From what I've seen it because certain religious groups perceive their ways are being "attacked". As such they make a stink in the media about how all the "other" people are being PC/anti-religious towards them in an effort to combat the reality of their dwindling numbers and influence and in an attempt to stay relevant.

Nope, just like that statement in that movie, no matter how much the machines attack us, they can't get rid of us.
In other words, it doesn't really matter what other people do or say about you, all that matters is what you think and believe.

Children excluded from various blessings, of course. Is this the type of semantics you screw around with, because it's absolutely pitiful...

Organized religion has been quite good at allowing sexual abuse of children and trying to cover it up.

In Canada we have had Royal Commissions of Inquiry into this issue and churches have been dragged kicking and screaming in to the light and forced to apologize and make restitution.

Archbishop Michael Peers clearly offered an apology on behalf of the Anglican Church of Canada in 1993, stating "I am sorry, more than I can say, that we were part of a system which took you and your children from home and family."

Four leaders of the Presbyterian Church signed a statement of apology in 1994. "It is with deep humility and in great sorrow that we come before God and our aboriginal brothers and sisters with our confession," it said.

The United Church of Canada formally apologized to Canada's First Nations people in 1986, and offered its second apology in 1998 for the abuse that happened at residential schools.

"To those individuals who were physically, sexually, and mentally abused as students of the Indian Residential Schools in which the United Church of Canada was involved, I offer you our most sincere apology," the statement by the church's General Council Executive said.

...

Though the Catholic church oversaw three-quarters of Canadian residential schools, it was the last church to have one of its leaders officially address the abuse.

On April 29, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI expressed his "sorrow" to a delegation from Canada's Assembly of First Nations for the abuse and "deplorable" treatment that aboriginal students suffered at Roman Catholic Church-run residential schools.

At the time, then Assembly of First Nations Leader Phil Fontaine said it wasn't an "official apology" but added that he hoped the statement will "close the book" on the issue of apologies for residential school survivors. http://www.cbc.ca/ne...al-schools.html

As that great philosopher the late George Carlin once said:

But, in the meantime what they ought to be doing is telling these priests who took a vow of chastity to keep their hands off the altar boys! Keep your hands to yourself, Father! You know? When Jesus said "Suffer the little children come unto me", that's not what he was talking about!

I have been wishing customers "Merry Christmas" for the past week and a half and everyone has either ignored it or said "same to you". But even the term "Happy Holidays" has religious origins, as "holidays" is derived from "holy days".

I will tell what is pitiful , that one of the world largest religions , Christianity , has treated women as second class citizens since its inception.
Catholicism in particular has kept women from its decision making processes and hierachy not even allowing them to become a priest and say mass in their own communities .

When the church starts treating women as equals , maybe then i will start to believe the generic statement "and peace to all men" includes women .

Personally I adhere to the motto:

"Do unto others... and keep doing it until they lie broken and bleeding upon the ground." (figuratively speaking of course) It is part of what is instilled into a person at law school.

And this whole "Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord" shtick??? Nope I am big believer in vengeance as a matter of personal satisfaction.

I am not a vindictive person and do not consider any particular person my enemy .

I was shot by some one i love , i felt so betrayed and consumed with hatred , and it was not until i forgave him that i gained a measure of happiness and peace in my life , and learnt first hand , that the best revenge is to live well and be happy .

I don't believe in Harper, and i'm on the fence about God, but i believe that Christmas is worth celebrating and it can be freely celebrated by everyone in this country. It's a basic right. And that right is inclusive of weird 'season of reason' atheists as well.

Atheists that celebrate Christmas are all over the place.

Basically, if you take all of the religious stuff out of Christmas, the church, praying, nativity scene, angels on the tree, etc., its still great to give gifts to and spend time with the people you care about.

At least that's why most people in this country still celebrate Christmas. It's about family, not whining about what to call the holidays.

If you can't see that, well, Bah! Humbug! You obviously need more Christmas spirit. ie. Reasoning capability to determine what is truly important.
