  1. trading Kesler to Anaheim might eventually give them a 12-0 win in a hockey game

    .... not that 9-1 wasn't bad enough

anyways, to be serious here. trading kesler to anaheim will be like.. sedins playing against two corey perrys

Not sure why so many people here are promoting the idea as a way to make Canucks fans happy. Esp. for the ho-hum returns being mentioned.

    Oooooh, Vatanen...

  2. Anyone see Sonny Milano's sick stick trick video?

The kid has some serious skill. Strange he's not talked about often here. He's perhaps overshadowed by Eichel, but he's definitely legit in his own right. He scored as many points as Eichel in the U18.

Tuch is ranked higher, but mainly because of his pure size advantage. Either would be a solid, solid pick. (Esp. when we end up with Eichel next year.) ;)

  3. Found this tidbit on HF to be interesting:

Re: Interviews --> I'm not sure how common it is league-wide, but Buffalo has a mental skills coach in Dr. Barbara Meyer and judging by 2013's combine video, she basically looks to catch prospects with an off-guard question or two because she knows they're coached up to answer typical ones. Also, AGM Kevin Devine added in that video that Mike Weber was an example of a past draftee that actually bumped himself up their list with his interview.

Wondering if the Canucks will be using something of the sort. Jim Benning was Buffalo's amateur scouting director at the time this mental skills coach was put in place for the Mike Weber example.

  4. Not even the brother of the most visciously attacked NHLer of all time has any respect for other players' noggins.

Moore didn't even think twice about it either. Why? Because he'll sit 2 games, tops. Big freakin' deal. Oh, and his last name is Moore. Cheapshot family I guess.

There is no hope in the NHL curbing this until they finally get serious.

  5. Gillis also took this team from out of the playoffs to the finals in 3 seasons. It's not like he didn't know what he was doing.

However, like all Canadian teams in the Bettman era, making the finals meant imminent collapse of the team, with all sorts of BS drama surrounding the team during that time. It's called entertainment. But I'm not all that amused by it.

What disappoints me most of the Gillis era is that Detroit long-term success was promised and all we ended up with was another repeat of the Canadian cycle of bullcrap.

Hopefully Benning signals the end of that bs, but I think it will just signal the start of another cycle. The wildcard is Linden. Is him coming into the fold the start of something special? Or was it just a panic hire?

  6. Looks like the Russian win came with some controversy.

    http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/russia-wins-2014-world-championship-as-vladimir-putin-looks-on-and-conspiracy-theorists-have-a-field-day/

At some point during the IIHF World Championship final, the Finnish media paid at least as much attention to the people in two luxury boxes as to the action on the ice.

In one, there was Oleg Znarok, Russias coach who had been suspended after he made a cut-throat gesture to Swedens assistant coach Rikard Gronborg (who yelled back that he would bleeping kill him), but who was in radio contact with his assistant Harijs Vitolins behind the Russian bench.

In the other, there were Russian president Vladimir Putin and IIHF president Rene Fasel, watching the game together enough for some to scheme up all kinds of conspiracy theories.

In the title game, Finland was the proxy for all things West. That the Russian team didnt seem to respect the suspension made at least the Swedish and Finnish journalists irate, and several Swedish journalists went public with their cheering for Finland.

This is where were at right now: whoever is playing against Russia is playing for the rest of the world. Its the KHL versus the NHL, its the big, bad Russians against the West, and its about sticking it to Putin (and what at least the Finnish fans perceive as a questionable environment of international hockey).

Which may also explain why the Finnish fury towards the on-ice officials was so powerful. The whole nation was standing behind the team that had 15 World Championship rookies and limped into the playoff stage, having had to rely on Switzerland beating Latvia in their final group stage game.

In this episode of Miracle, these unknown Finnish league players were now the college kids whod take on the Big, Red Machine and their Ovechkins and Malkins and Bobrovskys.

It doesnt help that technically Znarok hadnt broken the rules, as Fasel had said that he cant be involved physically with the team prior to the game or during the game. Physically being the operative word. (And apparently meeting with the assistant coach outside the arena doesnt qualify as getting physical with the team, either).

