEL. OEL is solid defensively, Myers doesn't have to be perfect. The two of them together would be an absolute terror to play against too. I'm pretty excited to see the matchups they try out. Hamonic did good beside Hughes, probably will do even better now that they're not going to be matching up against other team's top lines. I really like too that Poolman played on the PK in winnipeg. That gives us 3 solid PK d-men, OEL, Hamonic, Poolman. Good contract too - tradeable and bury-able if needed. -

Sooo what we've got on the left: OEL, Hughes, Juolevi On the right: Hamonic, Poolman, Myers Going to reserve judgement on Poolman til we see him in a few games, and gonna try to find some Winnipeg footage. But if he can block shots and be a solid stay at home guy, this excites me -

[Proposal] Signing Getzlaf, Keeping Edler and Schmidt
eeeeergh replied to Zoolander's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I agree with keeping Schmidt, but we really don't need Edler now. OEL is coming in to replace Edler - and is going to be better than Edler ever was for us. Also your D pairs are all wonky - you have Edler on the right side, Rathbone on the right side, and you've got Hughes with Rathbone (that pairing is going to have the worst +/- in the history of the NHL). Remember that OEL is a top pairing, offensively dynamic d-man who is fairly defensively aware and responsible. He doesn't need a slow stay at home partner that'll chip the puck out to center ice to escape - he needs someone who can keep up and plays a similarly balanced style. Given that Schmidt's natural side is his right side (even though he shoots left), this makes Schmidt the perfect partner for OEL. They play complementary styles and would be an absolute nightmare to play against. Together they'd be a bigger offensive threat than Hughes currently is, and wouldn't be defensive liabilities. OEL-Schmidt (one of the best pairings in the league) Hughes-Savard (or some other stay at home rhd d that can let Hughes do his thing- and against lesser lines b/c other teams will be busy trying to handle OEL/Schmidt) Juolevi-Myers (Juolevi played great defensively last year, will continue to improve, and Myers is prone to make way fewer gaffes when he's not shouldering top pairing responsibilities and minutes. Personally I think Myers will thrive in this role - he can play his game which is more offensive-orientated, against inferior opponents) Every one of our D pairings becomes a threat, and none would be liabilities. There's enough defensive responsibility in there to build a couple PK units- OEL, new stay at home guy like Savard, eventually Juolevi... This isn't the time to re-sign edler, we need a big upgrade on the right side in the form of a stay at home d-man to round out the vision -
I don't think Schmidt gets traded, and if he does, Savard is not likely to be OEL's partner.. maybe Myers. The big stay at home D man is needed for Hughes, OEL is perfectly capable defensively (a pretty good PK'er actually). With Schmidt: OEL-Schmidt (holy F*** thats amazing) Hughes-Savard (hahah good luck to other teams when they've had to match against OEL and Schmidt) Juolevi-Myers (Juolevi was really solid defensively last year, I expect him to be even better, and therefore a great partner for Myers) *Rathbone Without Schmidt: OEL-Myers (not as amazing but pretty good) Hughes-Savard Rathbone-Hamonic *Juolevi Much better with Schmidt imo.

Trading picks is fine if you've already built your core, which he has, and he did it through the draft. Demko, Horvat, Boeser, Petey. Hoglander. We've also got Juolevi, Rathbone, and Podkolzin coming up. No team gets 100% built through the draft, and at the end of the day, he can trade away every single pick we ever have as long as he's getting better value in return. He got outsized value when he traded for Miller. He got outsized value here too. Garland makes the kind of impact you expect an extremely successful 1st round pick to make. Does it really matter how we got him - through drafting him, versus trading a pick to get him?
-
Honestly the picks really don't matter in this deal. In an average year, you may hit on 2/7 of your picks. Yes we traded away picks, but we got a guaranteed roster player, who also happens to be a bona fide top 6. We basically traded Dylan Guenther away for Conor Garland. Take that deal any day and run fast before the other team changes their mind haha

yup yup yup honestly with this move, im now a huge JB fan. He drafted an incredible core for us, and now he's undone his bad contracts in 1 move. I don't care what anyone says, OEL is a beast. He played on the PP, PK, matchup minutes, and was over 0.5 ppg playing disgruntled for a terrible team. Garland makes our top 6 incredibly dangerous, and our third line gets a lot better with Pearson (presumably) and Dickinson. I imagine that's also a good spot for Podkolzin to play if he's ready to make the leap. Miller-Petey-Boes Hogs-Horvat-Garland Pearson-Dickinson-Podz Motte-4C-Highmore OEL-Schmidt Hughes-BigRHD(savard?) Juolevi-Myers Rathbone That's a team that's ready to contend imo.
-
100% agree. Schmidt plays best on the right side, and OEL has the defensive awareness that comes with being a top PK unit guy. I'm thinking he makes a perfect partner for Schmidt, and they make each other a whole lot better. Savard to play with Hughes, and lets Hughes run up the score b/c teams are busy trying to match up against OEL and Schmidt. OEL-Schmidt Hughes-Savard Juolevi-Myers Rathbone
