  1. Interesting proposal to trade down. Definitely always a debate for any team when you're just outside the top 5. Thanks for sharing the options for later in the first round. Looks like you're right. Still some real gems there later on. With that being said, I personally would still rather see the Canucks keep their spot in that 7-10 range and get more of a truly high end forward vs 2 maybes. I'm eyeing one of Benson (least likely with where Canucks will be), Smith, or Yager. Maybe Dvorsky. With all of the recent signings on D, I really hope the Canucks pick a forward with their first pick (and hopefully not an off-the-board wildcard...). Either way, the organizational depth will look a heck of a lot better going into next season which will be nice.
  2. I agree. My distaste for the Flames is strong enough that I'd love to see the Canucks beat them and hopefully prevent them from making the playoffs and then hopefully the Canucks lose the rest to maintain a good draft spot.
  3. I know Sutter has been injured a lot in the past which is a valid argument against re-signing him but when he is in the lineup, he is invaluable. He wins faceoffs, kills penalties, plays tough minutes, and actually still can score goals (which we desperately need), albeit not at the rate people seem to want out of him. And apparently he's a great locker room guy. Much more than can be said for any of the other bottom 6 guys that have been in our lineup the last couple years (exception would be Motte who I'm a huge fan of).
  4. Now that we know he's playing next year, I guarantee you he's back with the Canucks. Hopefully he'll take a super cheap 1 year deal
  5. Well, the offseason is upon us. In my personal opinion, I believe the best way to improve the team going into next season is through signings. I know Jimbo says nothing is out of the question this offseason in terms of improving the team, but I would really rather not have him make any more stupid trades and give away a bunch of draft picks in lopsided trades that he "thinks" will help. With that being said, I've looked at the list of UFAs this summer and here are there are some great options that the Canucks shouldn't have to severely overpay: Top 9 options: Alexander Wennberg Mattias Janmark Joel Armia Blake Coleman Erik Haula Tomas Nosek Mikael Granlund Bottom 9 options: Brock Mcginn Barclay Goodrow Cedric Paquette (for toughness) Riley Sheahan (good faceoff guy and kills penalties) Devon Shore Drake Caggiula Tobias Rieder I also wouldn't mind seeing them bring back Sutter maybe on a 2 year deal at $1.5 mil/year. He brings a lot of intangibles to the team both in the locker room and on the ice These are all guys who I believe can be had for a reasonable salary compared to their output and I think could be great value signings for the Canucks. If they can sign Petey and Hughes at reasonable salaries (maybe $8-9 mil per season) and they buy out Beagle, Eriksson, Virtanen, and possibly Roussel, I think they'll have some room to work with in order to sign 1 or 2 of the guys I listed (maybe 1 top 9 guy and a . If they buy out all those guys, it will save them about $8.5 mil by the looks of it. I know there will still be some creativity needed and there is also the expansion draft (hopefully Seattle takes Holtby), but smart signings hopefully will make up the majority of the changes/additions this summer. Either way, it should be interesting as always to see what trouble Benning gets himself into this summer. Thoughts?
  6. If there's no AHL season then that's fine. If there is, there's no point in having those guys in those roles getting extremely limited playing time therefore doing nothing for their development. I'd much rather have them playing top pair minutes in Utica if there is a season. We'll see...
  7. Top 3? Are you calling Myers a top 3 dman? Or are you already anointing Rathbone a top 3 NHL dman before he's played a single game in the league? As I see it, we have a top 2 and 4 question marks after next year. We'll see how the kids develop and luckily cap space frees up with the other expiring contracts so Benning can bring someone else in if needed
  8. With how this offseason has gone, it looks like Rafferty and/or Chatfield will be in the lineup to fill the RD spots. That's a lot of pressure on 2 guys who I personally feel aren't quite ready yet. Rafferty looks very promising after a great first year in Utica but why rush him. Chatfield, on the other hand, I'm still very unsure about. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of him, but to me there really is nothing about his game to get excited about at all.
