OMG Snow?

At least they are trying to be proactive this time around:

The following is an official announcement from the University:

The latest weather forecast is for rain and snow as early as mid-morning

tomorrow (Friday December 12), accompanied and followed by a blanket of

Arctic air and freezing temperatures atop Burnaby Mountain.

As classes have ended for the term, class cancellation will not be an issue.

However, should exams be disrupted, the University Registrar will advise

faculty and students of rescheduling plans. Typically, cancelled exams will

be rescheduled on the first day after the end of the exam schedule, which is

December 16.

At SFU we have been busy preparing for and anticipating severe weather. To

address recommendations received from faculty, staff and students, various

initiatives have been undertaken:

- We have revised the severe weather plan to implement a standby phase;

this will expedite the response once a decision to cancel classes is made.

- Gates have been installed at parking lots to manage a controlled release

of traffic and expedite a safer drive off campus. Staff at the gates will

indicate safe routes.

- Bus routes have been reviewed and options for re-routing buses have been

identified. The goal will be to keep public transit moving by avoiding the

problem routes.

- The web cam at the Gaglardi intersection is now accessible for public

viewing. (See below.)

- Emergency volunteers have been equipped with radios to access up-to-date

information. They will set up a reception in the ASSC1 Atrium and circulate

where students congregate to provide information on road conditions, food

services, first aid and if necessary, availability of overnight shelter.

- The Emergency Operation Centre will be activated upon class cancellation

to coordinate response activities and communication.

- The SFU.ca home page (http://www.sfu.ca) will be updated at least hourly

to provide status updates.

With your assistance and cooperation we are optimistic that these

initiatives can mitigate some of the frustration experienced during previous

storms. To assist:

- Register for SFU Alerts to receive class cancellation announcements. See

http://www.sfu.ca/sfualerts/

- If at all possible delay your commute until conditions improve.

- If you drive, your vehicle should be winterized.

- If you have not winterized your vehicle, you are encouraged to leave it

parked and take public transit or arrange a ride with a colleague.

- Check the web cams at http://www.ots.sfu.ca/ots/webcams/

- If you have an urgent need to leave, get to the parking lot as soon as

possible. Cars will be released in batches of 15, in rotation from each lot

and directed to the safest route. This is similar to systems utilized on

the Sea to Sky highway and the Coquihalla. It should be anticipated that

the commute off the hill may be delayed, but should be safer than what we

have experienced in the past.

- Check for updates at http://www.sfu.ca (bottom right, under ³Notices²)

and the Road Conditions site http://www.sfu.ca/security/sfuroadconditions/
