Mock Draft Pre-Lottery

(Brought to you by Chimon and Niloc)

1. Florida Panthers – LW Nail Yakupov

It doesn’t get any easier than this. With Florida boasting an incredible amount of depth at the centre position (Huberdeau, Shore, McFarland, Grimmaldi), the Panthers will add to their deep prospect pool a future superstar in Nail Yakupov, who could see NHL ice as soon as next season.

2. Phoenix Coyotes – C Mikhail Grigorenko

Mikhail Grigorenko will solidify the Coyotes at centre alongside youngsters in Cal O’Reilly and Kyle Turris, giving the desert dogs a formidable 1-2-3 punch down the middle.

3. Ottawa Senators – LW Filip Forsberg

The Ottawa Senators took centre Mika Zibanejad in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and defenceman Erik Karlsson in ’08 (now with the Nashville Predators). Clearly the Senators aren’t shy with picking Swedes and they will get a great one this year in Filip Forsberg, who was Zibanejad’s teammate when they won gold together at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Alberta almost 3 months ago.

4. Calgary Flames – D Ryan Murray

Jay Boumeester and Mark Giordano aren’t getting any younger, while PK Subban and TJ Brodie are the best of Calgary’s future on defence. Ryan Murray will be a big piece of the Flames’ puzzle as they undergo their long-awaited rebuild.

5. Detroit Red Wings – C Alex Galchenyuk

The Red Wings have currently have an embarrassment of prospect riches at nearly every position due to off-loading their superstars Zetterberg and Datsyuk at the deadline. Detroit prides itself on playing a strong two-way game, and with their depth at the centre position, can afford to take a gamble by selecting Alex Galchenyuk , who has missed the entire OHL season so far with a knee injury.

6. Montreal Canadiens – D Matt Dumba

The Montreal Canadiens traded the energizing PK Subban to the Calgary Flames this season, but get a Subban-like player back at the draft by selecting another high-risk, high-reward defenceman in Matt Dumba. It will be a shocker if Dumba falls any farther than this spot.

7. Toronto Maple Leafs (from San Jose Sharks) – C Zemgus Girgensons

Life for the Toronto Maple Leafs (and their fans) have not gotten any easier after losing their long-time favorite Mats Sundin first to free agency, and then retirement. The Leaf’s search for a big-bodied centre finally comes to an end this year as they select two-way centre Zemgus Girgensons, who brings competitiveness and leadership in boatloads every time he’s on the ice.

8. Toronto Maple Leafs – D Jacob Trouba

Big, mobile, and American. The Leafs are never afraid to draft a player south of the border and they’ll get a fantastic two-way defenceman in Jacob Trouba, who can both lay the body on opponents or quarterback a power-play with ease.

9. Calgary Flames (from Dallas Stars) – RW Sebastian Collberg

You have to imagine the Calgary Flames would be hopping mad after Ottawa takes (potentially) the best Swede in Filip Forsberg a few picks earlier. The Flames will select their very own Tre Kronor player in Sebastian Collberg, who dazzled scouts on the international stage (2012 WJC & 5-Nations Tournament) with great wheels, slick shootout goals and a lethal NHL-level shot.

10. New Jersey Devils – LW Pontus Aberg

New Jersey has a fairly veteran group of left-wingers at the pro level (Elias, Cleary, Zubrus) and not much in terms future prospects on the same side. The Devils can jumpstart their offense with perhaps the best pure goal-scorer in this year’s draft in the dynamic Pontus Aberg, who has already made an impact for Djugardens this season while playing against men.

11. Montreal Canadiens (from Carolina Hurricanes) – RW Morgan Rielly

The Montreal Canadiens continue to add to their defence by selecting the best offensive defenceman available at the draft, Morgan Rielly. There will naturally be some concerns about Rielly’s mobility as he has undergone ACL surgery earlier this year, but the blueliner’s creativity, vision, and offensive instincts especially on the powerplay will far outweigh the risks for the Les Habitants.

12. Detroit Red Wings (from Boston Bruins) – RW Teuvo Teravainen

Detroit adds to their shortage of high-end right wingers by selecting Teuvo Teravainen, who makes the biggest jump in the draft as he is ranked late in the first round by most scouting services. Hockey sense is something that can not be taught and the Red Wings believe Teravainen would be taken first overall if the draft was ranked by that attribute. Expect the Winged Wheels to allow the Finn to continue developing overseas as he must bulk up and improve his conditioning before coming over to North America.

