  1. It's nearly $4.8m so closer to $5m than $4m. Those also would have been the final 2 years of OEL's contract. If we retained 50% on him for each of those last 2 years, it would have been significantly better overall.
  2. You can quote me now. OEL is gonna sign some dirt cheap contract with a contender next year and play like a top 4 dman on the 3rd pair. It's gonna make us look really stupid.
  3. No, we are stuck with the dead cap for 8 years. There's no way out of this now. It's done.
  4. So 1 or 2 years of a Bear quality defenceman. Then what about those 2 years where the dead cap is $4.8M per year?
  5. So how much could we spend on another replacement defenceman to obtain the same cap hit as before with improved defence? 7,260,000 - 2,346,667 = 4,913,333 7,260,000 - 4,766,667 = 2,493,333 7,260,000 - 4,766,667 = 2,493,333 7,260,000 - 2,126,667 = 5,133,333 7,260,000 - 2,126,667 = 5,133,333 7,260,000 - 2,126,667 = 5,133,333 7,260,000 - 2,126,667 = 5,133,333 So basically, the Canucks will need to find a defenceman that is $5M or less in terms of cap hit to come out ahead in this.
  6. A Bear-level defenceman at 4.5M is the equivalent to nearly a 7M cap hit including the dead cap. In those 2 years of $4.8M dead cap, it's like paying Ethan Bear $9.3M for 2 years in a row! It's brutal.
  7. Is he even healthy enough to play? He's one big hit from LTIR.
  8. Such as? Low cap hit, top 4 defencemen are not usually the ones that capped out teams dump...
  9. Who exactly is gonna be able to play top 4 minutes in a shut down role? Unless you feel Hughes is gonna be our guy for shut down duties.
  10. Lol right? People keep bringing up Minny. That's nice, lemme know when Minny is a Stanley Cup contender with their dead cap on the books.
  11. That'd be the best case scenario. An ELC capable of playing top 4 LHD minutes. That'll eat up the worst years of this buyout. Maybe we move down in the draft to pickup an extra 2nd round pick and draft Simashev in the 1st round.
  12. Mayfield and Graves will both go for $5M+. No way a top 4 RHD UFA is gonna sign for $4M x 3 lol
  13. I find it hilarious that the Avs and their fans were fine with a $6M Erik Johnson playing on the 3rd pair of their elite Stanley Cup winning roster, but here we are buying out OEL to just have to replace him with another top 4 LHD that will be making at least $5M AAV. So from next year onwards: $2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman $4.5M dead cap + $5M = $9.5M for replacement defenceman $4.5M dead cap + $5M = $9.5M for replacement defenceman $2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman $2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman $2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman $2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman woo hoo... we're SO far ahead now.
  14. I don't think any Stanley cup winner had dead cap from a buyout on their books. So be ready to wait at least 8 more years before the Canucks have a shot at a cup.
  15. Yeah, but that same $5M competent dman in 2025-26 and 2026-27 would be a $9.5M cap hit ... a cap hit larger than Cale Makar. There's just no way we'd have a championship roster carrying nearly $5M in dead cap for those 2 years. We'd better hope to win a cup within 2 years, or more than 4 years from now.
  16. No. We are stuck with this for 8 years now.
  17. Likely after the bonus is paid out. Thing is, there's no rush to do so anymore.
  18. The thing is, once Myers is gone, we OFFICIALLY have TWO top 4 defencemen under contract. Hughes and Hronek. That's it. We are now on the hunt for two top 4 defencemen.
  19. Just for math's sake cuz I like math sometimes... $2,126,667 of a $95M upper cap limit is about 2.2% of the cap. 2.2% of the cap in today's $82.5M upper cap limit is $1.85M. So we're basically gonna be handicapped a solid bottom 6 forward or a defenceman like Ethan Bear for 5 out of the next 8 years. Another way to look at it is we'll be paying $6.85M for a $5M replacement LHD for 5 out of the next 8 years (and nearly $10M for that same $5M LHD for 2 out of the next 3 years).
  20. Here's a rough forecast for the next 5 years that includes OEL's buyout. Projections/estimates are in blue. It's not terrible, but I think we will run into some cap issues in 2024-25 and 2025-26 unless we make additional trades, or unless the cap goes up a lot more than a projected.
  21. Yeah I didn't think we'd be stupid enough to do this either. Seeing a $6M anchor contract on the Avs 3rd pair during their Stanley Cup winning run, I figured we could ride OEL on the 3rd pair and get by. Instead, we pay dead cap every year now for 8 years. Unbelievable.
  22. Welp... it happened. So.... lemme get to work on Excel for an update lol
  23. If they bring in Noah Hanifin for pennies on the dollar, then I'd feel better.
