Realistically - what assets could Vancouver expect in return in the Trade deadline

A fire sale trade of someone like Virtanen is not what the team needs.

They would not get anyone worthwhile in return.

The team need to look at finding and signing a decent F/A defenseman who was waived by another team.

And don't forget: Any new player from the States or Europe has to go through a 14 day quarantine.

Out of all the pending UFA’s we’ve had during the trade deadline we’ve sold like 3 for futures over the last 20 years. I seriously can’t even recall us ever unloading contracts at the deadline. History always repeats itself, therefore, we won’t sell anything.

Might be a bit of hyperbole, but feels about right. If you really want to be inspired, contrast the assets we've given up for rentals over that time versus the free agents we've let walk. It's really uplifting.

Now that the season is pretty well over, I'd say it's best to not renew any of the players with expiring contracts (Sutter, Edler, Benn, Pearson, and let Spooner and Baertschi fall off the books and there's $20M freed up.  Buy out L.E. and there's another 6M.  Of course some of that has to go to EP40 and Q.H. but that should leave some good $'s available to hopefully pick up a good player or two.  For those players above, if they can get anything for them in a trade - that's a bonus, but they're all pretty well washed up or at the end of their time, so don't expect much.
