Pearson + a pick for Kessel 50% off is pretty much a wash

    JT - Pettersson - Boeser

    Podz - Horvat - Garland

    Hoggie - Dickinson - Kessel

Looks pretty solid to me. If it came down to it, having Kessel in top-6 or 9 in the playoffs is a pretty solid offensive upgrade from Pearson. Also two pretty great PP units.

Kessel on the third line and Pearson off the team? After we extended him recently?

  2. I'm surprised there's not more interest in Kessel. I've always been a fan.

Here in Vancouver? It wouldn't work. We don't have any bad contracts for the 'Yotes to swallow unless the Coyotes have any interest in taking Tyler Myers. Of course, if we lose Myers, we'd have to replace him. Ferland doesn't work because of the LTIR thing. Let's say it did work, where does Kessel play? We've got Boeser, Garland and Podkolzin on RW. No need for Kessel, even though he could score 30 goals with Horvat/Pettersson/Miller

Who would take Kessel? Chicago? the Rangers? Panthers? What about Vegas? I just don't see a fit. Toronto would be a fit if they weren't retaining his salary. Pittsburgh would be a fit if Malkin didn't hate Kessel. The Oilers would be a fit but they've just committed to Hyman. Kessel is still a very good player and he'll get a contract after next year, but trading him will be tough.

To me the thing with the kings young guns, Is that they are over hyped without any of them stepping foot in the nhl and proving anything yet. Fans and insiders are assuming most these kids are going to be hits that will not only take over these slowly dwindling stars, But put them back in cup contention. Meanwhile on the flip side of things WE can have proven young elite talent at every major positions PLUS proven young depth that could easy blossom into more, With literally only 1 potential iffy contract in the future ( OEL ) Yet the same people who praise the kings for what they are doing shame us.

Kings are still in a far better position vs the rest of our division not including vegas ( only short term, they will fall soon if they don't start drafting well ) and us.

Agree with you on the point about Vegas. They're bound to fall back to Earth unless Patrick comes in and scores 50 points.

With the Kings' young guns, they've got Vilardi and Kupari who have looked good so far and Byfield who has continued to improve. The young guns will be good.

All this talk about the kings being on the rise... Cruising cap friendly and i got to say, This team has allocated its cap horribly. You think torontos 4 for 40 is bad, Look at what 7 for 50+ gets you on the kings roster.
    34 yo Kopitar - 10m
    31 yo Poughty - 11m
    36 yo Brown - 5.9m
    35 yo Quick - 5.8m
    35 yo Edler - 3.5m
    " i'm a top 6 but i cant score " Danault - 5.5m
    Peterson - 5m
And nearly 5m in dead cap.

Yet somehow many people seem to think we will be bottom of the league and the freaking kings are on the rise. Neat isn't it

Kopitar, Doughty and Edler are all worthwhile. They're playing for the Kings in order to provide the support for the young players the Kings have drafted. They're set at center and they've got Brandt Clarke coming up, who will replace Doughty eventually. Byfield and Turcotte are great players and if you trade one of those bad contracts (Brown or Quick) to Buffalo along with Turcotte and some picks for Eichel, you've got a team on the rise. Fortunately for Los Angeles, all they really have to do is develop Byfield, who looks like a solid top line center and they're good to go. They don't need Eichel. They've got guys like Kaliyev and Fagemo on the wings, if there is a position on the Kings that needs filling it's absolutely on the wing.

The Kings won two Stanley Cups before they gave out those contracts and they did it 1) to reward the players for winning and 2) to usher in some youth once the team got better. Guess what? That's exactly Benning's plan here in Vancouver. Remember when the Kings got Richards and Carter? Getting Garland and OEL this summer was just as big a move. But one day, when the Twins are running the show, they'll have to do what LA is doing right now. They'll have to pay guys on their second big contract, guys like Pettersson, Hughes and Boeser to keep them around to tutor the youth that will inevitably replace them. That's why we kept the Sedins, Edler, Tanev, Burrows, Bieksa, Hamhuis and others for such an extended period of time. That's exactly how you build to win, that's how they've done it in Dallas, Boston, Tampa, in St. Louis, in Los Angeles and when Bo Horvat gets called up to accept the Stanley Cup, it'll be our turn.

