  1. Honestly folks, I'm Jewish and I'm really not entirely that offended by this kid picking Mein Kampf as his favorite book. I think this issue warrants some exploration so bare with me.

In what context is it his favorite book? Maybe he learned for the incoherent ramblings of a mad man? Maybe the book compelled him to abhor the National Socialist ideology? Does this necessarily mean that this kid should be punished or that he himself is a Nazi? Obviously this was an impulsive, foolish choice for this young man to make. But should he be condemned forever for it? Should he have to go $10,000 in debt to pay for these yearbooks? Is this entirely on him? What about the person that was supposed to PROOF READ the yearbook to make sure nothing offensive was written in it? Everybody knows how impulsive 16-18 year old kids can be. Some of them have a lot of aggression and anger pent up after they finish their high school years. How many inappropriate things have you seen written in yearbooks? I've seen a few but usually they're pretty PG. Nobody wants to look at their mothers yearbook and discover something obscene about their past.

Sometimes aggression comes out in ways that are messy and unfortunately now this young man has embarrassed his school, his family, his piers, his friends, and his community. His reputation may never recovery from this. And for what? Is he even a Nazi? Does he know enough about Nazi dogma to know whether or not he fits in with their vision? I mean there were thousands of people in the holocaust who thought they were ethnic Germans. They had German names, they ate German food, they spoke the German language and everyone they knew was German. All of a sudden, a couple of stormtroopers show up at their house and tell them they have to relocate to a ghetto because one their grandparents had the surname Cohen. They didn't think they had anything to do with the Jews. The stormtrooper smirks at the victim and says "Jews don't get to decide whether they're Jewish or not". The next thing they know their standing in at thin pajama uniform, forced to do hard labor while they freeze to death under a massive cloud of human ashes. After all that suffering, they die suffocating on toxic gas when these Nazis decide they don't have a use for them anymore. Do I think some high school kid who is growing up in New York really wants to associate themselves with that kind of wanton disregard for human life? No, I don't.  He's probably very confused. Just my $0.02, hopefully nobody was offended.

    Eklund

    2:

    Edvinsson

    Johnson

    McTavish

    Guenther

    Wallstedt

I think Guenther belongs in the first tier and I think room should be made for Cole Sillinger in tier 2. Sillinger, however, isn't necessarily better than anyone on that list but I'd say he's equal to Johnson and McTavish in terms of potential.

The four players I want available by pick #9 are Edvinsson, Guenther, Johnson or Clarke. We get one of these four guys and pick BPA for the rest of the draft I'm confident we'll snag 1-3 players who will be NHL ready over the next three years. Next year's draft is also exciting, with talents like Brad Lambert, Matthew Savoie, Juraj Slafkovsky, Shane Wright, Rutger McGroarty and Logan Cooley, most of whom are centers. We score a pick between 6-14 next year, we'll get another top 4 defender or top six forward in the first round. Let's say we get Edvinsson in 2021 and Slafkvosky in 2022, all of a sudden we're back on the road as a powerhouse. By the 2022 NHL Draft, which will likely be in June, it might make sense for ownership to bring in a guy with the same ideas that ex-GM Mike Gillis had. Whoever that GM is, maybe it's Tulsky in Carolina or Gilman in Toronto who come here and finish what JB started. We'll be a powerhouse in no time.

If you don't believe me, just take a look:

    SLAFKOVSKY PETTERSSON HOGLANDER

    MILLER HORVAT BOESER

    PEARSON LIND PODKOLZIN

    MOTTE 4C LOCKWOOD

    HUGHES SCHMIDT(MINUTE MUNCHERS)

    RATHBONE/JUOLEVI WOO(SHUTDOWN PAIRING)

EDVINSSON/RATHBONE MYERS/EDVINSSON (TWO BIG MEN, OFFENSE)

Quinn Hughes is not getting the respect he deserves.   He came in straight from 1 year of college and has become, already, the best offensive defenseman in club history.  He is also pretty effective defensively and will only get better.  A 3rd line center can be signed.  A Quinn Hughes cannot be acquired, accept if you are lucky enough that John Chayka is an idiot and takes Barrett f-ing Hayton.  If the draft was re-done, some GMs might take Hughes 1st OA IMHO.

