To be honest, I don't know that much about Declan Rice.  But U$133 million?  Good lord there's a lot of money floating around the English Premier League.  :o

I hope he's worth it.

And, apparently, Arsenal has also signed Kai Havertz from Chelsea, who I also don't know much about.  But that was only for U$82 million.

https://theathletic.com/4627559/2023/06/28/arsenal-transfer-news-havertz/

Rice is 24 and was an important player for West Ham.  They won the UEFA Conference League this year.  He is also an important player for England going forward.  Being and English player, there are registration benefits AKA the English tax.  If Rice was not from the UK, he would be a little bit cheaper, but not by much.  Man City put in an offer of £80m up front, plus £10m in add-ons, so their price wasn't much lower than the £100m up front, plus £5m in add-ons that Arsenal bid.

Havertz is 24 and is a German international.  He came from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea in 2020 for £62 million, which could rise to £71 million with add-ons.  He didn't light the Bridge up so his transfer is for about what Chelsea paid for him.  He is young and may fit better in Arsenal's system than he did at Chelsea.  He'll likely slot in the mid-field with Rice and Ødegaard.

So Havertz and Rice are replacements for Partey and Xhaka who are rumoured to be leaving?

It appears like that is the case.  Thing is, Havertz and Rice can also fill in different positions.  Kia could fill in up front.  Rice can fill in more defensive roles.  So there will be a little versatility in how they are used.  Which could be a good thing with Champions League this season.

And it's official.   Too bad, really.  I thought Xhaka was one of Arsenal's best players last season.

Granit Xhaka leaves Arsenal to join Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen have signed Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Arsenal on a five-year deal, the Bundesliga club said on Thursday.

Financial details were not disclosed but British media reported the German club paid €25 million euros ($27.2m) for the 30-year old.

A good signing.  Arsenal started to stagger as soon as he got injured last season.

Arsenal tie William Saliba to new big-money contract as familiar pattern followed

William Saliba's new Arsenal deal will not include a release clause, it has been claimed, with the Gunners finally ready to confirm an extension for the centre-back.

Saliba's existing deal at the Emirates Stadium was due to expire in 2024. His performances last season helped the London side challenge for the title, but nerves had started to jangle among some supporters amid interest from the continent.

Now, though, The Athletic reports that Saliba has extended his deal until 2027. As with new deals for the Frenchman's club colleagues, Arsenal aren't leaving themselves at risk of a rival being able to pay a release clause, though there is also no option to extend the contract for an extra year.

I think I even saw Jesus admit as much.