    That's my $0.02

Columbus is in a terrible situation right now and so they need to overpay players on both term and money in order to retain and build a core.

Man, Columbus situation is not that bad. San Jose, Buffalo and Arizona are all far worse.

Overpaid? What? Merzlikins? He's good man. If I'm the GM there, sure, I blow up the team but they've got Laine, Werenski, Boqvist, draft picks, Sillinger, Ceulemans, Johnson, Foudy, Texier, Bean and the two goalies. If they do well in free agency, especially next year with some really elite guys available, there's some potential. Plus there's teams that are going to look to unload some assets. Eichel in Buffalo. Schmaltz in Arizona. Monahan and Gaudreau in Calgary. And to some, even Larkin and Bertuzzi in Detroit. They've got picks, they've got prospects and if someone good enough comes available and the price is right, it's the way to go.

Yeah but #1RD is probably going to help them more than a 100pt center who doesn't bring it on both ends of the ice especially since they already have a 150 pt scoring center (McDavid was projected to score 153 points in a full season).

Nurse-Fox pairing will eat up 30+ minutes in the playoffs.

If Klefbom ever returns to health and/or Bouchard and Broberg develops well, they will a top 4D that can contend.

Getting scoring help and bottom 6 depth up front is relatively easier than getting a #1RD who already has a Norris under his belt.

Draisaitl and McDavid are like Jordan and Pippen. You don't split them up unless they have to. They'e got Yamamoto, RNH, Puljujarvi and Foegele, they're a good young team and they've got Evan Bouchard, who could be just as good as Adam Fox. This thread is bunk.

    • Haha 1
  7. You're undervaluing Stutzle and Tkachuk.

Brady is a premier power-forward in the NHL, you'd have to think he's worth more than what the Bruins got for Lucic in that trade with the Kings. Then there's Stutzle, who was a 3OV pick. Seriously, that &^@#ing guy is going to be just as good as Pettersson too. Hoglander looks like a strong top four forward, I know people don't say "top four" usually when it comes to forwards but that's how all the good teams are built.

Look at Colorado with MacKinnon, Rantanen, Kadri and Burakovsky, with Makar also contributing on the offense. There's Tampa Bay, who just lost a key guy in Johnson but they've still got a good top four of Point, Cirelli, Stamkos and Kucherov, with honorable mention going to Palat, who they will lose next summer.

Now look at our team: We've got Pettersson, Boeser, Horvat/Miller and Garland/Hoglander with a plethora of youth coming in. The defense will have a new identity with Hughes slotting down to the second pairing. They're relying on a guy who could be past his prime, it's a gamble, but you need to build around the core instead of trading everybody just because it worked in a video game. OEL is the best answer that we could find to this teams woes. What are we gonna do? Sign Chara to play with Hughes?

I really would like to see a PTO go to a guy that can provide center depth, especially to our bottom 6. I don't want to see Miller dragged into a 3C role, his 1LW role is too important to our success. Galchenyuk, Staal and Zajac are the 3 available UFAs with name recognition. I think Zajac is the better of the 3, from last season:

    Center PTOs.JPG

Galchenyuk is good too. I've always thought he was a good player.

Zajac is too old for our team and Staal has declined too quickly. All good points, but I take Chucky over Zajac. In this league it's all about youth and potential and I still see Galchenyuk as a top nine forward, a potential option down the middle if there's an injury, that kind of stuff. Sutter's definitely a better option as a 4C, but Chucky could probably displace Highmore in some games.

Then there's that bit about Jankowski being the "steal of the 2012 draft", which somebody mentioned. Seriously, I don't see how that's they could've seen that in him. Did they not see the league he was playing in?