Ty Smith is a very good player but will not win Norris Trophies.  Quinn will be in the running a bunch of times.  Tbh I wouldn't trade him for Smith and Jack Hughes, let alone Zacha.  He is a unicorn, just enjoy

I agree that trading Hughes is a terrible idea. I'm going to sound like a broken record here but trading Quinn would be a waste of resources. And why would he trade him to New Jersey for Ty Smith lol? So that Luke, Jack and Quinn can play on the same team? What if they don't want to play on the same team? Not everyone is hunky dory with their siblings, some of us want to stay as far away from them as possible. You're right about Barrett Hayton being a bad pick, at least thus far. Pavel Zacha? I think if Seattle gets an opportunity to pick him, his size and skill level could probably see him have a Bennett-like elevation in play. I think he's that good. But New Jersey isn't a good trading partner for us unless we're moving up (or down) in this draft

True.  I was just referring to the 4 players that were mentioned.  McDavid would be starting at 3 #1 OA picks PLUS a top 6 player PLUS a top prospect.

Edmonton would be insane to trade McDavid. Without him, they're a lottery team all over again.

U imagine if we gave up petterson for this years 1OA and thats it, id be livid.

We're not trading Pettersson for a draft pick. We already put millions of development dollars into him, whether it be video, conditioning, weight-lifting, dieting, skating and the list goes on. Teams do not trade guys they've invested into for a draft pick that they're going to have to invest even more money into. It makes no sense business wise. That's why teams don't trade young players for draft picks, they trade older players for draft picks to teams that need help to make the playoffs. Once the team that acquires the rental makes the playoffs, they make money off of TV revenue, tickets, jerseys, endorsements and so on, which makes trading the draft pick worthwhile financially. That's what this game is about, dollars and cents. If you look at the dollars and the cents, it would be a foolhardy endeavor to trade Pettersson instead of doubling down on the investment especially after we won a playoff round last year. Ownership would like to win a championship, but if we make the playoffs frequently enough ownership is not going to lose any sleep over not winning the cup as long as the team is making money.

  5. 1. Dahlin isn't a bust. He's definitely a #1 defenseman and I'm confident that if the Sabres trade Eichel they can build their team around him. If the Sabres do trade Eichel, they'll need to get a first line forward and some extra pieces for the move to make sense. I mean they've got an elite center who they've had a disagreement with, they've got him under contract I don't really see how it makes sense to trade him. He was an absolute homerun at #2OA, if McDavid hadn't been available that year he would've been the strongest contender for first.

    2. With Elias Pettersson, trading a player that we're in the middle of developing would be incredibly unwise, unless we got a player under contract who is better, cheaper and the same age. Can you name a single player who fits that criteria? No? Well then it's not happening. We're keeping Pettersson and I'm confident our young forwards could at least be a contender to go deep in the playoffs. Our players need to mature and we need to enhance the supporting cast.

    3. Buffalo needs to trade Reinhart but it won't be to us. It'll be one of the other teams in the pacific other than Vegas and us. It could be Seattle, it could Anaheim or it could be Calgary but it won't be here. He makes too much money and we don't have a center or defenseman to spare that would make trading Sam Reinhart to us worth it for Buffalo. Honestly, the Oilers don't have depth to trade for Reinhart although perhaps the Sabres would be interested in Bouchard. Bouchard was supposed to replace Barrie so it doesn't make a ton of sense for Edmonton but they'll have to make some changes after being swept by the Jets.

    4. We're not trading our 2021 1st unless we get some kind of sweetheart deal that will clear Beagle, Roussel and Eriksson off-the-books for next season while still providing us with additional assets. Buying out Eriksson will be inevitable but we might be able to get rid of Beagle and Roussel. Why didn't JB listen to Linden when he told him not to sign these contracts? I mean, by then, the Eriksson contract was an absolute albatross so Benning must've anticipated that those contracts would suck. They could've spent half the money on some fill-in players, which for me would've been Brad Richardson, Drew Stafford or Tobias Rieder who were all available during the 2018 offseason. However after looking over the UFA list of the 2018 offseason I can see why Benning paid so much for Beagle and Roussel. If you look at comparable contracts, Derek Ryan got paid $3.15M x 3, Matt Calvert got paid $2.85M x 3 and the smoking gun: Leo Komarov to the islanders at 3M over 4 years, identical to what Beagle and Roussel got. Komarov would definitely be an upgrade over Beagle as he's good enough to be a 3C or a 3LW but I don't think he's as good in the faceoff circle.

