The top firms nowadays aren't just hiring the top statisticians and economists, they are hiring top behavioural psychologists, AI programmers, big data mining stuff, etc. They throw money around to try to gain even the slightest edge over competitors. I remember like 20 years back, one firm even specifically built a more direct fiber optic link to place orders or something, just so they can preemptively buy/sell whatever transactions that's happening to shave a few percentage points here and there for profit.
