seems weird that he agreed to a pto and then signed on the first day of camp.

When a guy has off-ice issues, it makes sense. Get him close to the organization, see where his mind, attitude, and actions are at and if everything seems well, get him on a deal.

I think they saw what they needed to see from him already (player skate sessions and previous seasons). We did hear they've had their eyes on Cam Barker for a few seasons now.

Honestly, I think Gillis would rather prefer to keep Tanev and maybe ship out Ballard because of the cap.

Probably, but Tanev has more value.

Maybe neither will be gone.. just stating there's a possibility.

@David_Strehle
VAN's signing of Cam Barker good sign for Flyers. Canucks had reportedly been requesting Dman for Luongo, should squelch rumors for good.

Another key is that it is a 48 game season in a very short period of time, he might get more games per capita than usual because of this.

Alberts - Barker would be a pretty huge bottom pairing!

Solid zero-risk signing that allows the Canucks to focus on bolstering their offense and future with any upcoming Luongo deal rather than trying to get back Dmen for depth.

Very good deal.

Vigneault on one-year Cam Barker deal: "Our guys felt he has a lot of potential. It reminds me of Chris Higgins going through four teams."

I'm confused. This guys is just a more skilled version of Alberts but prone to even more defensive lapses. Thought the farm would handle our 8-10 depth requirements.

Ballard going sooner than later?

Here's to hoping he can turn his career around with the Canucks! There isn't much of a risk giving him a shot, and it could pay dividends if he plays well.

Why not I guess.
Expect him to be more of a 6th/7th D, depending on if we ship Ballard out or not.
For 1 year and 700k, it could only really end up as a good idea. If he can't rebound from a few lackluster seasons, then at least he didn't cost anything.

he adds much needed depth to the blue line has nhl experience looked good in the spangler cup and maybe matured enough to figure out this could be his last shot in the show, playing with something to prove is never a bad thing. torres higgins ect...

Safe signing, and regardless of whether he pans out better than expected (like maybe he becomes the 3rd overall-esque player which was drafted) or not, it's a good depth move.

1 year, $700 K

Not a bad depth signing for the Canucks. Might help out in the PP situations but shouldn't play more than 5-10 min/game.

So our D now looks like this:

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Garrison
Ballard-Alberts/Barker
Tanev

Love that depth on D. Now hopefully Gillis solves our center position problem.

Good signing, solid depth defenseman in a sortened season where injuries could be key. Also correct me if Im wrong, but because his cap hit is $700,000 if he were to go to the minors under the new CBA his salary wouldnt count against the cap as contracts of $900,000 or less dont?

If thats the case then no risk for us if he makes the team, great but if he bombs we can just send him to the minors with no salary cap complications.

Which leads to the question of what the Canucks will do with Alberts as his salary is 1.1 mil I believe and would count against the cap if he were in the minors. Or maybe with the Canucks bad luck with defenseman and injuries they will need them all.

Anyone else think that with this signing, it might be better to send Tanev down and give him top line minutes?

Cam Barker at one time used to be a good player and was really hyped during the draft. I don't know what happened to him after the Chicago trade. Am hoping he makes a comeback and get back to his old form when he was playing in Chicago.

good signing he's a big body and 700k for 1 year is a good contract. Maybe he stumbles onto an epiphany and decides to turn his life around... here's to wistful thinking.

Oilers fans correctly pointing to me how Barker struggled last year. Agreed. But I just feel if healthy, he could be a good depth fit in Van