Anyways, I gave this some time hopefully some people will agree with me. Sorry for going off-topic once again folks I just decided to run with it.

If the Canucks win the draft lottery, Owen Powers would fit the bill, or deal the pick to Columbus and add a prospect for Seth Jones. We would need to deal Schmidt, but he doesn't fit well on the Canuck team anyways.

Why would we trade for a player in his prime when we can get a guy on a cheap contract for 3 years saving the team millions of dollars.

Still think Ristolainen should be our target.  Won’t break the bank to acquire, cap is reasonable, has size and offensive ability.  There is something wrong in Buffalo affecting everyone:

    Hughes Hamonic

    Joulevi Ristolainen

    Schmidt Myers

    Rathbone

Forms a pretty uptempo D with Rathbone slotting in for injuries/rest

We'll have to afford ourselves to the possibility that Rathbone is a mainstay. He's shown flashes of brilliance, I think he's a middle-pairing guy like a #4 or a #5 and we've got to give him a chance to shine. Because of that, if Schmidt stays we have to keep him on the right-side. If you look at the compilation of our blueline, that's the way to go.

There is no reason whatsoever to dump Ferland and a trade makes no sense unless it was an expiring contract and a team needed full LTiR to get maximum relief. Adding him doesn't give a team extra cap space.

Buying out LE saves a million, totally pointless, buying out Holtby saves 4 million and LE has the exact same contract as Stall had and it cost a 2nd and LE is only costing a million in real dollars, very moveable now. That's 10 million right there plus Beagle LTIR and I expect Jakes contract to be off the books one way or the other. That's 16 mill of extra cap. Benning knows he's teetering on the edge and if he fails to improve the club and we get off to a bad start he's gone.

Given how badly Benning wanted Reinhart I could see our 1st + in a trade for him

    Nobody will take Eriksson.

So you think that Seattle picks Holtby, pays him $5.7m for most of one year just so they can take the chance of trying to trade him for a 3rd round pick, when they instead could pick a 2nd round power forward prospect that has developed nicely into a potential NHL player.

All that under the backdrop of a league where cap space is the most valuable commodity.

I do understand your thinking but I don’t agree that they select Holtby from VAN. Most likely a cheap guy that has some potential upside.

What other goalie is available? Jack Campbell maybe? Chris Driedger? Florida will have to protect Bobrovsky, who is an absolute scrub. Maybe Florida can compile a package good enough to get that Bobrovsky contract off the books. Tallon put together two really impressive teams in Chicago and Florida, it's a shame he probably won't get another chance.

I wouldn't say it's nuts. None of those players are head and shoulders above Chibrikov, Robertsson, Svechkov, or Chayka and some you listed are probably available still if we trade back into the 15-22 range and pick up a piece we need from a cash strapped team to do so.

I'm not disputing that I just mean people who say we shouldn't pick at all, which is nuts.

  11. signing Sutter for more than one year is insane after the anchor he was for most of his contract.

We can trade Ferland to a team that needs the LTIR space, he's never playing again. Seattle will not pick Gadjovich over Holtby, that's just a waste of a pick when they can probably flip Holtby at the deadline for a 3rd. That's what they'll have to look into the first couple of years even though they're going to come away with a crazy haul with all that cap space. Chicago can't trade Seabrook anymore but they'll still be able to take on a couple of bad, short-term contracts to wrack up the amount of picks they're going to have. Vegas scored Glass, Suzuki and Brannstrom in their first draft. They got their best player, Mark Stone, in a trade which included Brannstrom. Glass is the future of their team right now and they traded Suzuki for Pacioretty, which turned out to be a terrible trade. However, Pacioretty fits in with the age group of the rest of their core.

Ironically, even though Seattle won't be picking a player from Vegas I suspect the two could be good trade partners. Vegas could use some of Seattle's cap space to free them of the Marc-Andre Fleury contract, which would give them an opportunity to add a player like Taylor Hall that fits in the age with their core group. That's the only way I see Vegas making another big run after this year as their team is kind of old. Vegas won't trade Krebs or Glass, that'd be incredibly foolish but they could part with a guy like Hague or their 1st rounder this year.

