Vancouver Team Awards 2018-19

- Cyclone Taylor – “Most Valuable Player”: Evgeni Malkin
- Walter (Babe) Pratt - “Best Defenceman”: T.J. Brodie
- Pavel Bure – “Most Exciting Player”: James Neal
- Fred J. Hume - “Unsung Hero “: Paul Martin
- Cyrus H. McLean – “Leading Scorer”: Evgeni Malkin

No explanations necessary, except for Martin. Before I traded Jason Demers for him, my team was well out of a playoff spot and my third paring rookie defenseman, Mikey Boyes, had 3 points in 23 games. Immediately after the trade, my team started to turn it around, and Boyes had 17 points in the last 35 games of the season.

EASTERN CONFERENCE PREDICTIONS

(1) New York Rangers (35-15-8) vs. (8) Toronto Maple Leafs (30-23-5)

As an extremely high scoring team, the New York Rangers have been the most dominant team in the Eastern Conference all year. With a stacked roster showcasing the likes of Vladimir Tarasenko, Logan Couture, and John Klingberg it’s not hard to see why they had the best goal differential in their conference (+25) and look to be the favourites in this year’s playoffs. Expect some brilliance from Sergei Bobrovsky and the 1st line of Saad - Couture - Tarasenko.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are 100% the underdogs in this the 2019 playoffs. The biggest struggle this year has most certainly been the porous goaltending. GM Spod had hoped the acquisition of Drew Doughty would cut down on some of the trouble on the back end, however the team still enters the playoffs with the most goals let in by any of the playoff teams this year at 174 GA. Toews and Doughty may be able to elevate their games, but unfortunately I don’t think it will be enough considering the goaltending situation.

Series Prediction - Rangers defeat the Leafs 4-1.

(2) Ottawa Senators (33-14-11) vs. (7) Boston Bruins (31-22-5)

The Ottawa Senators shocked a lot of people this year with how well they ended up doing. Looking at their lineup it’s safe to say that the first line of Sheen - Getzlaf - Wheeler has done most of the carrying on offense and Varlamov has stood on his head in net. Some people have questioned the depth of the team, however should the play of aforementioned players continue to be strong you can expect a solid series from the Senators.

After an interesting start to the season with Vezina winner Henrik Lundqvist being suspended due to salary reasons, and then being traded to a team low in the standings (Arizona) for mainly Nikita Scherbak, the Bruins were able to pick things up in the second half and make it into the playoffs. Some people have said the trade for Mitch Marner was the main spark that turned their team around (e5). As one of two teams in the playoffs with a negative goal differential, the Bruins D will have their work cut out for them against the big bodied Senators.

Series Prediction - Senators defeat the Bruins 4-2.

(3) Tampa Bay Lightning (28-20-10) vs. (6) Pittsburgh Penguins (31-21-6)

Playing in the worst division in the league, the Lightning were able to overtake the Washington Capitals in the last 5 games for the #3 seed. The trade to bring Marc-Andre Fleury in net seems to have been the push they needed. Led offensively mainly by Filip Forsberg and Jeff Carter we will see how this young team is able to respond to intense situations in the playoffs. Expect a high energy game from the Lightning and an intense will to win.

Pittsburgh is probably the most surprising team in the playoffs at the moment. After GM Dion Phaneuf was clearly a seller, getting rid of Kovalchuk/Weber/Bergeron, most people expected a tank to the bottom of the league. With one of the youngest D cores in the league (if not the youngest) and really no one on offense other than Bobby Ryan and Alex Khoklachev the Penguins went on a tear winning 10+ games straight. A lot of inexperience with this team will be the issue down the stretch.

Series Prediction: Expect a feisty series between these two teams, however the more experienced D from Tampa will be the difference. 4-3 Tampa Bay.

(4) Montreal Canadiens (35-18-6) vs. (5) New York Islanders (34-18-6)

As the best defensive team in the East, the Montreal Canadiens will be relying heavily on Cory Schneider and their defensive core of Rielly, Koltsov, and Kulikov to shut down the high scoring duo of Tyler Seguin/Ondrej Palat. This year, a trade that brought Claude Giroux to the team created a high scoring pair of their own in Giroux/Perry. In order for the Canadiens to win they will need a solid performance from Schneider, as well as some timely scoring from the bottom 6 (which unfortunately has been an issue all year).

