News Release: Senators acquire a conditional sixth-round draft pick in 2013 from Dallas for Sergei Gonchar

Friday, 07.06.2013 / 5:32 PM / News

Sergei Goncharto the Dallas Stars in exchange for a conditional sixth-round draft pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

“We thank Sergei for his efforts in Ottawa,” said Senators general manager Bryan Murray. “We felt that this trade will give Sergei the opportunity to extend his career in the NHL and we wish him success with the Stars.

Gonchar, 39, played in 186 regular-season games with the Senators over three seasons, recording 15 goals, 76 assists and 101 penalty minutes.

The Senators currently have six selections in the 2013 entry draft, including their own first-, third-, fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-round selections. Ottawa also has the Philadelphia Flyers' fourth-round selection, acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier this season. The conditional pick from Dallas would give Ottawa seven selections in the 2013 draft.

@TSNBobMcKenzie: DAL acquires Sergei Gonchar from OTT for conditional 6th round pick. I would expect Gonchar to sign extension with Stars but has KHL offer.

I don't see why Gonchat would sign with Dallas. Unless he gets term that he wouldn't get elsewhere (ie KHL).

That said. If he's in it for $$ go K. If he wants to win, why go to Dallas?

Trades are allowed and can be done, but if you are the Bruins/Penguins/Kings/Blackhawks, then acquired player can't play in the playoffs.
