I’m sure Virtanen is a fun guy.

Its great to have personality but you gotta get serious when it’s time to get serious.

Im not saying that’s the reason but I can see how he would have fit better in Vegas and Washington with their big personalities. Our guys seem like they take a more serious approach at work.

Can’t tell if you’re making a direct comparison to Jake but that’s a bit off base. I understand you gotta be professional but our team is in serious need of some personality, a swagger of sorts.

If there’s one thing I hate about this sport it’s that the players are generally super boring. The generic hockey phrases make me cringe soooooo hard.

I like how they say “things haven’t worked out for Schmidt”

News flash - nothing worked out for the Canucks this year. May as well put Petey on the block too for being injured. Didn’t work out for him either did it

Exactly. Some people are so impatient. Anyone who has watched Schmidt’s play from previous years would know that he’s better than what he showed last season. Talk of his personality rubbing people the wrong way makes me laugh. How boring of a team are we if the fun guy gets run out of town for showing some personality.

IMHO, bad move for the same reason I think Green is a terrible coach, the turn the other cheek style of play does not win Cups in the salary cap era no matter how talented a team may be. We need to build a tough team, not take the toughness out of our players like we’ve been doing.

Argue with me all you want, I expect it because you’re all blinded by your respect for the Sedins, I respect them too but broke my rose coloured glasses long ago, I won’t argue back, instead I’ll put both my avatar and my siggy on the line, I’ll ditch them both if next season we win just one playoff game

Or maybe the twins see the flaws in their games and know how to tweak in order to be successful. I’ve never seen those two as stubborn people. Don’t forget they were dominant at stages in their careers, mvp level. Literally a game away from the holy grail. I’m sure they know a thing or two about the game. Not to mention I’m sure they’re absolutely determined to bring a cup to Vancouver. Unfinished business.

They can dump a fair amount of weight it appears.

Shame they had such awful drafting outside of the top 10 or else they'd have had some ugly depth to be playing with

I just think when you consider what the cost to acquire Jones would be (starting point would be Girard/Byram + ), he just doesn’t move the needle enough imo. For most defenses in the league, absolutely, but Colorado has some studs back there.

Jones is going to Colorado.  They have cap space, it's his hometown and Sakic almost drafted him by all accounts.

I'd bet on the Avs being the home of Jones

I think the Avs will probably want to get their guys signed before they start swinging for big name dmen, especially considering how good their back end was this year.

@Alflives instead of Nuge, why not make a run at Hyman? I think he'd fit Green's game much better, he's good on either wing and brings some bite.

Hyman might be a tad pricey for us, as well as Nuge. A name that keeps popping up for me is Armia, and you would think he would come a bit cheaper than those two. Though I think he probably re-signs in Montreal

I don’t think we will be looking to sign an 8 million dollar d man unless we ship out someone like Schmidt or Myers.

Reinhart should be able to be signed at a fairly reasonable price with a hometown discount.

The D men we should be targeting are guys like Cernak, Savard, or Parayko. Guys that won’t likely cost a 1st and will be on more reasonable contracts. We already have Hughes and Rathbone as very good puck movers. We need a balance with gritty stay at home guys.

Parayko would be nice but would likely cost a first I would think.

Gotta let it go Jan. Those wins weren't for the fans, the coaches, management, nothing. Those last few wins were for the team, and they earned him. I would have been embarrassed to be a Canuck if they mailed it in for a draft pick. The kids want to win, we can only respect that and support them. We are going to get a hell of a player at 9.

Especially in a year where the draft is going to be extremely unpredictable. Hard to get a proper read on most of them.

We aren't drafting based on current needs. We are drafting BPA regardless of position. Benning has stated this and also said he has 9 guys he really likes, so if Wallstedt is on that list and he's there, he may get chosen.

