I’m going to the first playoff game on Wednesday and will see Danila after the game. If you have any questions for him - reply to this post. I’ll try to ask.

Question for Danila: What has he enjoyed about playing in Abbotsford? What has he enjoyed about living in BC?

    Thank you!

Yup. The same owner who supported the many new ideas Gillis had to get the best out of the players. IMHAO we do have a good owner, he just developed an arrogance about his hockey knowledge because he saw himself as involved in the success Gillis had. Our owner actually fired our most successful GM ever and replaced him with our worst ever. And did that because the most successful GM wanted to rebuild the core and the owner thought he knew better. It’s why we had the whole Bruce fiasco this season. If our owner would just stay out of hockey decisions then JR would have replaced Bruce last summer.

Gillis did a lot of good things for the team, but the price he had paid, which was the Canucks future, should always be acknowledged. It was very expensive. He showed his true colours when the core was in decline. You can tell because he drafted poorly. You can't build a team without a good draft.

Later first + mid second. That’s a steal for Hronek. He’s an elite right shot D just entering his prime. Great trade for us. That’s how smart managers build winners. Detroit is hoping to find a guy with one of those picks, who in 5 years might be close to Hronek’s ability. Steal.

It's not a steal. They turned their own developed 2nd round pick into TWO second round picks (we will both agree that the 1st round pick is essentially a very high second rounder). Our pick itself is a decently high 2nd rounder. This is called selling high.

Meanwhile, we haven't sold high on any of our assets. The Horvat return is just ok. The Islanders aren't regretting the trade (yet). Horvat has helped the Islanders make it into the playoffs. They were actually out of the playoff spot at the time of the trade.

I can't find the article, but I thought he also said that Brad Aldrich was a good man (He's the guy who assaulted Beach)

Here is a refresher on Toews comments when the story broke about Kyle Beach. The guy is a f**king tool. f**k Toews.

With any luck he'll shatter both legs tonight.

    https://www.bleachernation.com/blackhawks/2021/10/28/kane-and-toews-speak-beach-aldrich-bowman-consequences-more/

Yeah... I don't think he should be in the same class as Crosby.

Could contain: Person, Text, Page, Face, Head

And... our very own Jeremy Colliton

Could contain: Page, Text, Person, File

I think Colliton may have gotten away with some trouble, even if it's definitely nowhere near the same level as Aldrich. Let's hope that he learns from this incident and tries to be a better person moving forward.

I blame the whole fiasco on the organization, once they found out they should have done more.

Vincent, Boynton, Sopel spoke about it and nothing got done.

Who is to say that if Toews, Kane or someone else said something things would have been different?

Just because Toews is a better player than those mentioned and was a captain means shit imo.

Bowman, McDonough, Wirtz and Q had all the power in that organization.

It was their job to take care of Aldridge situation.

As far as playing career goes, 2nd best hawks center behind Mikita.

I think he is done in the NHL but wouldn’t doubt that teams would sign him.

He will get into HOF eventually.

Everyone above deserves the blame. However, Toews went out of his way to defend the higher ups, including Bowman and all his 'precious' contributions to the city and the team.

Toews is what you call an apologist.

It's not really about he said as a 21-year old captain, probably way too young to deal with things like that.  It's him unwilling to accept responsibility years later, for himself and the personnel involved.  He complained about Bowman and MacIssac getting fired - literally the only one who did so.  Toews was so unprofessional the team actually had to hide him from the media and let Kane do the talking.

Make no mistake - I have zero respect for Toews.  He had time to prepare a statement and express remorse.  He used that time to try and play innocent while complaining about cancel culture.  **** him for never growing into a man who takes responsibility for his own actions.

This is pretty damning of a "statement" of Toews, which was really a snapshot of him right there. What he should've done was address what the organization did and didn't do with regards to Beach. But Toews was more than just a coward - he downplayed the incident so much that much of his words here were emphasized to defend Bowman - as if Bowman was the victim!

I don't really like cancel culture per se, but the critics of cancel culture often want to overlook questionable actions and behaviours so that they aren't subject to consequences.

Toews really tarnished his own career towards the end. I think Toews should be persona non grata in the HHOF, to be honest. He was a good player, but his off-ice (and possibly on-ice) behaviour, such as what he did above, should take him out of consideration.

I was expecting this to be a Toews slander thread. I'm glad it didn't turn into that. He's had an amazing career and was a treat to watch (when he wasn't playing us).

