What's his MO? Flaws?

Similar to Cory Sarich. Big, slow, plays physical, can handle 10-15 minutes/game reliably, you're in trouble if he's in your top 4 but okay if he's #6-#8 dman.

Other possibilities:
  • Brett Clark
  • Chris Campoli
  • Paul Ranger
  • Colin White
  • Mike Mottau
  • Mark Eaton
  • <Where I'd put Jim Vandermeer on my list>
  • Matt Gilroy
  • Kent Huskins
  • Randy Jones
  • Cam Barker
  • Nick Boynton

Vandermeer > Alberts

Alberts can lay the odd heavy hit, but he has zero edge, can't fight for sh*t, and is inconsistent with his hits. I'm always rooting for the guy, but Vandermeer is an obvious upgrade over him.

PTO at the very LEAST. I say bring him in as our 7th defenseman on a 1 year. That's assuming we don't get any D back in a Lou trade or whatever ends up happening with that ridiculous situation.

Stay away from him he would not help us in the playoffs.. Guy is to slow and a pylon he's the type of defenseman that could cause that brutal turnover or take a dumb penalty. Also during the charity game The thunder birds made him look like a snail to slow for the game I'm sure there is better options out there for toughness.

We need a big, physical shutdown stay at home defenceman, especially for our bottom-half and that is what Vandermeer is. He's also capable of playing 20+ minutes in case we have an injury to our top-4, something Ballard and Tanev weren't capable of during the last two post season runs.

Edler - Garrison
Hamhuis - Bieksa
Ballard - Vandermeer
Tanev
Alberts

We desperately need defensive depth, especially seeing as Alberts' size is rarely being used, and I've been saying that guys like Vandermeer or Jurcina would fill that role perfectly.

Who? I can't think of too many others that would fill this roll any better than Vandermeer. But I haven't really looked too far into it to be honest. Hockey has kind of taken a back burner since this lockout bullish*t started dragging on.

Trade route when we deal luongo I'm sure the Canucks can find a depth defenseman of a Aaron Rome type.

No he's not. Yes we could use defensive depth, and I wouldn't mind Vandermeer (although I'd like to do better), we are in serious trouble if he has to play in the top-four for any period of time. Vandermeer, Jurcina and others of that ilk are - at absolute best - 6th defencemen, They're better suited to play the 7/8 role.

Ballard and Tanev are far more capable of playing in the top-four than Vandermeer. Ballard plays his best when he HAS minutes.

I actually see Vandermeer as an upgrade on both Rome and Alberts. When used in the right situation he can be highly effective. He is a big body who can provide some offence, can fight, and can hit but the knock is the ability to stay in the lineup consistently.

Either him or Baker will be the toughest player on our team if one of them sign with us, do it MG.

Vandermeer for sure. Tougher then Bieksa and Patti.

Barker...not very tough. He will fight when he has to and sticks up for team mates, but not very good at it.

Barker is 6'3, 220 pounds, none of our dman with that size.

Alberts 6'5 218
Edler 6'3 215
Garrison 6'2 218

But we are talking about toughness, and Alberts is the softest out of that group.

Hell, I'm 6'3 208. That kind of size isn't considered very big anymore in today's NHL.

Vandermeer is 6'1 215, average/decent size but tough as nails.

That he is. He would be a perfect pick up for the Nucks as a depth defenseman, which is exactly what we need right now. Sign him to a 1 year.

Now THAT is a player that MG should have pushed for. That would have been an amazing pick up for our bottom 6.

Okay, he's big and tough.

When is he going to play exactly? You're gonna put him out there just to fight someone? I'd rather not play with 5 defenseman.

Vandermeer is a plug and a pylon. Why waste a contract on a guy that won't see a single game in the playoffs? And who is he possibly going to replace if he does, Ballard/Tanev? Yeah, no i'd rather have Ballard. (And that's saying something)

Because we need depth defenders in-case of an injury, like Rome and Alberts?

You're sort of defeating your argument though, it doesn't matter who we sign. They're not going to play many games, and are going to get plugger minutes. I'd rather have someone like Vandermeer who can throw down if he has to.

It could also end up being Barker depending on if the PTO rumors are true, but regardless of who it is they aren't going to be logging a lot of games or minutes during games.

We also have Mullen and Joslin. Completely forgot about those plugs, why do we need more defenseman?

If you've watched any of the AHL games from prior to our main guys being called up for camp you'd know why we need another defenseman. Mullen and Joslin aren't cut out to play at the NHL level.

Well some how the Sharks, a top team, felt the need to sign him. Must be doing something right.

Regardless, at this point, he isn't worse then Alberts in terms of defensive ability. Add the fact that he is a VERY solid fighter with plenty of experience, making him a much needed asset on this team.

Agreed. I don't see why Gillis didn't go after him right away on July 1st, I'm sure he wouldn't mind playing back home in Canada.
