I recall some gawd awful teams in the 70's and 80's but don't recall there being as much negativity in the fan base. We were just happy to have an NHL team.

Of course there was negativity.  FFS the team was dead last in the NHL in attendance twice in the 80's and 2nd last two other times.  Not going to games that were sold out the first several years is the most potent form of negativity.

You don't think that any other teams had really bad attendance at times over the years? In 1981-82 Van, 12,858; Three original six teams... same year: CHI, 12 698, DET, 12,496; BOST, 12,024 , all had worse attendance records than Vancouver.  This has happened to most teams over time. The big difference, IMO, is the incredibly negative press here in BC and the ridiculous and nasty vitriol spewed out over the internet both here and out East.

Apart from the local broadcast team, have you ever noticed how Sportsnet articles and media tend to rip on the Canucks every chance they get? And also the Ottawa Senators? All of the Canadian teams get much more positive attention.
The reason why this is may surprise you. It actually has to do with sponsorship. The Canucks and Sens are the only two Canadian teams that are not affiliated with Scotiabank (as we’re all too aware after seeing those unsightly TD ads on the black skate jersey).
So what does that have to do with anything? Scotiabank has massive influence on the media and promotion end of things. They are involved in all of it. Scotiabank hockey day in Canada. They help decide all kinds of NHL related things. Scotiabank is a sponsor of programming on Sportsnet, including Wednesday Night Hockey, Hockey Day in Canada and Hometown Hockey. And they care nothing about the Canucks and Sens to the point where they belittle the organizations every chance they get through their influence on Sportsnet.

Follow the money. How did the Canucks get such an unfair opening for the schedule this season, putting them on a disastrous road trip? Hmm, television companies shouldn’t have influence on that kind of thing, do they? Is it just coincidence the Leafs are at home every Saturday for hockey night in Canada?

One big bank is largely to blame. Sportsnet is just the puppet.

Your kidding right?

For 7 years under Benning media ignored the team but did ridicule fans as being unreasonable.

What have the Canucks done to get anything other than what has been reported lately?

Where is the "joy, joy" stuff to talk about? "Hey Vancouver is still at he bottom of the league but look at how good Quinn and Pettersson are!". Well that lasted for 4 years.

The unfair schedule? Not much worse than past years but at least this year the reason could be there was no time to influence the NHL like Gillis did.

Follow the money eh?

Let's see, the team plays in Rogers arena as do three other teams, Rogers media owns the broadcast right and have a big decision on who plays when so they can get ratings to sell advertising. Scotia bank has only two arena deals Toronto and Calgary.

ALL schedules for teams on the wrong coast have tough schedules the worst the Canucks ever had apart from Covid time was the 2013/14 season, worse that year almost no practice time for 4 months.

But this year was bad but now the remainder is easy.

A lot is hurting the game. Albatross contracts are freezing teams to obsolete players. Two ref system is flawed, no accountability. Who knows what Bettman's plans are, he seems to operate on his own. Chicago got away with murder, it's like there is favoritism to some teams.

Change Bettman and get a fresh start.
