Well, the Thrash finally had 17,000 for a game last night. And they won 7-1. Doubt it'll have any long term impact, but at least the team showed up when the fans did. Didn't hurt they were playing New Jersey and sole lead of the Northeast Division was on the line, something the Thrashers haven't had in 4 years.

But if they keep getting poor turnouts with this, probably the best team the Thrashers have EVER had, they could be in trouble sooner than later. I'd support Atlanta going to Quebec, not Winnipeg...do you want to see "Big Buff" for another 6 games a year again if Winnipeg is a division rival?

If you moved a team like Atlanta into Quebec right now, there would be a lot of buzz around them.

Atlanta is winning, and leading the Southeast division, and have been one of the biggest surprises this year. But a thing that goes against the NHL wanting ATL to relocate, is that they're doing good now, which may draw more and more fans in. Good to see that they drew 17,000 fans though.

This would also re-new the Quebec-Montreal rivalry.

I've always wondered... why not add two more teams and then the NHL will have an easier number to work with?

2 conferences with 4 divisions each, with the division leaders taking the top 4 slots and let the rest take the bottom 4 slots?

Talent wouldn't be an issue, since there are lots of players in the AHL, Europe and KHL who are there because there's no money for them in the NHL (cap reasons like Huet and Redden, or just no money for the middle-class players).

Of course, it would make the season longer... and that might just be the excuse for Bettman to have minimal inter-conference play... <_<

Here are a few fun facts about the Nords gathered a little bit everywhere.

1- Before the first season of the WHA, the San Francisco Sharks, because of financing problems, were sold to a Quebec group of businessmen for 215 000 $. The Nordiques were sold in 1995 for 75 millions. Not a bad investment.

2- Ron Tugnutt holds the modern record for the most saves in a regular season game. 70 saves in a 3-3 tie against Boston in March 1991. After the game, numerous Boston players congratulated him on his performance.

3- In his first NHL season in 1988, Joe Sakic was wearing #88, because #19 was taken by Alain Côté, who retired the next season. Nice stats for a first season: 23G 39A for 62PTS in 70 games. But a horrendous minus 39, the team's worst!

He also is the only player in NHL history to have recorded a 100 pt season despite his team finishing last in the standings (21 teams at that time). He did it twice!

4- Someone said it already, but worth mentioning again: Peter Stastny is 2nd scorer in the 80's, behind you know who.

5- Michel Bergeron, a coach, was traded to NY Rangers for a first round pick and 75 000$.

6- Back in 1972, Maurice "Rocket" Richard was the Nordiques' first coach. He resigned after two games (1-1), saying it was not for him.

Not the case anymore. Times have changed and players would rather play somewhere where theRe are fans in the stands.

Quote:

According to THN’s latest player poll, Quebec City is the clear choice as deserving of a franchise. Out of 90 players polled, 33 (or 36.7 percent) picked the capital of La Belle Province; Winnipeg was next with 18 votes (20 percent), followed by Las Vegas (12 votes/13.3 percent), Hamilton (11 votes/12.2 percent) and Seattle (five votes/5.6 percent).

Meaningless poll.

Players heading over to Quebec will look at some factors.

Pros: The excitement of being in a reborn franchise and the fan excitement that goes with it, a pretty city.

Cons: Those same fans can turn on you in a heartbeat, language issues, high taxes and a non-appealing climate.

In the end, it's corporate help that can get them a franchise. But will the players want to play there over southern states anonymity? Depends on the player, but I don't think so.

Valuable arguments, only time will tell (if it happens). One thing is sure: they will try to build a Québécois identity with the team, like Tampa is doing. Montreal failed to do that and lots of people are resentful and hoping the "new" Nordiques could fill that "hole".