I wanted to say something else. For everyone here that thinks they've planned who they'll be targeting in 2023, that's nuts, nobody operates that way. How the hell do they know who will be available in two years. Do you know how badly everybody is going to get fleeced by Seattle in this next expansion draft? I mean seriously. Minnesota is set to lose a really good player, so is Tampa quite frankly so are all the deep teams in the NHL. If they pick the right players, they could have a better outlook than us in no time. We're talking about a star player like Wright or Bedard being candidates to play there. and that's AFTER this year's draft and the expansion draft. There's some unbelievable playoff battles coming to the Pacific Northwest, I'll tell you that.

Getting back to the topic of the thread, there's no way we're going to be very good next year. All those terrible contracts with Ferland(even though he's on LTIR forever) and Myers locked up for the considerable future, next year may be a difficult one in Canuck land. Once these contracts go, we'll have more flexibility to make this a competitive team. But we're going to have to bleed for one more year, look how long it took in Edmonton, Colorado, Florida, etc.

  12. For everyone who says we should trade this pick:

You're nuts. We need this pick SO badly after trading our 2020 1st.

Kent Johnson, Brandt Clarke, Carson Lambos, Corson Ceulemans or Cole Sillinger would all be fine picks. Johnson and Clarke are the two that I'd really be enthusiastic about and then we can pick another defender in the second round. If Benning is as good in this draft as he's been previously, we'll pick at least 2 NHL players this year. The fact that he can deliver this is very important and is probably the reason why ownership decided to keep him for one more year.

    Not great?

No, our drafting has been great. You lack perspective on the odds of draft picks making the NHL if you think our drafting has only been “good”.

I thought I was pretty complimentary. I think you're just trying to pick a fight.

What about when JB picked Juolevi over Tkachuk/Sergachev/Keller/Chychrun or when he picked Virtanen over Ehlers/Tkachuk/Sanheim/Fiala/Larkin?

I'll give him a pass for 2016 because that was a historically thin draft. But 2014? It was his first year, he'd been studying this group of players for the whole year with the Bruins and by all accounts he was looking to move up to #1, probably to pick Ekblad. Florida asked for Horvat + 6 for +1, which Benning refused. Obviously, Benning was right to refuse that trade we'd be setback majorly by a move like that.

That's what I mean by good, not great. If he was great, he would've nailed those picks like Yzerman/Sakic. Virtanen will be out of the league soon and Juolevi is probably a #4 or #5 guy, hopefully he can be a #3. If he turns out to be a #3, I'll revise my statement and say it was a decent pick. But Virtanen? I mean he never had the hockey sense but he was a solid hitter and he skated well. I remember seeing Brian Burke on Sportsnet talking about how the first thing you do when drafting a player is evaluating his skater, then his hockey sense. As you may know, size doesn't matter as much as it used to. Our team could really use a top six forward like Tkachuk or Ehlers. In fact, we would've been a playoff contender this year with one of those guys.

Gorton maybe, but Davidson never he's a very patriotic American he's not going to come and work for a Canadian team unless they give him a truckload full of cash. And if he did come to Canada, it would be for a team like Toronto since they're basically America's team as it is.

  15. Columbus would do well getting some young pieces to build around. They should trade everybody and rebuild since they don't have enough depth to build a winner with this group. They're good in goal, they've got some young defensemen in Jones and Werenski but their forwards are terrible. At the top end they've got Roslovic, Laine, Domi, Bjorkstrand and Atkinson. Columbus, IMO, would be an ideal landing spot for some of the young forwards that will be available in the next three drafts.

If they trade Patrik Laine, who will they get in return? Who would be interested? Carolina? Montreal? Los Angeles? Buffalo? Does it make sense to trade a guy you just acquired, especially when it's a star this prominent? Lots of question marks for Columbus.

I just took a look at those drafts and who I would've taken and I think Benning did as well as you would expect. He's the expert. You wouldn't tell educate a doctor about medicine just like you don't try to educate a hockey executive about drafting. Even Mike Gillis knows more about the work required at the draft table than I do.

Massive upgrade on coaching. THAT one is worth it.

I think we'd have another down year next year and then with all the bad contracts coming off the books (everybody but Ferland and Myers) we'd be in good position with our young players and an experienced coach to lead us to a top 3 seed in the Pacific in 2023. Hopefully the divisions return to normal though as we'll have a hard time getting past McDavid, Tavares, Matthews, Suzuki, Monahan, Gaudreau, Marner, Stutzle, M. Tkachuk, B. Tkachuk and others.
