Gaudette was one of those long shot bets that Benning likes to make in the later rounds.  He has some good qualities and some deficiencies which is pretty much why he fell to the 5th round.  That and his commitment to college.

Elite Prospects scouting report (presumably from his draft year)

An all-around forward that loves to compete and can play multiple roles. Strong and fast on his skates and is hard to knock off the puck. Likes to go hard to the net, where time and space is reduced. Offensively, there is a lot of flare to his game as he doesn't give the opposition a lot of time to react; gets shots off quickly and thinks ahead when making plays. Doesn't shy away from the physical game either and looks for different kinds of opportunities to create energy. Responsible defensively and transitions up-ice quickly. Gaudette is the kind of player that can be a difference-maker in a game in multiple ways. [EP]

How is he at the NHL level?  Compete?  Yes.  Strong?  No.  Fast?  Average.  Hard to knock off the puck?  Hell no.  Hard to the net?  Likes to, does he?  Not much.  Gets shots off quickly?  Yes.  Physical game?  Doesn't shy away but gets dominated.  Responsible defensively?  Meh.  Difference maker?  No.

Also, face offs?  No.  PK? No.  PP?  2nd, produced little (but Canucks rely heavily on 1st unit)

Face it, Gaudette is behind Petey and Horvat and in no way is going to replace either and has shown little that would make you think that he could move up the line up in case of injury.  He has pretty much been playing as a 4th liner and been partnered with 3rd line quality wingers (Roussel and Virtanen) a lot of the time and the 4C (Beagle) has been getting more ice because he is at least defensively sound and wins face offs so the line can at least retain possession to start.  But I think his biggest issue is his size.  Gaud is 6'1" and 170 which is not going to get a player who got here by playing a physical game in college very far in this league.  Bottom line, he is not hard to play against and I think that based on his ppg (0.35) is destined to be an over priced 4C.  He is 25 now and seems to have plateaued in his development.  He is what he is.

So Benning cut bait for a player who has lesser skills but may actually be able to hold a spot on the team that is needed.  A 4th line winger who can play centre.

I'm not saying that Highmore is any screaming hell and it remains to be seen if he makes the team long term but he's getting an audition.

No one's saying Gaudette is some hidden 1st line player. The point is asset management, we are not even a contender, still just a bottom feeding team 7 long years under this management. You don't trade a 24 year old on pace for 46 points last season playing just 12 minutes a game for nothing. Even if Gaudette's last season performance is just an anomaly, at least get a 3rd rounder back. Benning's ability to wait and make the right trade is 0. Just like when he rushed the Kesler trade 2 months into his job. When it's been proven again and again in the league waiting for the right trade ripes the rewards. Look at how the Duchene trade is doing wonders for Avalanche.

  2. Sorry, not trading Virtanen( a #6 pick) + 3rd for a 9million dollars PK Subban that "might work" as our bottom pairing. Not like NJ Devils will take the deal any way; stop underestimating how unplayble Ericsson is. The only reason we have been playing him at all the last few years is because how stubborn Green/Benning is. At this point, if NJ had extra cap space of 3-4 million, they should use it to grab a 1st or 2nd round pick, that's how the market is nowadays.

The once we pay Ericsson's bonus on July 1st, he will be traded. I have seen that for 3-4 years, eh?

  3. Im sitting here laughing at people analyzing Highmore's play trying to put a positive spin on this trade. When this was obviously a Benning let's get rid of Gaudette asap and get whatever is available on the market trade. Highmore, no matter how gritty and grindly he is, the best he could be is a Motte type of player, a 3rd/4th liner who could be easily upgradable either by a prospect or in the open market. He is no Adam Lowry. I could always eat my words here, but what I have described is highly probable and not worth my time to follow deeper.

Laughable, RY JO has one off year and now he's Skinner. The entire Nashville team has been sub par. Every other team in the NHL would love to have Johansen on their team except for you...

Johansen had a down year? More like he was never "really" good to begin with. He was traded and signed to a big contract based on his "potential" and he is failing miserably on that count. Are you Ryan Johansen posting to try to get traded to Vancouver?

  5. Well may be learn not to care too much about the media instead? If you play for a hockey crazed city in Vancouver, you are almost like a celebrity. Media will scout and report anything that catches the eyeballs. So how do celebrities deal with it? Dont give a care to it and just do your job.

Instead of trying to change the media, which is probably impossible.

Man this thread is HILARIOUS. People are always looking to crap on the Pearson deal when such a position doesn't make any sense.

First off, guy is a center, not a winger, so Pearson and Lowry aren't equivalent there. But if we're looking at points, Pearson outscores Lowry quite a bit, in spite of being roughly the same age.

    https://www.nhl.com/player/adam-lowry-8476392

    Lowry has 65 goals, 78 assists = 143 points in 452 games.

This season, he had 8 goals 12 assists = 20 points in 44 games. It wasn't really a standout year compared to his other years.