The 2017-2018 Stanley Cup winning Islanders will look to repeat this year, as the second best defense in the Eastern Conference. Unlike the Canadiens their strength comes more from a strong defensive core involving Lindholm, Tanev, Samson, and Davard than it does from in net. As usual, Seguin and Palat will lead the charge on offense, however much like the Canadiens the Isles will need to see some scoring from the bottom 6 in key situations.

Series Prediction: This series will go the distance, however I believe the Isles experience from last year will give them the edge. 4-3 Islanders.

Detroit Red Wings

It was anticipated this would be a rough year for the Wings as the full rebuild was underway, and it was. Finishing 29th overall, the Wings had a few bright spots among many growing pains. With several big name UFA's this summer (Backes, Brassard, Zuccarello, Moulson) Detroit has some tough choices ahead. One bright spot is on the back end where 4 of the top 8 scorers on the Wings can be found. With offensive dman John Gligar in the system as well and the core of Detroit's defense locked up for several years, offense from the back end should continue to be a strength. Defense remains an issue...

MVP--PK Subban. He lead the team in scoring from the back end and continues to be the man on the Wings.

Unsung--Ivan Barbashev quietly had a solid sophomore campaign slotted as the 2C.

Rookie--Roger Olsson had a great year on the back end. With 27 points as a defensive defenseman, the Wings will look for big things from him moving forward. Sebastian Aho a close second with a solid rookie campaign.

Bust--Ty Rattie had a disappointing season as did David Pastrnak. The fourth line was also woeful.

Moving forward, the Wings are excited to be picking in the top 2 and look to add some skill to the lineup immediately.

Colorado Avalanche Awards:

MVP: Pekka Rinne

Pekka has been one of the main reasons for the Avs success ever since we acquired him 2 1/2 seasons ago. This year it was visibly apparent as the offence struggled to produce at a rate similar to other years. Another impressive number was the fact that we only let in 2.52 GAA, which puts us as the 3rd best team for that statistic in the West.

Honourable Mentions: Connor McDavid and Kevin Shattenkirk.

Best Defenseman: Shea Weber (8G/27A/35P)

This award is always a tough one to give out, however as the consistency has improved on the back end since his arrival we felt Shea was the best person to receive this award. Posting 13 points since the trade deadline, Shea's grit and tenacity is something that our team has lacked since this sim has started. We are looking forward to a deep playoff run this year with people like Shea on our roster.

Honourable Mentions: Kevin Shattenkirk and Madison Bowey

Unsung Hero: Cam Atkinson (14G/11A/25P)

Spending the entirety of the year on the 3rd line, Cam meshed extremely well with rookie Morgan Klimchuk and Casey Cizikas. Cam finished 3rd on the team in goals scored, and also was an important piece on our penalty kill. We're very thankful for his effort on our team and are happy to have him around for another couple years.

Honourable Mentions: Morgan Klimchuk and Dustin Roadhouse.

Most Exciting Player: Connor McDavid (35G/23/58P)

Our Captain Connor McDavid made this season a fun one for the fans. Scoring 15 more goals than the 2nd place person on the Avalanche (Joe Pavelski - 20 Goals) he was in the top 10 for goals in the NHL. As the only person to score at a PPG pace - a rarity for our team - Connor easily could've been the MVP for our team. Connor is a great leader and a team-first player, and we are happy to have him on our roster.

Honourable Mentions: Joe Pavelski and Kevin Shattenkirk.

Best Rookie: Dustin Roadhouse (5G/18A/23P)

Dustin exceeded expectations this year putting up 23 points as a DD rookie! The development shown in his game is a huge impact on this team, and we are happy to have him around for this year's playoffs.

Honourable Mention: Morgan Klimchuk

Minnesota vs Los Angeles

Players to keep an eye out for:

Minnesota: Jaromir Jagr

Possibly his last season, Jagr seeks to make his swan song a memorable one. His myriad of playoff appearances should prove valuable this post-season.

Los Angeles: Lamar Dudley

After being given the starting job, the Kings went 12-9-3. They had a huge hot streak nearing the end of the season, but ended the season with two consecutive losses. Can the young netminder keep his composure and prove he's ready for such a significant role?

Offence:

Both these teams have a very balanced top six. The 1-2 punch of Dillman and Kopitar down the middle has proven to be quite the pairing. The Wild have a stronger first line, but not as much scoring on the second line as the Kings. Thankfully, the Wild's third line has picked up a bit of slack for them.

Defence: Both squads have great dcores that have shown up offensively for them. Minnesota's group has put up a few more points, but LA's veterans may provide more poise.

Goaltending:

LA's goaltending may prove to be their Achilles' heel. Their young goaltender is a big question mark, compared to Holtby, a proven top 10 goalie in the league.

