[Trade] Calgary and Colorado

Recommended Posts

First thought was that Colorado got the better deal.

Then I remembered how useless Tanguay was before he came to the Flames. There is good reason to believe he'll decline over the next few years at his age, while the much younger Jones should be able to improve. Similar situation with Sarich and O'Brien. Sarich is getting pretty old, while SOB may be salvageable.

But I think the main reason for this trade is to just shake things up in the room. These are two vets that are probably disillusioned with everything that happened over the last few seasons in Calgary. A fresh start for everyone involved is probably the true value here.

Seems like a good hockey trade that should benefit both teams.

Calgary was moving one player with a modified NTC and another with an NMC so they were going to be hard-pressed to find ideal returns. What they did manage was to address an organizational need (righthand shooting RW who can play in the top-six) and also get bigger and younger.

Colorado gets the better players on paper, based on past performance.

Jones is the wildcard. If he rebounds in Cowtown (and has healthy, productive seasons in the remaining years on his deal), then Calgary will very likely end up winning this trade in the longterm.

In most other scenarios, however, Colorado wins the trade.