    Pearson has 114 goals, 112 assists = 226 points in 490 games.

Pearson had a pretty bad season. 6 goals, 5 assists = 11 points in 33 games.

So no, @250Integra Lowry is not better than Pearson. The thing that Lowry has going for him is that he's a center who happens to win a decent amount of faceoffs. Aside from that, they have different roles, with Pearson being a significantly higher scorer.

3.25 is arguably an overpayment, or at the very least an average signing for Lowry, but of course no one else is going to mention that. We'll just have to keep going on the bash Pearson bandwagon for no reason, right?

People need to take things into perspective, instead of just looking to confirm a bias that is present on these boards.

Get out and watch some hockey if you think 3.25 mil for Lowry is overpaid lmao.

Are you really slamming the books at a 3C that Pearson scores more than him, lol. What does Pearson do exactly? He is sloted in the 2nd LW and gets to easily pot up points; he even gets powerplay time. Think of all the different assignments Lowry gets every game as 3C vs the opposition.

  7. I'm leaning to say no.

Things are stale. Not much to look forward to. The team doesn't have the compete level, chemistry, structure. Only thing going is hopeully the young uns continue to imrpove ie. Pettersson/Hughes/Beoser, but this is not even a sure thing.

All eyes on the offseason. If Benning can repeat similarly to what he did last year, then he has my vote of confidence. Adding Schmidt, signing Hamonic for cheap, letting go of Tanev/Markstrom/Toffoli; etc... I highly praise those moves even though that's not the norm.

AND, we need a coach change. No matter how much you like Green, change is needed.

You know it's funny. People here are screaming at Benning for not realizing that Pettersson and Hughes' contracts are due, even though he's the same GM who drafted them and oversaw their successes. LOL.

Does this move show that Benning is making space? Yes. Do the fans bitch about it? Yes. Gaudette really wasn't going to amount to anything more on the Canucks. That much was perfectly clear.

Sorry, that's ridcious. Gaudette costs 950K, the minimum we need to fill 1 roster spot. What I think you are trying to say is just lol.... meh.

They're discussing Highmore/Gaudette and how Gaud sees himself as a top 6 and there wouldn't be a fit for him here in relation to that.  That he wasn't a guy they relied on in the playoffs and he didn't take that extra step they'd expected.

That Highmore is touted as:  a guy who'll do whatever's asked of him.  High motor, better skater (Gaud with more talent).  Will go to the net every time.  Comparing him to a Motte kind of player?

Gaudette is definitely not a top 6. What he thinks he is hardly matters. But during his 153 games here I think we have only given him ice time above 15 minutes only on a few occasions. This is no matter how well he played. That's a problem. There is no work hard, get reward ladder for him. Hoglander on the other hand magically slots into the 2nd line and gets 17 minutes of game time his second game playing for us. Same for Vessey whos done nothing for us and pretty much an unproven NHL player.

While I agree with some of the sentiment, I don’t agree with the Highmore being “nothing.”

Sure, I’m not a fan of the value. Even after getting past the shock of Gauds getting moved (I followed him through college, watched a lot of his games, and have a soft spot for him), and trying to look at the trade through an objective lens, I still value this as a “bad trade.” (Honestly, on pure value, there’s probably not enough Leipsic in the world for me to give a glow up to this pig of a trade.)

However, just viewed as a roster addition, I do like the process behind picking up a guy like Highmore, and think he could end up being a good fit for the 4th line. He represents the kind of cheap, younger, cost controlled player we should be using to fill “role player” slots in the lineup.

And given how the organization seems to have come to view Gaudette, this wasn’t “unnecessary.” They were clearly moving away from him, so at least they made a move and extracted some value.

I just don’t like the value, but I still like the new guy we added, in Highmore.

Yes. Look on the bright side. Highmore can turn out to be the Motte trade. Though Highly unlikely.

The Gaudette trade could have played out much better. We have plenty of time to move him for an average return like a 3rd round or something. Why rush at the TDL with no takers because he just got COVID for Highmore? Playing the rest of the 19 games, Gaudette absolutely stinks it and we lose him for nothing in the summer, I am actually way more fine with this than trading him now for Highmore lol.

But you know what... May be this is a locker room problem?

Like other players hate Gaudette for spreading COVID, not following protocols or something like that. Putting it this way, it can make sense.

  11.  Well Mantha is 26 years old already, and Detriot isn't going anywhere for a few years... So it does kind of make sense.  Yzerman getting some nice value back especially when Vrana is pretty good too. Seems like young players with potential cant develop in Washington, gets overshadowed by Ovechkin and co. Forsberg, Burakovsky and now Vrana

Hobey baker and 33 points yes. Still had no value none the less so I think the real issue here is your ability to evaluate a hockey player.

If you cant even manage to trade a 24 year old who scored 33 points last year for some value back, you shouldn't be a GM. It actually doesnt matter if Gaudette is good or not. You sell him like a salesman. And Benning gets Highmore rofl.