The beach thing doesn't look great for sure, however, I'll laugh in the face at any internet warrior on CDC that thinks they would have done something different as a 21 year old kid.

And that's all I have to say about that.

There's a lot of people at 21 years old that would've done something differently. This is just a stupid way of making an excuse for this.

We know the Canucks want to get bigger and more aggressive. That should benefit Woo. I don't see Bear, Meyers or Burroughs as long term. Wouldn't be surprised if they were all gone by next October. I want to see a longer look at Juulsen. McWard to Abby. Excited to see Johansson.

I hope they extend Burroughs. He is surprisingly physical. I'm not really into physical defenseman (nor am I against them), but he's been a very nice addition to an NHL lineup.

I'm sorry but I'm not seeing any of that, yet he still gets first line minutes. His shot isn't anywhere near where it was when he was a rookie or a sophomore. That was his bread and butter.

There is a bit more hustle from Brock. Before, he would give up on plays too easily and the puck would disappear from that offensive zone. It's not 100 percent better than before, but there is a noticeable jump.

I honestly believe Brock will light it up next year. I bet he knows exactly what he needs to work on this summer.

lol tavares left isles via free agency and left the team hanging with no compensation. horvat was dumped out of vancouver and actually gotten compensation back.. and yes he was dumped out because the management probably never had any intention of bringing horvat back to begin with thru the summer.. and then saw how he was doing in the first half of the season then thought ok maybe we should bring him back if we offer him what we shoulda offered in the summer. completely different scenario. of coz there's no negative chant about bo at the rogers arena itself. the people that go to the games are corporate suits that don't even care enough about the game.. i'm a season ticket holder.. and i can say our fans are relatively subdue and quiet compared to other teams.. and it has been like that for years... i don't recall a player that wanted to sign with the team and was traded and the fan base at least the ones on the forum continually wish him crash and burn or calling him trash non stop since the trade. literally everyday since the trade you'll find a post about him either sucking, useless, trash, greedy, overrated, soft, worse captain in the history etc etc.

That's actually not true at all. The Canucks lowballed Horvat quite badly. This was widely reported actually.

Demko was the top ranked goaltender in the draft. The other two aren’t core but like I said - Rathbone and Hoglander would have likely been drafts regardless of which GM we had since Brackett and Gradin were already with the team.

I honestly cannot understand how you love Benning so much. The team was awful, spent to the cap, we had one of the worst prospects groups in the league at the end of his tenure (he traded so many picks) and he handcuffed this management group with awful contracts. The OEL trade is likely going to be the worst trade in Canucks history - the Neely trade was bad because of how good it was for Boston but it isn’t like we got stuck with Pederson being our highest paid player for almost a decade in a cap era

Hughes fell to us and Pettersson wasn’t his guy. Like I said he gets full credit for Miller but other than that mostly filled the team with bad contracts and failed to properly develop any young talent in Utica

I don't love Benning. This has been a terribly false narrative attached to me, partially because people like you don't seem to account for my criticisms of Benning. The thing is, I noticed the good things that he did bring. But it's obvious that his trades AND pro scouting, among other things, have been severely lacking, to the point of handcuffing the team. I've already said in a previous post that if Benning had the kind of pro scouting that this current regime had, his tenure as a GM would've been extremely favourable. Alas, that isn't the case.

I've been extremely critical of Gillis as a drafter because of all the terrible draft picks from the 1st round to the 7th. People make all kinds of excuses for his draft. Benning had a much better draft record. It's one of the few bright spots of him being a GM. He had some people like Brackett to help him out. Yet after Brackett left, our American scouting took a bit of a dive.

This current regime has made a ton of mistakes, some of which were self-inflicted; however, there is no denying that their pro scouting is so much better than Gillis' and Benning's. Gillis had some really good players at favourable cap hits. However, he had his share of absolute duds - Garrison for starters. Also, Gillis' trade for Ballard was atrocious (Grabner + 1st round pick, and he was actually bought out by Gillis himself).

Meanwhile, as critical as I am about this regime, their trades and free signings have been a lot more reasonable for the most part. Bear was a good trade. Joshua is one of my favourite free agent signings, which I openly praise.

Each GM so far has has their flaws. So far, with recent transactions, Allvin has done a better job to fixing their own mistakes. They are still quite tight to the cap and their playoff projections were WELL OFF from what they had stated. However, we do have a bright future, largely because of our preexisting prospects, plus the new players that this regime brought in, like Kuzmenko.