  9. Fantenberg will cost pennies. Great value for the money. Re-sign him. He was very reliable in the playoffs. Not flashy but sure is smart. All you can ask for from a 6/7 D. And Juolevi is ready to be a bigger part of this team as long as he can finally stay healthy. Stecher is not worth what he'll want. Tons of heart and gives 100% every night, but just too small. Period. See 2020 playoffs. Let him walk. Rathbone will need a year in Utica before he's ready despite what people on here are saying. Huges-Tanev Edler-Myers Benn/Juolevi-Fantenberg Rafferty
  10. 1) Find any way possible to get Loui Eriksson off the books and out of town. The guy is useless and yes, it may be easier to trade him next year with only one season left on his contract, but at this point he's completely dead weight who can't do anything anymore and is taking up room in the system on top of eating up an extremely valuable $6mil. 2) Sign Toffoli, Virtanen, Tanev and Motte. Toffoli keeps our stacked top 6 intact (and unlike other people on here I think he played very well in the playoffs). Virtanen has grown and continues to get better. I think he's still a valuable part of this team (you can't buy that shot or speed for the amount we'll sign Virtanen for). And Tanev and Motte? Well, those are no-brainers. 3) Let Stecher walk. I absolutely love this guy's heart and effort, but neither can overcome his size unfortunately. That became painfully obvious in the playoffs. Our money is much better spent on re-signing Fantenberg who proved in the playoffs just how solid and reliable he is (doesn't need to be flashy). On top of that, Juolevi is ready to finally claim his spot in the NHL as long as he can stay healthy. I was super impressed with what I saw in his brief playoff action. He looks calm and smart with the puck. And apparently he really impressed the coaching staff at camp. 4) Let Markstrom walk. Jim Benning can say all he wants about wanting to keep him and wanting to have 2 good goalies. The only logical choice in my mind is to let him walk. If they sign him, the rest of the team will suffer and we'll be back in the same position as this year's playoffs: relying on Vezina performances every night to win. 5) Trade Roussel - it's clear that this guy has nothing left in the tank and is a former shell of his old self. I don't know it's the concussion or just age, but he's not even near worth what we're paying him. Ship him out! 6) Keep Sutter - when he's able to stay healthy, he still brings a lot to our team. I would go on record and say he's the 2nd best 2 way player on our team besides Horvat. People just look at his contract and think "not worth it" just because he's not doing something flashy or noticeable every night. He can play 3rd or 4th line, kills penalties, wins faceoffs, and actually has pretty decent hands for the odd goal. That package is pretty hard to replace. In summary, let me say this: team chemistry was a HUGE part of the Canucks' success this year. It's a great group of guys and great mix. If Benning is able to make smart moves and the hard decisions, it is possible to keep 90% of that group together. We have internal candidates who can step in when needed (ie. Macewan and Lind, Juolevi and Rafferty). I feel like Macewan can be our tough guy with a little more seasoning. Absolutely no need to upset the chemistry by making all sorts of trades like most of you are proposing. Just trades to get rid of a couple of the awful contracts. Oh. And I agree with a couple of you on here who said get rid of Newell Brown. 100% agree. He's been around way too long and we could use a fresh face running the PP. That'll make a huge difference. But we all know that'll never happen. Oh well, wishful thinking.
  11. Well, considering we will most likely be picking a forward at #6 (or wherever we end up in the first round depending on trades), I say pick the best defenceman with our 2nd round pick (need to stock up on D). I like the suggestion of Jack Glover as well as Alexis Vanier, Alex Peters, or Jack Dougherty.
  12. This guy definitely has a lot of potential and good size and it's great that he's getting playoff experience as well (playing at a high level). I would definitely put him on the list of 3-4 guys we should be looking at drafting. The others I like would be Dal Colle, Ehlers, and Virtanen.
  13. Too bad. I was definitely leaning towards giving Torts another chance. It wasn't all his fault this year. Some blame has to be laid on the players. Torts Pros: passionate guy who has had success in the NHL and his system actually worked fairly well for the first half of the season. Cons: overplayed the Sedins, severely underplayed the fourth line, didn't keep his emotions in check, mishandled goalie situation. Plus I don't think the owners and management liked his style of play. In the end, I guess the cons outweighed the pros and obviously some players didn't like him as you'd think Linden got some input from them before making this decision.
