Bill Sikes
While it's true that the lower ranked players weren't as good then, it's also true that the higher ranked players aren't as much of a threat in this era. Borg went into most tournaments with the prospect of beating the likes of McEnroe, Connors, Nastase and Ashe for the championship. I don't believe that Federer or Sampras has had the same level of competition on a regular basis. OR is it more a case that they raised the bar so high only a few could reach it? Columbo
Well done Federer. If after last year's Wimbledon finals someone had told me that Federer, not Nadal, would win the French open, I wouldn't have believed them.
RUPERTKBD
OR is it more a case that they raised the bar so high only a few could reach it? A matter of opinion I suppose WJ, but I will say that in this era of "specialists", Nadal generally dominates the slower surfaces while Federer excels on the faster ones. There are exceptions, such as in the case of this year's French open and last year's Wimbledon, but it is a general trend for these two players. Borg won the French 6 times and Wimbledon 5 times. That's a very complete player in my book.
luineul
Federer is the best of all time right now but we'll see in a few years when Nadal starts winning more however, Nadal's knee worries me Aaand due to his bad knees, Nadal has pulled out of Wimbledon. Another golden opportunity for the King to make something happen. Go Federer!! Kendrick gave Murray a good run today, and Ivanovic just avoided elimination... Early round play is being aired on TSN at like, 4AM in the morning if anyone would like to know!

But look at Federer's results at the French, in the last 5 years his loses have been 4 to Nadal (3 in the final), the best clay courter around, and the year before that to Gustave Kuerten, a 3 time French Open Champion, it isn't like he can't play on clay, and Nadal has shown he can play on all surfaces as well, 2 straight Wimbledon Finals, a win at this years Aussie. The problem other players have is that to win a major, they usually have to beat BOTH of them, a very tall order.

My assertion would be that these two guys are perennial finalists because they are head and shoulders above the rest of the field. While beating Nadal and Federer is certainly a tall order, I don't see it as being more difficult than surviving a draw that includes Borg, McEnroe, Connors, Nastase, Ashe, Gerulaitis and the huge serve of Roscoe Tanner. hank4hire
i lik nadal How does he taste? and FYI, Nadal has bad knees and isn't participating in Wimbledon It's a great opportunity for Andy Murray to challenge for the title with Nadal out and a surface that plays well to his court coverage. I'm still cheering for Roger but I wouldn't mind seeing Murray win and challenge the men's elite; Roger and Rafael Edited June 24, 2009 by hank4hire

hank4hire
That and I also think the fame has affected her considerably. This was also the case with Serena Williams, injuries and losing focus. She was more concerned with clothing lines, endorsements, and public appearances but now she seems to be more determined to just play tennis and take advantage of her talent

luineul
Wow. J-W Tsonga got eliminated by Karlovic, and he will face Verdasco next round. Djokovic over Fish, and Sela, an unseeded Israeli player, gets through to the next round... Forgot who he beat. Some more-prominent player, no doubt. I for some reason jus tcan't htink of the name. Haas and Cilic are on TSN right now. The battle of old vs young!
g_bassi13
Soderling vs. Federer rematch upcoming. It'll be interesting to watch, but I can't give Soderling much of a chance against Federer here. Can't believe Hewitt knocked out Del Porto, that in straight sets too.
