OTTAWA – Ottawa Senators (@Senators) general manager Pierre Dorion announced today that the club has agreed to terms with defenceman Cody Ceci to a two-year contract which will run through the end of the 2017-18 National Hockey League season. The average annual value of the contract is $2.8 million ($2.25M, $3.35M).

Ceci, 22, established new NHL career highs in goals (10), points (26) and penalty minutes (18) while matching his career high for assists (16) over 75 games with the Senators during the 2015-16 season. Upon the conclusion of the season, he also skated with Team Canada at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Moscow/St. Petersburg, Russia. In 10 games with Team Canada, he scored one goal and earned five assists while helping the team to a gold medal.

An Ottawa native, Ceci has registered 56 points (18 goals, 38 assists) and 38 penalty minutes over 205 NHL games, all of which have occurred with the Senators. He also has two assists over six NHL playoff games.

The Senators’ first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft, Ceci spent three-plus seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s, before compelting his major junior career with the Owen Sound Attack. He began his professional career with the Binghamton Senators in 2013-14 before being recalled to the NHL for the first time on Dec. 12, 2013.

Like Ceci an awful lot. And this contract, as a bridge, is a good indicator of what Trouba will receive, should he choose a bridge contract. If not, he'll have to look at the Seth Jones contract to get a good idea of what a long term deal will look like.

If Trouba was willing to accept anything remotely near 3 million, the deal would already be done.

And he shouldn't have to. His production has been superior so far (26% more points-per-game thus far). And he has done it consistently, whereas Cody's earlier production was not quite there.

However, Ceci's rise in production could be a sign of continuing improvement, hence he may have favoured the bridge contract. Whereas Trouba's has been declining, so I could see his camp trying to get him locked in for longer term in case the trend continues.

Very Trou(ba). Thank you.

The other reported belief (via Gary Lawless) is that Trouba has been largely paired with a poor partner in all aspects, both offensively and defensively, in Mark Stuart. He also hasn't been given first unit power play time. And his numbers (offensively and defensively), when paired with Byfuglien or Enstrom, predictably look a lot better.

So the belief is that Trouba is expecting more because his numbers aren't as good, due to playing lower pairing minutes and stuck with a sh*tty defensive partner.
