  1. Have to assume that was for other GMs, didn't work but now that they have freed up cap space, mgmt won't be held over a barrel during trade negotiations.
  2. Another poster made a good point, if they wait to buy him out next year it is next year's 7+M cap hit plus 6 more years of a cap penalty (I.E. only one less year of an OEL cap hit/penalty). Plus they would lose next season's significant cap benefit which reduces OEL's cap penalty to under a million. If they are going to buy him out, this is the best year to do it.
  3. Ya it's interesting, at least playing him next year would have confirmed if OEL was truly done. Ultimately, the grade on this move will come down to how they use the space. The extra space will relieve the pressure in trade talks with other teams...no longer at the cap ceiling so not as desperate as before. Other teams know that now.
  4. I really hope one of those two are still on the board at 11. If I was a GM (doesn't mean much), I would be picking centers in the first round 90% of the time...position that makes the biggest impact on the game and is easiest to predict at the prospect level. Always solid D and goalie options in the later rounds and wingers can be converted centers or more easily traded for or signed.
  5. On big consideration IMHO is that OV is 6'3" and a beast. MM is 5'10". A player can get away with a lot on defense when they are as big and powerful as OV...not sure MM will be able to make that same level impact unless his work rate significantly improves.
  6. Three options for OEL in my view, assuming he is not getting bought out: - 1LHD with Hughes playing the right side. Hughes makes everyone better so this might be the best way to maximize OEL's cap hit. - 2LHD with Hronek. This might be the most likely option so hopefully these two develop some chemistry. Hronek has some defensive chops so might allow OEL to play to his strengths on offense. - 3LHD either with Myers (as the most expensive bottom pairing) or with a strong defensive bottom pairing RHD so he can focus on offense. Ultimately, the team is missing one more solid D piece...if they get that and OEL fills the 1 or 2 LHD role then there might be some hope.
  7. Will be interesting - definitely high risk high reward pick...Huge offensive upside but signed with KHL and does not appear to be willing to play defense (which could change as he matures)
  8. Worried they are going to pick Axel Sandin-Pellikka...don't think this moves the Canucks closer to a Cup. Ideally it's Reinbacher (although he appears to be a pre #11 pick now) or Danielson IMHO
  9. The Canucks gain over 7M in cap space next year alone if they buy OEL out this summer so 6M in cap space over 8 years can't be right. Years 3 and 4 of the buyout hurt due to the 4.76M cap hit plus whatever the replacement player's salary is. Regardless, still a tough pill to swallow. IMHO team's best chance is to see if OEL can improve next year with a healthy summer (and no injury issues like last summer)
  10. Adding sweeteners this summer makes no sense in my opinion. What is mgmt going to spend the extra space on? More UFAs? Please no. Step 1) just sign EP long-term, that should be Mgmt's primary focus this summer. It is less about the players (new rotation every year) and more about setting a level of accountability on the ice. Give EP and QH the reigns and see what they can do. If they can't sign him and/or his level of commitment to the team isn't strong then some tough decisions will need to be made. Step 2) acquire extra picks at the draft if they can and skip July 1st. Hold out for some undervalued deals later in the summer. A lot of teams are capped out so likely some good value will be available after the UFA dust settles. Step 3) think outside the box, utilize the current players and see what the team can do. Trade all UFAs and spare parts at the TDL. Potential options, trade Bear at the draft, use Podz/Beau at 3C, try QH on the right side to get OEL going and maximize extra LHD, trade Myers/whoever doesn't fit at the TDL, etc. Kuz EP Mik DJ JT Boeser Podz/Beau Garland PDG Aman Hogs OEL QH BPA Hronek BPA Myers
  11. Podz is another player that do ld likely slot into the center role quite well
  12. I like his style and the way he plays but would be guessing if I tried to assess his NHL readiness personally. With that disclaimer out of the way a lot of the prospect analysts have rated him as one of the most "NHL ready" prospects in the draft. Likely ready for the AHL right away and NHL TBD
  13. Stick at 11 and select Nate Danielson...fills the big defensive center over the short-term and has a lot of potential offensive upside over the long-term
  14. Probably depends on his next contract - if he is open to a two or three year term at the same Cap Rate then maybe good value. If he is looking for $4.4M or more then might be best to trade at the draft or TDL. IMHO the Canucks should be patient this year and just work on improving internally this year - try and sign EP, work on building a strong one two punch in Demko/Silovs, work on work effort, and then trade excess pieces at the TDL. Every year they ship out bodies and bring new in, they have a horrible start and the rinse and repeat. Time to let the new leadership group set the tone, add and subtract pieces from there.
  15. Totally agree, whichever one doesn't require a sweetener and yields the best return.
  16. I agree, ride this year out. Try and sign EP and start planning for the long-term
  17. That world be great but I view OEL as immoveable given NMC and term/cap
  18. https://www.hockeyfeed.com/nhl-news/blackhawks-and-canucks-linked-in-monster-draft-day-trade Supposed potential draft day trade. Not sure why the Canucks would view Garland as a cap dump. If they are going to sweeten any trades to move cap it should be for Myers.
  19. Potential Panthers and Golden Knights final.......depressing. Canucks will officially never win in this NHL haha cry
  20. Signed in 2018 so that would have been KDs first offseason as GM. Wild that Lou was the GM of the Islanders (his first offseason in Long Island) - a team that went on to be much better without JT.
  21. Agreed they were on the way up and the JT signing stopped progress in its tracks. Huge rookie GM blunder.
  22. Probably not popular but absent some magic, mgmt should hold tight this year. Myers, Beau, Garland, etc. will get interest at the trade deadline so they should conserve assets rather than pay to move cap now. Hopefully they can extend EP and plan for the long-term. Kuz EP Beau Mik Miller Boeser Garland Dries Podz JD Aman Hogs QH Bear/xx Hirose/xx Hronek OEL Myers Demko
  23. Unless someone like Leonard slips, Nate Danielson is the pick in my view. Fits need, timeline of current roster and location in the draft at #11
