Tampa Bay Lightning End Of Season Press Conference

Dave Randorf: How would you evaluate this past season finishing 21st in the league and 500pts back from a wildcard spot

Relyt Krets: Yeah, I think this season went well. We had many learning curves thrown our way with many younger players in our lineup nightly. We started the season strong, a lot stronger then we thought we would have being led by some verteran players such as Jordan Eberle, Yanni Gourde and Jeff Skinner, but of course we moved on from them and gave some of our younger players more looks in certain situations and fell a bit in the standings. This is the first real season of the start of our rebuild. I'm not scared to mention the "R" word as that was the plan that we would take a step back, and rebuild here over the next few seasons. So we are happy with the team, the effort our players put forward every night and we feel we have a very promising young team to build on heading into this off-season and into next year

DR: You mentioned the word rebuild, and that has been used a few times this season. Where would you say your team is at in the process and do you have a timeline in mind?

RK: We feel this would be considered year 1 of 3. We feel next year we are going to see more of our prosects battle for spots, and likely not to be a big player in free agency when it opens to maintain those spots for those player. With our prospect cupboards full and 14 picks over the next 2 seasons, along with 2 firsts this season, we feel that this process could move along at a faster pace then most rebuilds. We have some weak areas that we need to build, but we are confident in our scouting team to fill the grey areas

DR: Can you touch on your offseason plans? Currently you have 1 pending UFA in Tyler Johnson, and 12 Pending RFA's.

RK: We have had the hard discussion with Tyler and he will not be returning next season. We are going to allow him to explore free agency and we feel he will fit better with a contender given his Stanley Cup rings. As for our RFA's, we have not entered into talks as of yet with any, however of the 12, we are likley looking at only about half that to be qualified, but those decisions have yet to be set in stone, and we have som decisions to make going forward. As for the off-season, it will be one step at a time. We look forward to May 8th and the draft lottery to see if we are able to move up, or if we stay put at 12th. Either way we are going to get a great player and have a chance at a 2nd great player later in the 1st. We will likely look to move on from some other players and grab more picks if we are able, but that is always easier said then done. We have a projected near $16M in cap heading into the off season, so we will try to be players where we can but we will also try to weaponize the cap space as well.

DR: Thanks Relyt and look forward to what you have in store for the Lightning this off season

RK: Thanks Dave

This is the worst case of starting goalie manipulation since... ...well, me dressing Vasilevskiy & Kuemper last year.

To be fair, I acquired Georgiev in the off-season when he was expected to split the crease. I don't think anyone was confident he was going to be the main starter.

I tried exploring the market when he started getting more starts, no market. I tried again when Nail messaged me that one of them might be requesting a trade soon given how they're both starters, but again there were no takers/no market. I realize I'll need to move one of them this off-season but mid-season goalie trades are almost impossible in this league.

Haha...I would have traded for one! ;)

I'm just jealous, that's all.
