  1. I figured his vaccination chip has a direct link to NHL.com.
  2. I wasn't thinking of the health aspects of a third shot, I was thinking of the financial costs. Is it really surprising that a drug company (or any other company) will come out and say people should use as much of their product as possible? Let's wait for the results to be independently verified to ensure that we're getting a bang for our (taxpayer's) buck.
  3. From the article: "The data have not yet been peer-reviewed or published." Not that I don't trust pharmaceutical companies but it is in Pfizer's coroporate interest to promote/sell as many of these shots as they can. I think I'll wait until other authorities have had a chance to study the data. And it if it is accurate, by all means let's go.
  4. But doesn't that work both ways? That is, mightn't there be people here who have endorsed Benning and won't change their opinion even if the team continually tanks, simply because it would mean admitting they were wrong? Confirmation bias is a tricky thing.
  5. I wonder who establishes her itinerary? Could she decide, on her own, to visit all the sites that don't have clean drinking water? Or the sites with unmarked graves? Granted, she couldn't do much on her own about them but it would keep attention on these issues.
  6. And a bit of good news about the resources being used against the fire: https://www.castanet.net/news/Vernon/340991/Wildfire-near-Westwold-growing-quickly-on-Sunday One hundred firefighters and 13 support staff from Quebec will arrive at the Okanagan Complex today. They will be staying in the camp and will be assigned to the White Rock fire. They will be briefed and oriented today and should be working on the fire by Monday, the wildfire service says. On the ground, heavy equipment is being used to construct large, cleared areas at regular intervals along the guard lines. The "safe zones" provide crews and equipment a safe place to take shelter in if fire behaviour should suddenly increase. A ground-based retardant unit reinforced guard lines Saturday, and four helicopters were bucketing water to cool and slow the spread of the fire.
  7. The first step in becoming a contender for the Stanley Cup is being able to make the playoffs. If they were to miss the playoffs again this year, I see no reason why we would expect this current core to grow into a contender. (But they're going to make the playoffs this year. )
  8. Let me repeat: I think the Canucks are going to get into the playoffs this year. But IF they should miss the playoffs again this year, why do you think we'll make the playoffs next year or the year after with this group? To me, if the Canucks miss the playoffs this year without any extenuating circumstances, it will show that I, and most everyone else here, have seriously over-rated our core group. And it should be blown up. But since the Canucks ARE going to make the playoffs this year, this discussion is really kind of theoretical. (We hope.)
  9. Thing is, if our core is very good they should make the playoffs. If they don't make the playoffs, it suggests that our core isn't as good as we like to think it is.
  10. #70 Canada beats #50 Costa Rica 2-0 in the Gold Cup quarter-finals. Canada dominated the game and deserved the win. The only drawback was that Cavalleni and Steven Vitória picked up yellow cards which, when coupled with their previous yellow cards, will keep them out of the semi-finals. And speaking of that semi-final: it will be against #11 Mexico on Thursday. I'm going to enjoy today's win and hope for the best on Thursday.
  11. Why not? If Petey, BO, Miller, Demko, Boeser et al aren't good enough to get us into the playoffs, why is it so important to hold onto them? BTW: That being said, I expect the Canucks to make the playoffs this year.
  12. If we have another season like we just had (assuming it's a regular regular season - no bubble, no massive amount of injuries etc), not only will Benning be gone but this team should be blown up and we start over again. This team has to make the playoffs this year. If they don't, it can only mean that OEL and Garland were not the players we hoped they were and/or , and more importantly, the core group of this team isn't as talented as we thought they were. Gonna be an interesting season.
  13. Whitecaps draw LAFC 2 - 2 in their best game of the season (even though they blew a 2-0 lead). Gotta love those LAFC fans, though. From start to finish, they're on.
  14. So am I, until proven otherwise. If Benning has guessed correctly, he's brought in the first line defenseman that we've needed. If he's guessed wrongly, he's hamstrung this franchise for the next six years. Gonna be interesting.
  15. I hope you're right. One thing that concerns me is that OEL signed his eight year contract two years ago. From what I've read and heard, for the past two years his performance has declined. This raises the thought that he's one of those players who has secured his financial future and is now coasting. On the other hand, perhaps, as you say, he was affected by the situation in Arizona and will rebound in Vancouver. In any event, it's gonna be interesting to watch how all this plays out. Fingers crossed.