What is not forbidden is permitted.

There was also a hockey game. From the first shift, it was obvious there was no love lost between the two teams. In the first shift, Erik Haula tried to check Evgeni Malkin in the corner, but instead, he got Malkins stick in his face, which started a scrum in which Olli Jokinen, team captain, went after Malkin.

Finland had its chances, but couldnt capitalize on its power play opportunities, while Russia did. Some of the calls were questionable, but then again, weve seen curious officiating in the Worlds before. Jaromir Jagr called the refereeing in this tournament the worst hes seen.

When I get back to the NHL, Ill congratulate the referees there after every game (for being so good), he said.

Malkin scored the game winner in Russias 5-2 triumph on a 5-on-3 power play in the second period. Unfortunately, in the IIHF stats ticker, the time of the goal was wrong and corrected later, which only fueled the conspiracy theories.

Its hard to argue against those who called Russia the best team in the tournament, as they only allowed 10 goals in the event. Alexander Ovechkin got to hoist the World Championship trophy for the first time as Team Russias captain, and then it was time for the team to throw their coach in the air. Even though his suspension specifically included any post-game ceremonies.

Maybe the Finns will get more sympathetic towards Russian players next season, when Helsinki Jokerit joins the KHL. To know them is to understand them.

First off, do euro countries get more amped about this championship only because they can win it?

Secondly, as bad as NHL reffing seems, it looks like international hockey has far worse reffing. (The botched womens 2014 olympic final comes to mind. But the mens tourney was fine.)

And lastly, it appears that hockey conspiracy talk branches beyond the NHL. (Duh.)

  7. I loved watching Pavel Bure when he was a Canuck. No one that has entered the NHL looks more like Pavel on the ice than Ehlers. Not saying Ehlers can be Bure, but Bure Light would be entertaining and no doubt make the Canucks competitive again.

    Good God. Let it end.

  8. precisely.

a claim like 'there are no franchise players in this draft' is like pretending to know what the weather will be on this day in 2019.

These kind of forecasts are made by scouts every draft. Of course they can be wrong, and of course franchise players on weak teams are still franchise players, sortof, but if there are questions of Ekblad's 'franchise' quality at this point, then it's a pretty safe bet the prognosis of our 6th pick will not be 'franchise player'. And that's perfectly fine. I didn't expect one. I expect a significant building block, but not the guy who can bring this team a cup.

Next year we should use the draft to acquire one. If we don't, then I guess we need to be really crafty otherwise. Boston signed theirs as a UFA, for example. San Jose and Dallas got theirs via trade.

Chicago, Philly, Pittsburgh, LA, Vancouver, Washington, NYR, Car, TB, Det, Ott, Winnipeg, Nash, Anaheim, Minny, CBJ, StL, Colorado, Montreal, Edmonton, NYI, Florida, Cgy and Buffalo all got theirs via the amateur draft.

Collecting another teams' garbage is a TO-style move.

  9. "And the stone that the builder refuse shall be the head cornerstone."

    Who's refusing?

We'll probably need a franchise player, one that can win, if we hope to win. And I think we want to win. At least I hope.

In this draft not even Ekblad is regarded as a franchise player. But next years' draft has some franchise players.

    ...

"If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail."

    edit: I can relax.

Linden: "We are going to pick a player that is going to be a cornerstone for this franchise."

It's only unreasonable fans that put such labels on 'alright' prospects. Like Horvat is the next Toews and such.

  10. Canucks usually find way to mess up and pick the wrong player at draft. That's why people are calling for scouts to be gone. Especially when Linden says the player they pick will be the cornerstore of this organization for years to come.

Since there are no franchise players in this draft, I hope he said a cornerstone.
  11. If this team is ever to win, the team/media/fan relationship needs to be repaired.

    -Winning-capable, driven talent.

-Ultra-homeristic, Canucks can do no wrong coverage.

    -Savage fanatics in the stands.

It's quite aways away, but when the time comes we should all realize it's One goal, One objective, One purpose. Get this team a cup.

Right now the talent is broken, the media is from TO, and the fans are easily misled rioters.