13. Vancouver Canucks (from Minnesota Wild) – D Griffin Reinhart

We may never know if the Vancouver Canucks will ever satisfy its multitude of fans and armchair GMs by signing/offer-sheeting/trading for/kidnapping Shea Weber or Ryan Suter, but they can draft the virtual Weber-clone in Griffin Reinhart at the 13th spot this year. The 6’4”, 210 lbs defenceman will be a rock for the Canucks defence core for years to come, and don’t be surprised if he finds himself playing with Dan Hamhuis one day. Mason Raymond, Keith Ballard, the 1st round pick, and Cody H- Oh wait…can take a deep breath…for now.

14. Ottawa Senators (from Nashville Predators) – C Brendan Gaunce

The Ottawa Senators rectify their lack of depth down the middle by drafting a big 2-way centre in Brendan Gaunce, who by this stage of the draft can be considered a steal. A forward with leadership and playmaking abilities oozing from his veins, it won’t take long for Senators fans to ask, “Spezza who?”

15. Edmonton Oilers – D Cody Ceci

The Edmonton Oilers come to the draft board and this time it’s…not a first overall pick?! Oilers fans and brass will still be pleased as they can still draft Cody Ceci from the Ottawa 67’s, who has stunned the scouting world this season by scoring at a point-per-game clip as a defenceman. While Ceci’s scoring capability at the NHL level remains to be seen, he still brings terrific two-way prowess, puck-moving abilities, and the ever-important composure with the puck.

16. Anaheim Ducks – D Olli Maata

Ducks fans won’t feel the loss of Cam Fowler all that much when Anaheim drafts a rock-steady two-way defenceman in Olli Maata. The Finnish defenceman is an excellent puck-mover who is also smart, competitive, and a great leader on and off the ice. He will be great asset to a Ducks organization who has a relatively veteran defence core (Beauchemin, Visnovsky, Foster, Brookbank).

17. New York Islanders – C Radek Faksa

Basically the best player available, the Islanders will be besides themselves as they select the versatile Czech power forward in Radek Faksa, who has been making all the draft headlines with his great season in Kitchener. Faksa boasts terrific size, work ethic, hockey sense, and a great shot to boot, and it is quite fittting that the Islander’s have fellow Czech mates in Prospal and Plekanec (to whom Faksa has been favorably compared to) to mentor the young centre.

18. New York Rangers – C Tomas Hertl

First there was Jaromir Jagr, now Tomas Hertl…Okay, so maybe it’s a little premature to put Hertl in the same breadth as the all-time Czech great (never mind Jagr playing a different position), but the similarities are there as Hertl possesses good hockey sense and enviable puck-handling and puck protection abilities. The only difference is that Hertl is primarily a creative playmaker, though don’t be surprised if you see him drive to the net ala vintage Jagr.

19. Winnepeg Jets – D Slater Koekkoek

The Winnipeg Jets have a pretty modest prospect pool on defence (Postma the most prominent). This will change when they select a solid, character defenceman in Slater Koekkoek. While he isn’t projected to be a big point-producer at the NHL level, every team needs a solid shut-down defenceman and Koekkoek brings it in spades. Opponents visiting the MTS Arena will think twice before taking liberties against the Jets skilled players in JVR, Burmistrov, and Kane as Koekkoek has the size and grit to play bodyguard for them.

20. Edmonton Oilers (from St. Louis Blues) – D Derrick Pouliot

The Edmonton Oilers complement their earlier selection of 2-way defenceman Cody Ceci with puck-moving offensive defenceman Derrick Pouliot. This could essentially be a match made in heaven as Pouliot is a great skater with terrific vision, offensive awareness, and puckhandling ability, a deadly combination when you unite that with high-flying youngsters in Hall, Eberle, and Paajarvi.

21. Colorado Avalanche – RW Thomas Wilson

Colorado selects the rugged Thomas Wilson as their prospect depth on right-wing is feeble to say the least. They already have skill in Hejduk, Michalek, and Mueller, so Wilson will fit right in as a competitive, hard-working player who is not afraid to throw his weight around and stand up for his teammates. Wilson may not put up points as proficiently as other players in the draft, but his physical presence and energetic style of play will be greatly appreciated in the Mile-High City.

