FLA OR DIE: LUONGONE

The Panthers have completed yet another trade, but this one will be a tough pill to swallow for fans. Prized fan favourite & club legend Bobby Lu has been sacrificed to the Kings in order to get rid of his anchor contract and past due date self, with Jonathan Quick coming back in exchange.

Luongo had a barely hanging above .900 sv% and 0 shutouts with the Panthers this season. Playing in front of a great defense, Roberto was one of the worst goalies in the league. His ill-fated contract had 6 years left at a cap hit of 4.533 million - “my contract sucks”, in the words of the man himself. Panthers fans will surely be devastated by the loss of Reilly Smith, but it may have been the only way out. On the bright side, the Panthers still have plenty of young wingers to hold the fort. Jonathan Huberdeau is currently the team's de facto number 1W, while there are no other wing prospects in the organizations bare cupboards.

The acquisition of Tyler Toffoli should not be understated either. Toffoli had 17 points in 30 games for the Kings, while playing in the very bad team. He is expected to start on the top line and 2nd unit powerplay, and compete for a spot in the top PP unit as the season progresses. If Toffoli manages to score 20-25 goals, the Panthers might even make the playoffs.

The Panthers haven’t really slipped with a 19-11-3 record, but with no pick for the next 3 drafts, reinforcing by quadrupling down in yet another trade shipping out even more picks just had to be done. Star players Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau will be hoping to lead the team into new territory: winning ways.

While it was a tough decision to move Noah Hanifin as he has potential to put up numbers, we feel like Haydn Fleury and/or Jake Bean are going to make Hanifin redundant in the near future. It could be a risky bet, but even if only one of Fleury or Bean become a top four defenseman, they will still fill Hanifin's #4 slot. With the defense core we have, we felt it was worth it to upgrade our top six for the future, and basically have it set for years to come (until another trade is made..).

This entire first season is being used as a developmental year. It's all about getting experience right now so we can push to compete very soon. Our roster is very young with many players on the verge of hitting their peaks at the same time...this was a key when we decided to move Hanifin - to acquire a forward who would have his prime years align with our current core. We have a few forwards in our minor league system that we would like to give some NHL minutes too as well.

With that being said, older veterans Chris Kunitz, and Bryan Bickell are available for a draft pick/prospect. We would like to move them out sooner rather than later, so we can recall some forwards to give them NHL minutes.
