  1. I used to think that a next great war wouldn't happen at least not in my lifetime, but society can fall apart in the blink of an eye.
  2. "According to multiple sources, Demers invoked his limited no-trade clause to nix a trade between the Panthers and Canucks which would send the 29-year-old, right-shot defender the Canucks’ way." Pierre LeBrun on Demers: "He gave it a lot of thought, but he didn't feel it was the fit for him at this point." Doesn't matter that you doubt it.
  3. That's true. I thought you were doubting the whole thing. It makes sense though. Florida has their old GM back, the one the liked Gudbranson in the first place and I'm sure Benning doesn't want to lose him for nothing in free agency. At the trade deadline teams are looking to add players, so you won't be getting an NHLer back. This trade would have allowed Benning to still have a decent D man in return and signed long term.
  4. He was repeating what Pierre LeBrun said.
  5. In addition to the three unrestricted free agents the Canucks signed, they reportedly had a deal nixed for Florida Panthers defenceman Jason Demers. Reportedly, Demers killed the deal that would have sent him and that not-insignificant contract of his — four more years at $4.5 million a season — to Vancouver. The Panthers were apparently pretty eager to trade Demers and the talk is the Canucks were offering Erik Gudbranson. If that really was the deal, it would have been fascinating. Gudbranson is on an expiring contract and it’s possible the Canucks are already concerned that they may not be able to re-sign him. Demers is 29 years old, and if he was acquired more than a few people would have been suggesting the rebuild is already dead. http://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-among-most-active-teams-in-free-agency-but-are-they-better This couldn't possibly be true could it?
  6. Why is Fedor still fighting? Is he broke? He's what great fighters look like if they don't take steroids in their 30s. Silva, Henderson, Couture.. all juicers.
  7. None of us know what we're talking about as far as these prospects go. I hope he turns out to be a top line C because we already have more than enough soft 2nd/3rd line forwards. I'm not concerned about his size, the NHL is all about skill/speed now.
  8. Virtanen Prust Sutter Gudbranson Sbisa Dorsett This franchise used a lot of assets to bring in meat and potatoes players.
  9. True but if you're not talented enough to win, you should at least be able to be able to stand up for yourselves.
  10. I saw a documentary called The Collapse, where it was basically an interview with an ex-CIA agent. His whole thing is that peak oil has already happened and the next big war will happen over oil. I'd say the next big trigger for conflict could be refugees/migrants. As global warming makes places in the middle east, Africa and Central/South America less inhabitable, it will put tremendous stresses on Europe and USA.
  11. Based on him being ineffective defensively or injured most of the year?
  12. The people that didn't like Logan or John Wick. I rate them 2/10
  13. The gay vampire was the director? Whaaat?
  14. Wonder Woman 5.5/10 The first half of the movie is great and funny but it falls apart near the end. Worth watching if superhero movies are your thing. First the good. There are some really funny scenes thanks to a good supporting cast, and when Wonder Woman is trying to get accustomed to the modern world. Gal Gadot does a great job as Wonder Woman and is absolutely smoking hot. Some of the action is really good. Now the bad. While some of the action is good, the main fight is just a CGI mess. It's also inconsistent. Amazons can be killed by bullets and when individual people try to shoot Wonder Woman, they never miss but she simply blocks the bullets with her bracers.. however when multiple people are shooting at her their aim is worse than a storm troopers. While bullets seem to be able to hurt, explosions and giant objects landing on her have no effect. Another problem is the dialogue with the bad guys, especially the main villain. Wonder Woman - "I don't believe in that, I believe in love." Villain - "Then you must die."
  15. You have to get to the playoffs first. Saying that Virtanen & Gudbranson can be physical is putting lipstick on a pig, they both need to be more than just physical for that draft/trade to be a success. You can sign physical players that don't score or play good D in every offseason, you don't need to draft them 6th overall or give up what we gave up for Gudbranson. I hope Virtanen "gets it" sooner or later and that Gudbranson proves to be able to play top 4 well. This team needs a ton of improvement and Virtanen/Gudbranson are definitely big parts of what needs to go right.
  16. I actually said "Vancouver took Virtanen, if you scroll back to the start of this thread you'll see that most people that disagreed with the pick wanted Nylander or Ehlers." I exaggerated that most people didn't like the pick, but a lot didn't. The people that didn't like it mostly wanted Nylander or Ehlers, with some wanting Ritchie.
  17. A ton of fans were upset about it, and specifically wanted Nylader or Ehlers. Look back at what people were saying in these forums right after the pick. I didn't say nobody supported it. Speaking of people that did support it.... Warhippy I thought this was a Jake Virtanen thread. What did I avoid? That some other teams had bad picks too? Is there a point there? There's no revisionist history here by anyone other than yourself. Talking about Fleury and Dal Colle like they are relevant to this conversation. Vancouver took Virtanen, if you scroll back to the start of this thread you'll see that most people that disagreed with the pick wanted Nylander or Ehlers.
  18. Not really, unless you think Boeser > Nylander
  19. Quite the speech. It would actually make sense too if a ton of fans didn't instantly hate this pick and wish it was specifically Nylander or Ehlers instead. Just go back and look at the comments when he was drafted. This has nothing to do with hindsight, a ton of people didn't like a guy with no hockey IQ getting drafted 6th overall. It's not like they came to this conclusion recently.
  20. It doesn't matter if you build a team based on toughness or skill, both can win. Kings/Bruins - Tough (not to say they didn't have skill) Hawks/Pens - Skilled (not to say they didn't have toughness) Right now the Canucks don't have skill OR toughness so it can go either way how they build their team. It depends what prospects develop well, who they draft in upcoming years and what free agents sign here.
  21. If you're picking the top D in the draft and he's a top 4 not a top 2, I'd say it's an ok pick. Top 2 would be good pick.
  22. Craig Button on Team 1040 today: Juolevi accountable player, took responsibility for his play at tourney Leadership group went to Finn coaching staff to ask to play a less static game Good overall player, will have long career Won't overwhelm anyone with any one thing (not great shot, not great speed)
  23. Craig Button on Team 1040 today: + Jasek is a good passer + Goes to dirty areas, good battle level - Still needs to develop overall
  24. Yup. Exactly. Crosby, Kane, Toews, Doughty, Malkin. One day they'll MAYBE as good as Erikson. He's going to lead us to multiple cups.