  16. The OEL trade makes this upcoming season a lot more interesting. Most people that I've heard seem to think that Garland is going to be a solid player. If OEL turns out to be a first line defenceman this season and for, say, the next three years after, this will be regarded as a terrific trade. If he continues what some see as a downward spiral, and we're stuck with another Swedish albatross contract, even more people will be turning on Benning. Should be fun to watch which way it goes. And it starts this season. Here's hoping it goes the right way.
  17. There does seem to be some controversy over whether enough is being done. Global News did a short piece on this yesterday: https://globalnews.ca/video/8056324/westwold-residents-want-more-wildfire-resources
  18. Just in time for the Whitecaps run to the playoffs! ******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/mls-canadian-teams-to-host-home-matches-in-canada-in-august Major League Soccer announced Friday that the league's three Canadian clubs will host August home matches at their home stadiums in Canada. MLS teams will continue to abide by the cross-border public health protocols enacted on July 5 by the Canadian government, which are required of all individuals entering the country. In accordance with the national protocols, fully-vaccinated players and staff are not subject to a quarantine period. However, all individuals must conduct molecular COVID-19 testing prior to travel and upon arrival in Canada. MLS remains in communication with the Canadian government regarding plans for CF Montréal, Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC to host their remaining home matches in Canada pursuant to a National Interest Exemption. All three Canadian teams will be permitted to have fans and media in attendance at matches, in compliance with all national and regional guidelines.
  19. That's the way it used to be: https://olympics.com/ioc/faq/history-and-origin-of-the-games/since-when-have-the-summer-and-winter-games-no-longer-been-held-in-the-same-year From 1924 to 1992, the Summer and Winter Games were each held in the same year, every four years. This four years period is called "Olympiad". The last Summer and Winter Games held in the same year were in Barcelona (Summer) and Albertville (Winter) in 1992. Since then, the Summer and Winter Games are each still held every four years but the Summer Games are celebrated during the first year of an Olympiad and the Winter Games held in the third year.
  20. And....TA DA......they have got it back online. ************************************************************************************************************************* https://www.cnet.com/news/nasas-hubble-space-telescope-lives-switch-to-backup-hardware-fixes-glitch/?ftag=CAD-03-10abj4f&bhid=27387568584822941599927611586826&mid=13441331&cid=1494321690 NASA's beloved Hubble Space Telescope has been facing one of its greatest challenges, a technical glitch that left it in safe mode for over a month. Last week, NASA finally tracked down the source of the issue and tried a new fix. It worked. "NASA has successfully switched to backup hardware on the Hubble Space Telescope, including powering on the backup payload computer, on July 15," the space agency said Friday. The telescope resumed science operations over the weekend. "I'm proud of the Hubble team, from current members to Hubble alumni who stepped in to lend their support and expertise," said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson in a statement Saturday. "Thanks to their dedication and thoughtful work, Hubble will continue to build on its 31-year legacy, broadening our horizons with its view of the universe."
  21. Nope. Still not crazy about it. Canadian Olympic Team Collection x Levi's Unisex Replica Closing Ceremony Trucker Jacket Price reduced from$198to $138.60
  22. A rather conspicuous grey spot where China should be. Why would they not be reporting the breakdown of first and second doses?
  23. So Canada loses to the US 0-1 in the Gold Cup, snapping their eight game winning streak. I thought Canada played well (aside from the opening 20 seconds when the Americans scored one of the fastest goals in Gold Cup history). After taking the early lead, the US emulated the Whitecaps and, for a lot of the game, seem to go into a defensive shell, trying to protect their lead. It worked this time but had the Canadians had a bit more accuracy around the net the result could easily have been different. I know Canada is without its two best players in this tournament. I don't know how many high profile Americans are not playing in this tournament. So it's difficult to assess where Canada stacks up against one of the better teams in their conference. For if the American team we watched today is, more or less, their complete team then Canada has made some major strides. On the other hand, if the Americans were missing a half dozen of their regulars, we still have a ways to go. Anyways, on to the quarter-finals.