Verdict: Minnesota's depth will come out on top. Minnesota in 6 games

Anaheim vs Colorado

Players to keep an eye out for:

Anaheim: Leo Komarov

JE's team is boring and Leo is the only player with a cool flag.

Colorado: Gabriel Landeskog

The former 2nd overall pick had a... less than stellar year on the first line with Connor McJesus and Little Joe. He was looked to for goal scoring, which was a big issue for the Avs this season, but only potted 9 goals. Let's see if he can start clicking with the Messiah.

Forwards: Anaheim's centres don't put up the most points, but with MacKinnon, who cares? Good two-way presence to surround Johnny Hockey and Mack. There's no such thing as offence in Colorado (still love you, Tigs).

Defence: Great match-up between two awesome top pairings. GM Tigs traded away defensive defenceman legend Cam Fowler for A GOOD CANADIAN KID, Shea Weber. Colorado's brothas from anotha motha pairing has been producing nicely for them, too. I think Mark Giordano is a pretty cool guy. eh tears bicep and doesn't afraid of anything.

Goaltending: Subban is a young goalie, so who knows how he will perform (I can't find goalie stats and I don't follow other teams, so I'm just assuming). Rinne is Rinne. What else needs to be said?

Verdict: Anaheim takes the series in 5 games.

Winnipeg vs Edmonton

Players to keep an eye out for:

Winnipeg: Tom Wilson

Just the absolute worst.

Edmonton:

Matt Bartkowski

How the hell is he still in the NHL in a sim league?

Forwards: Winnipeg's top line is in elite territory, but their depth isn't anything to write home about. Edmonton has a fantastic centre duo in Stammer and Stepan, surrounded by solid wingers like Nash and Williams.

Defence: Pretty even match, but I think Edmonton just edges Winnipeg out here.

Goaltending: Here's where it gets interesting. Both teams don't really have a great starter, if they're even starters at all (again, I don't follow other teams, so I'm just guessing). The pairings of Van Laar/Markstrom and Lehner/Ramo might result in a high scoring series.

Verdict: Pretty evenly matched teams, but Edmonton takes it in 7.

Vancouver vs Dallas

Players to keep an eye out for:

Dallas: Evgeni Svechnikov

Seems like the only player in Dallas' Red Army that hasn't put up huge numbers. How will he compare to his comrades in this post-season?

Vancouver: tbh I don't know

Forwards: Clash of two of Russia's greatest offensive weapons: Ovi and Geno. Both teams are pretty strong offensively, but Vancouver's top line's strength gives them the slight edge.

Defence: Both have a decent top 4, but I think Vancouver's stolidity on the blueline will be the deciding factor.

Goaltending: Another even match-up (I think). No clear advantage here.

Verdict: Another very even series, but Vancouver wins in 7

I can finally do a team awards because my team wasn't complete ass this season!!

_____

Team MVP: Ilya Kovalchuk - 34G, 33A

Without a doubt, came in and is the reason we even had a chance at making the playoffs at all. He made everyone on the team better just by being in the lineup because it caused Radulov to slot down. Larkin, Michalek and Ristolainen all benefited greatly from this acquisition so with that being said this is a no brainer.

_____

Best Defenceman: Rasmus Ristolainen, 10G, 40A

This all while playing on the second-pairing still with Zadorov. Again, a pretty easy pick to make. Should probably give him top-line minutes but he plays his best alongside Zadorov for whatever reason. Has finally developed into a franchise defenseman after what was a down year for him last season.

_____

Most Improved: Dylan Larkin, 29G, 35A

This is a hard award to pick out because for the most part, everyone played similar to previous seasons, but Larkin went from being a 2C to establishing himself as a franchise centre and with that, I'd say it's valid to put him as the teams most improved player. I think he was the only overly successful player that is a DNG player-type too?

_____

Biggest Disappointment: Entire Bottom-6

Nothing at all from the bottom-6 forwards on my roster, which is frustrating considering our GFPG was fairly good to finish off the season. If we had more support we'd have made the playoffs and could've had one of the best GFPG in the league, but instead I had a non-existent group in the bottom half of my forward core all year.

_____

Looking to next season. We'll have a better Pilkvist, our #2 overall selection from last years draft, and a better Thatcher Demko. There is a possibility we incorporate some of our prospects into the lineup next season as well from the AHL this year. The only thing that will need to be addressed is the bottom-6 and filling it out with forwards who can even at least be semi-consistent.