You can’t say that. When you look at the position and the quality of picks there isn’t much difference. Drafting Kyle Beach or Henrik Samuelson or Tim Erixon wouldn’t have changed anything - they were bad drafts. Rackell would have been nice but we were all bummed that we didn’t draft David Musil.

in 2014 we would have drafted Dylan Larkin instead of Jake Virtanen. I will give credit to Benning for conceding on EP but with the same scouting team we would have drafted EP if Gillis or Nonis or Allvin were the GMs - it probably doesn’t matter.

At the end of the day Benning iced terrible teams, signed horrible players, got us in a bad cap situation and left the prospect pool completely empty. He gets credit for something he shouldn’t (heck our drafting wouldn’t have been any worse if @Alflives was the GM) and was one of the worst GMs in Canucks history.

Every hockey publication consistently ranked him near the bottom of the rankings.

I guess he should get some credit for not trading away Demko as well. Other than that he didn’t really sign or trade for or acquire picks that made an impact. Allvin has already done a lot more positive things in a short amount of time and the pieces he has added I think will bring us back to the playoffs next year

    Erm, what?

    Demko - 2nd round pick

    Hoglander - 2nd round pick

    Rathbone - 3rd round pick

    Doesn't matter?

  13. 1 hour ago, canucklehead44 said:

Benning really only deserves credit for JT Miller, OEL, Myers, Garland, Pearson, and Poolman . We can thank Detroit for Hughes, Linden/Delorme/Gradin for EP (a lot of controversy with Benning wanting Glass), and Brackett for Demko (also the top ranked goalie available in the 2nd round you take him).

Allvin has already made more positive moves in a year than Benning did over his tenure. Other than Miller I actually think the Kesler trade was his second best despite people saying it was terrible.

Benning's draft picks have been: Pettersson (a lot of the talk of him not choosing Pettersson has purely been speculation and not fact. At the end of the day, Pettersson was picked because of Delorme, among others, with Benning making that final call), Hughes, Podkolzin, Klimovich, etc etc. There's a lot of prospects that this current regime inherited because of Benning. The successful draft picks have been a major change from the previous regime (Gillis).

That being said, no question, the trading and free agent signings have been a disaster for the most part. There were oodles of potential wins with those trades (i.e. Nate Schmidt, Vey, Clendenning), but they never really took off.

Gillis would've been the worst GM to rebuild this team around, given his tremendous lack of draft pick successes. You just cannot build a team without growing your own players, and that's why we don't see him back in another GM job.

  14. I've given JR/Allvin a lot of criticism for how they had started this "rebuild" and they still have a lot more to prove so far; however, one of the most undeniably positive things they did do was pro scouting. These college signings, for example, have been a breath of fresh air. Still, we don't know how good these players will be, but these signings are definitely not hurting the team. They are cash-strapped right now (from their own doing), so I'm curious to see how these players will turn out.

I really appreciate having Kuzmenko and Joshua on this team. These two have been fantastic free agent signings by Allvin. Credit goes to them and their colleagues.

The drafting has to be another thing to watch out for. There's certain posters that compare this regime with Gillis, and my god, I sure hope it's not Gillis tier. The drafting under Gillis was beyond atrocious and indefensible. For all the playoff successes that he did have, preparing the team for the future was definitely a massive failure. This shouldn't even be a question, nor should there be excuses.

As I've said, I've been a critic about Allvin's management choices, but it seems like they are turning the corner. If Benning had been able to pro scout the way these guys have been doing, it very well might have saved Benning from making the mistakes he made through trades and free agent signings, year after year. Benning's pieces are still on the team and there should be no illusions that the recent successes of the team were because of Allvin. Benning was the first chapter, and Allvin is clearly the second one. Where this story goes, it'll be on Allvin and no one else.

Doesn't matter really, where he was drafted?

Its like saying Brayden Point wouldn't be worth two high picks, cause he was drafted in the 3rd round.
To PAs Canucks he is hopefully worth the two picks used... time will tell.

    It's actually called asset management.

I know that Yzerman is known for not losing trades however... I think that this one will go down as an L for him.

Hronek is such a good RHD and I dont think they'll get anyone close at 18th or 42nd overall.

I'm not even accounting for the Gretzky that we will draft in the 4th round ::D

He sold very high on Hronek. A former 2nd round draft pick that netted him two high picks from a lotto team.
