Street harassment: Video shows woman being *catcalled 100 times in 10 hours

Seen it before however,

"Donate to us to stop street harassment"

What a load of crap, just a scam to try and make some money.

The first thing that popped in my head when I saw the request to donate was that. What exactly are they doing with the money, funding more videos to tell me how bad men are? I agree some people are bad.

i need to make a video exposing something that is overblown by extremist feminists and ask for donations too. i need to send my daughter to university in about 17 years.

EXTREMIST FEMINIST? are you serious?

my friend recently moved to california to go to berkeley, and she was sexually harassed so much in the streets she actually had to move closer to campus just so she wouldn't feel like she's about to get raped every time she walks to the grocery store. she now pays $1100+ a month in rent FOR A SINGLE ROOM, just so she has some sense of security. and she's not at all an "extremist feminist with an agenda" -- she's a girl who likes to go for a walk sometimes.

let me guess, when a group of skeezy thugs say "hi mami" each time she walks by, she should just take it as a compliment because that time around they didn't happen to say "where u goin mami. nice ass mami" etc?

give me a break. there are huge class and cultural implications in this video. dunno why people are cherry picking which bits are offensive to them and which aren't.

It's a mixed bag. Some of the people did just say hello, but you can tell by their tone of voice and body language that they're still hitting on her. For example, the one guy said "have a nice evening" while turning his head and staring at her ass.

I personally don't see a problem with approaching/talking to someone who you find attractive. I know plenty of women would certainly be interested if the guy was attractive and pleasant. Obviously someone who looked like Brad Pitt would be considered much less creepy than some old guy (that's not to say women are shallow, that's just the way the world works). The point where it crosses the line into harassment, is where they know she's not interested and won't back off, or are too aggressive/threatening right off the bat.

Re: this not happening in Vancouver, it may not happen as much but I've heard stories from friends about some of the creeps they've encountered, so it does happen, especially those in customer service. It happens to men too, mostly by cougar types.

Define sexual harassment.

Define sexual harassment.

okay

Despite both national and international efforts to eliminate sexual harassment, there is no single definition of what constitutes prohibited behavior. Generally, international instruments define sexual harassment broadly as a form of violence against women and as discriminatory treatment, while national laws focus more closely on the illegal conduct. All definitions, however, are in agreement that the prohibited behavior is unwanted and causes harm to the victim. At the International level, the United Nations General Recommendation 19 to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women defines sexual harassment as including:

such unwelcome sexually determined behavior as physical contact and advances, sexually colored remarks, showing pornography and sexual demands, whether by words or actions. Such conduct can be humiliating and may constitute a health and safety problem; it is discriminatory when the woman has reasonable ground to believe that her objection would disadvantage her in connection with her employment, including recruitment or promotion, or when it creates a hostile working environment.

Honestly dude, I don't want to minimize the issue, it's obviously a problem in some areas, but we shouldn't generalize either gender because of what people do in certain geographic areas. Like I said in my OP, some dudes are creepy and should self castrate, but a smile and a hello are not harassment.

It's also not fair to apply our geographic experience on gender equality to the continent or world. I'm sure some women is Saudi Arabia would trade extreme misogyny for catcalls.

no, that is actual harassment. a lot of the head nods, smiles and simple "hi"s are not though. that's the overblown part. there is some legitimate harassment in that video though. there's also a lot of overblown stuff. her video would be more poignant and valid if she were to only include the real harassment, as there is more than enough to get the point across. including the other stuff just weakens the argument... but i guess you have to make sure you hit the number 100 in those 10 hours, because 57 just isn't as impactful?

Because it's intellectually dishonest?

of all the things to say about this video, saying "well, this guy and that guy weren't sexually explicit enough for the woman to feel sexually threatened" is about as "intellectually" dismissive (and f*cking stupid) as this forum can get

Yes or No. If I say smile and say hi to a girl as we pass with no sexual intent is it harassment.