  14. Didn't back it up? He put the team on his back in game 2. Sure he's been inconsistent over the last couple years but he's dealt with a number of injuries. He's still by far our best all-around player. He's invested too much in Van city and won't walk.
  15. Way to contradict yourself. The reason we would go after Moulson would be FOR Kesler's line.
  16. Nailed it. Too many people on the "trade Kesler" bandwagon. Would leave a HUGE hole on our team. Kes is the guy to build around. Heart and soul, two-way guy, great on the draw, still young. Only way he leaves is if he wants to. We can get just as much in return for one or both of the Sedins and/or Edler.
  17. I think Torts does deserve one more chance but he NEEDS to learn to play more of a 4 line game. The 4th line needs to play more than 5 minutes a game to really show their stuff. And the top players cannot be killing penalties. That's what the 3rd and 4th liners are for. And last of all, Torts needs to keep his emotions in check behind the bench. Successful coaches keep their teams calm and cool and confident in all situations.
  18. Burrows has a couple more effective years as a solid checker/penalty killer/agitator who scores 10-15 goals. Is he overpaid? Maybe. But I think he deserves at least another year (hopefully healthy) to show his stuff.
  19. I really like this kid's skill set. Elite speed, great hands, laser shot, physical, drives to the net. What's not to like. Plus he's a North American guy who we don't have to worry about signing with the KHL. However, I still say we take Fleury at 6 as we have more of a need for a top-tier defenseman. But so do a couple of other teams in the top 10. So 1st choice Fleury, 2nd choice Virtanen.
  20. Awesome! Hopefully this is true. I agree that his experience and track record are unmatched by any other candidate out there right now. Would be a huge score for the Canucks if they get him. Nice write-up by the way...
  21. Was sad to see so many empty seats. Understandable though. And why wasn't Schroeder played? We need to get him in their for evaluation purposes going into the summer. I don't think he was given enough opportunity after coming back from injury to really make a proper case one way or another for himself.
  22. Very happy with this hiring. I really think it was a great choice. Linden is not only a fan favorite, he is also very well respected around the league. He is passionate about winning and may not have NHL management experience, but he has worked with the NHLPA and has managed the gyms under his name. And I believe he will make sure that he has the right people around him to guide him though his early days. Good luck Trevor!
  23. It should be interesting to see what the Canucks do at this year's draft. We all know that either Garrison or Edler will be traded this summer (most likely at the draft) and a couple other guys could be traded as well. So we could move up. Despite there being a number of highly skilled offensive forwards available this year, I can't stress enough how badly we need more high end defensive depth. Championship teams ALWAYS have stud defensemen. Chicago: Keith, Seabrook. Boston: Chara. LA: Doughty, and on and on. Our only real high quality defenseman coming up at the moment is Corrado and even he's no guarantee. We've already got some incredible young forwards lighting up the OHL right now so let's pick up that franchise defenseman. If we make a trade and move up to #1 or 2, pick Eckblad. But no pressure to do so as I see Haydn Fleury right in the 8th-11th pick range that we'll fall.
  24. Look, this needed to happen. Mike Gillis really hasn't done much to bring in the right pieces since he took over. He took over a very good nucleus that almost won the cup and did nothing to maintain the right secondary pieces to keep the success going. He was also terrible at drafting (although the majority of that actually falls on the scouts and his supporting staff who advise him). All he did was re-sign most of the team to long term contracts with no-trade clauses so it makes it way more difficult to make changes now. He was also really good at trading players away for nothing. He completely mis-handled the Schneider-Luongo saga. The list goes on..... It was the right move. Now to hire a new GM and re-evaluate the performance of the rest of the front office/management/scouts so that we can go forward with the best staff possible to get us back to the top!
  25. I can't even believe that we're talking about buying out a player like Garrison!! Look, either Garrison or Edler won't be back next year but players like this just don't get bought out (unless they absolutely refuse to waive their no-trade clause). One of them will most likely be dealt for some future assets. On that topic, it would be a tough decision which one to trade. They're both big defensemen who can both log a lot of minutes and both have a great shot. Edler is a little younger. Garrison tends to make safer plays but also is a little slower. If they keep Garrison, he's gotta work on hitting the net. A great shot is only good if it on target!
