  1. Good trade. Shaller was dead weight (should fit right in on that LA team, fortunately for him), and there wasn't going to be room for Madden; we're too deep at C and as great a season he's having in college, whether he will be able to keep up with in the NHL is still a big question. We clearly need that top 6 help right now. Of course you can't take it to the bank that we'll be able to re-sign Toffoli, but it's not out of the question and worth the "gamble," if you want to call it that. GMJB alludes to the fact that he has a plan to recoup that 1st form the Miller trade — My bet is that he already knows who/what he will be willing to move when the time is right to do that (don't expect it before the deadline, but more likely in the off-season leading up to the draft) and he is confident that he can get that return. After the way the team has come together and performed under his watch (especially over the last year), I have faith in his plans. In the end, I think he'll be an ideal fit with Bo and Pearson; that line won't be getting pushed around and should be able to provide a little bit of everything.
  2. I do remember that; Management at the place I was at was pretty worried about the added competition of BCLs being open extended hours/Sunday and our prices going up. Not sure how it turned out on the books but I'm sure they're still making a killing.
  3. May as well be. LDB is awful. They know nothing will stop people from boozin' and know they can get away with crazy prices because it won't slow business one bit. In fact, the more they raise that "wholesale" price, I bet you the more business BCLs would get. Private store prices go up as result -> people take their business to the less expensive BCL. Few will cut their drinking while they have that option. No way!
  4. Those last couple years are insane. No way the league lets that happen.
  5. Doubt there'll be recapture if it's due to an injury; LTIR forever and ever and ever. That or the league will waive it because that's just how the league operates.
  6. Agreed, 100%. Our country needs to pour way more effort into education.
  7. Yup, I still feel I've fared better than a good chunk of people my age (many of my friends still have virtually no direction). The education system definitely doesn't help; the highschool I went to really only helped those who already knew what they wanted to do (basically, the kids already cleaning house on scholarships and extra funding — which is fair enough in itself, but the school was very "top heavy" academically because of it). I think they did a university/college info fair type thing one year, but that was it. Yeah, there's plenty of ways in which I can branch out once I sort of get my foot in the door. Structural, mechanical, electrical, or general product design... These jobs are everywhere.
  8. I feel you man. I'm balancing a full time job in Burnaby while attending BCIT at night, usually only one or two nights a week because of time constraints. Incredibly inefficient, but at least once I get my certificate I can get a good enough job to alleviate some of the financial pressure, and ideally work toward a degree later (not in BC — Hightailing it to Ontario later in the year). But it's painful as hell trying to do this as a 28 year old under the circumstances aGent mentions below. The anxiety of trying to pick something ala your first line is real. I'm getting into building design and architectural drafting because, well, it isn't like people are going to stop building stuff. Luckily I enjoy it and have always been at least peripherally interested in architecture and engineering; however, I suck at drawing (smudges, smudges everywhere!) so the manual drafting courses suck and take forever. But it's a career I can continue building on in a pretty clear line and have an adaptable plan. Maybe by the time I'm 40 I'll manage to be an engineer.
  9. Never thought I'd care so little about seeing such an iconic band that I've never seen in concert. Doesn't interest me even the slightest.
  10. He was so calm through that whole play. He gets knocked on for his hockey IQ all the time, but I think it's improved and that was an example. He found a hole and made it work, and did it with composure. That's one of the biggest differences in his game now, he's been in the league long enough that he doesn't panic so much on the ice anymore and it's he's creating more opportunities for himself and his linemates. It's fantastic.
  11. Do people do anything for reasons other than money anymore? Do people have dreams of what/who they wanna be for the sake of being that thing, or does everyone just wanna rich? There's only so much "wealth" to go around.
  12. I lived like five blocks away from this when it happened, on W 70th Ave.
  13. This is a weird thread indeed. People care about this story far too much.
  14. I work the mailroom at a Telus building in Burnaby. Canada Post called us this morning to let us know they shut down for the day (FedEx did the same). It's brutal out there for couriers.
  15. Snowing like crazy here at Kingsway and Boundary. Buddy in our parking lot has been plowing all morning and it's already built up another two inches or so.
  16. Exactly. If it works, it works, and I hope this continues. He's kept quiet through the scratches, and if this gets him back to contributing in a more meaningful way, then everyone should be all for it.
  17. Even Cowgirls Get the Blues — Tom Robbins
  18. Huh, I have one if his dad's old Jets jerseys. That said, that was a dumb hit to try to make in today's NHL.