22. Buffalo Sabres – LW Stefan Matteau

The Sabres have a pretty weak prospect pool on left-wing, and this will be solved by drafting the physical power forward Stefan Matteau. Stefan has the size, skill, and bloodlines to wreak havoc on opponents, and gives the smaller Sabres like Gerbe and Ennis a little more room on the ice with his presence. We’re not saying he’s going to be the next Lucic, but with Stefan Matteau and Zack Kassian on the Buffalo squad in the near future, do opposing teams really want to mess with Ryan Miller now?

23. Columbus Blue Jackets (from Dallas Stars) – Ville Pokka

The Columbus Blue Jackets add youth to their defence by drafting the steady two-way defenceman Ville Pokka. Pokka won’t be the most exciting player out on the ice on most nights, but the Finnish defenceman plays a very consistent game that is rivaled by few players. On top of that, Pokka isn’t hesitant to throw a hit here and there and plays with ice in his veins, which makes the Finn all the more valuable this late in the draft.

24. Detroit Red Wings (from Vancouver Canucks) – RW Martin Frk

Another jump up for Detroit’s draft pick, Martin Frk will quickly find a role in the Red Wing’s organization as he is the type of player the Wing’s sorely lack after trading away Johan Franzen and Todd Bertuzzi. Frk plays a protypical power forward game and boasts slick hands to boot, making him all the more dangerous as he continues his development. The Red Wings must make sure that the Czech forward also stays disciplined and play at a more consistent level when he makes the jump to the pro level.

25. Columbus Blue Jackets – G Malcolm Subban

Steve Mason has been terrific for Columbus this year, but he can’t play 82 games by himself. The Jackets lack a high-end goaltending prospect in the wings and Malcolm Subban would be a terrific addition to the team. In time, Mason and Subban could become one of the best 1A and 1B goalie tandems in the league. The organization’s experience with Russian draft picks would strongly influence their decision to take Subban over Vasilevski, but one team’s fear is another’s delight…

26. Washington Capitals – G Andrei Vasilevski

The Washington Capitals are no strangers to drafting Russians, and they’ll a hell of one in netminder Andrei Vasilevski. Having dealt former Russian resident Varlamov to the Colorado last season for draft picks, the Capitals, like Columbus, lack a high-end goalie talent to play behind for Vokoun. Andrei Vasilevski solves this dilemma in spades, though the Caps may want to receive assurance from Vasilevski that he will come over to North America. The fact that Washington has (or has had) numerous Russians on their current roster (Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Orlov) will play a role in Vasilevski’s decision.

27. Ottawa Senators (from Chicago Blackhawks) – D Brady Skjei

The Ottawa Senators have taken Filip Forsberg and Brendan Gaunce to boost their offense, so they will look to improve their backend by drafting Brady Skjei, an imposing but smooth-skating defenceman who has all-around talent. He could very well be Jonas Brodin’s defence partner in the future as both are very mobile two-way defenders.

28. Edmonton Oilers (from Pittsburgh Penguins) – LW Tanner Pearson

The Oilers bolstered their defence with two-way defenceman Cody Ceci and the offensive-minded Derrick Pouliot, so they will not hesitate to add a bit of skill with Tanner Pearson. This late bloomer is one of the more NHL-ready prospects in the draft and will fit in seamlessly with the high-flying Oilers perhaps as soon as next season. Pearson wowed the audience with his terrific puck control, shot, and hockey sense while playing for Team Canada at the 2012 World Juniors in Edmonton during Christmas, and will feel right at home.

29. Philadelphia Flyers – D Matt Finn

The Philadelphia Flyers have a pretty veteran defence core in Pronger, Timmonen, and Sopel, so it’s about time that the Broad Street Bullies draft the best available, all-around gritty defenceman in Matt Finn. With Pronger and Timmonen’s best days behind them, Finn will one day be the leader from the blue line for the Flyers, as he possesses immense leadership qualities and hockey IQ.

30. Toronto Maple Leafs (from Los Angeles Kings) – LW Phillip Di Guiseppe

The Toronto Maple Leafs select the best player available with the last pick of the first round. They have already taken Girgensons and Trouba, who fill their grit and toughness quotient, so picking the quick-skating, competitive Di Guiseppe would complement their roster nicely. Di Guiseppe has good size, good offensive instincts, and slick hands that should be put to good use in a Leafs jersey.