As for why we may pick a goalie. It isn't to replace Demko necessarily. We don't know where DiPietro is at in terms of NHL status yet and (knock on wood) something could happen to Demko (he has had two concussions already). If Demko is still at the top of his game when Wallstedt is ready (I expect at least 3 seasons), then we have the option of moving Demko or having Wallstedt as a backup. We have seen teams like NYI with Sorokin and Minnesota with Kaaponen, etc where there will be a transition. Another poster brought up Tampa having Vasilevskiy, which allowed them to move Bishop, which eventually acquired them a RHD in Cernak. So if Wallstedt is the BPA, then you're getting the best value for that pick and can work from a position of strength to fill a position of need (can move DiPietro sooner to fill a need now or make a move down the road when Wallstedt is ready).

I suppose that’s a good way of looking at it. I just feel like there’s some risk involved with taking a goalie that high, especially when we have so many other areas of need. Though if you potentially get the most value, whether that’s trading either him or Demko down the line, that does make lots of sense.

    I dunno man.

Price, Flower, Brodeur, Luongo, Fuhr, Barasso, Rask, Dubnyk, Vasilevski, Spencer Knight looks like a beaut. All 1st round picks.

Rick Dipetro is more the exception than the rule.

I do like Sillinger as well though I shaved him and Svechkov off the list for simplicity as they are a bit more reaching than Lysell, Edvinsson.

If we had stuck with marky instead of demmer than I would say sure, draft a goalie. I just don’t see us taking a goalie that early when we have way more pressing needs. Demko is just starting to reach stardom, I don’t see why we would want to try to find his replacement at this stage.

Nah, I think it came down to his recent performance at the U18s.  He looked fantastic out there.

Oh for sure I don’t doubt that he’s a good player, just more curious if he gets a bit of a bump due to the fact he’s Canadian. I do believe there’s a bit of a bias towards Canadians when it comes to hockey. As far as the Canucks go, something about drafting a shoot first center puts me off a bit.

  12. Out of curiosity, does anyone think McTacish benefits from the fact that he’s Canadian? Say he was the same player, but Finnish, does he still rank within the top 10? Or is he viewed as more of a Svechkov who’s kinda ranked all over the place. I feel that sometimes the Canadian kids get a bit more hype than they deserve. Everyone puts a bit more value on the rugged style Canadian.

I guess....but the "charge" is a result of Sheifele having to skate the length of the rink at top speed. In the end, it comes down to was he trying to kill Evans, or was he trying to prevent a goal?

I think he was trying to prevent the goal.

A charge is a charge though, it doesn’t matter what the intent was. He came in with excessive speed and blew the guy up. He wasn’t just trying to put the body on him, look at how huge his follow through is. And if people wanna say that his follow through was a result of the speed he was going then that proves the point even further. He’s charging a vulnerable player when he could have made another play. I just don’t think this kind of hit is good for the game.

Not irrelevant. Could him not slowing down to predatorily go for a hit, have given him a chance to save a goal in a 4-3 game with a minute left?

the answer is yes. Scheifele chose the hit over the defensive play and will pay a price for it. His team already paid a price, they’re down 1-0 and a star player for X amount of games.

I really don’t understand how any Canuck fan can defend him. He’s time and time again been such a whiny bit*h against us and has made several dirty plays against us, in scrums etc... He’s not at all a respectable player and he showed the hockey world what he really prioritized. His ego. Not his team.

Never been a big fan of "what ifs", but as long as we're doing this:

What if Sheifele gets there a split second earlier and keep Evans from scoring? He still skated the same speed...from the same distance....Evans is still injured....

Is it still a "dirty" play?

It’s still a charge, I don’t understand why this point keeps getting missed. It’s a dangerous play that could have been avoided. Everyone keeps saying that hitting him that way was the only way to prevent a goal, which is clearly wrong, seeing as he scored anyways.

its a sad thing that you never see stuff like this again because all these idiots SJW who never played sports have an opinions. What happened to keep your head up and don't admire your pass. This generation of players are lucky Stevens and Kronwall are not playing

It’s usually the guys that have played sports and understand the severity of the injuries that want the excessively violent stuff gone. Hockey will always be a physical game, but I don’t get how you think it’s sad that you don’t get to see guys KO’d as much anymore.