Because he wants to win a Cup.  Barrie is absolute garbage in his own zone and frankly doesn't belong in the NHL, along with most of their other pylons.  McDiver will never win a Cup in that dump of a city.

What are you talking about? I don't think most players care that much about winning a cup. I'm not saying they don't care at all, all I'm saying is that they probably care about the money more. I mean, so that they can feed their kid. "McDiver" will stay in Edmonton as long is the team is respectable and as long as he gets paid.

  10. 4 minutes ago, King Heffy said:

You do if he demands a trade to an NHL team.

Why would he do that? He's rich beyond his wildest dreams, he's a star and they've even brought in Kassian and paid him $3.25M just to protect McDavid. You're out to lunch if you don't think they'd move heaven and earth to keep him. Draisaitl is also a star, they only trade him if he affects their ability to keep McDavid. Those two are like Jordan and Pippen and if we want to beat the Oilers we have to beat them with our depth.

Pettersson isn't in the same tier as McDavid. In fact, he isn't as good as Draisaitl either. It's not close either. However, our 2C in Bo Horvat is probably a lot better than Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Our 1RW in Boeser is probably better than Yamamoto. Our 3C, Dickinson is light years ahead of Turris and it's not even close. Than you look at our D and our goalies. They don't have an answer for Demko. Nurse matches up well with OEL. That bottom pairing with Myers and one of Rathbone or Juolevi is a lot better than Kris Russell or Slater Koekkoek.

Plus, do they have an answer for Quinn Hughes? They do, it's Tyson Barrie and Quinn will totally blow him out of the water when it comes down to it. Also, there's Tucker Poolman, who I think will be a wildcard for our team. He's a Tanev replacement and I think he's good enough to play with Hughes or OEL. Our right-side is definitely a matter of concern, but I think we'll draft a guy in the next couple of years that'll help remedy that problem.

    Oilers say no.

Draisitl's on a great contract and Nurse is the heart and soul of their blueline.

If anything, they need to deal McDavid and get that massive contract off the books.

The return would be massive and set up the Oilers to be an annual contender for years to come.

You don't trade a player like McDavid. He's a future Hall-of-famer it's only a matter of time. He could win the cup which would be great but if he doesn't, he'll still be remembered as one of the best. He's like a modern Pavel Bure.

Murphy-Garland straight up deal? Who’s does it?

Garland is great for scoring depth.

Let's say he puts up 55-65 pts, we're in good shape. We've got another 60 point guy in Horvat, we've got Pettersson, Boeser and Miller who are PPG players, we've got Dickinson, Pearson, Podkolzin and Hoglander who could score between 30pts to 55 pts each.

If we've got a trade chip, I'd say Olli Juolevi is the guy we shop. He's got to be worth a 2nd round pick at this point, there's teams that need a good, young shutdown defenseman and if Jack Rathbone comes in a lights it up, Juolevi could bring in another scorer, preferably a center to really make us a strong cup contender. I don't think folks realize how much better the team has gotten.

  13. Imagine if Montreal had Tkachuk or Hughes instead of KK.

Tkachuk is one of Ottawa's best players and Hughes is our most promising defender.

i've got to say though, that 2018 draft was awfully thin. Carolina vastly overpaid for Kotkaniemi, possibly by double and Montreal was right to cut him loose. Let's see how this works out.

Wow Arizona will have 14 picks in the 1st 2 rounds over the next 3 years.  They will have over $52 million in cap space next year.  And Matthews will join them in 3 years.  They are basically the equivalent of an expansion team right now...

They should keep Keller and Chychrun, but if I could get something for Schmaltz from a desperate team I'd consider it. The Coyotes are completely blowing it up and rebuilding, they'll need to make some FA acquisitions throughout their rebuild to get better.

Overrated player. Wonder what the AAV is.

I find it weird that Detroit seems to bridge every player they have.

Detroit's rebuild isn't even close to being over. They need a star to build around even though they have Raymond, like Shane Wright, Brad Lambert potentially and especially Conor Geekie, who is a big power center that would be good as a first or second line center. They'll probably continue to trade some guys for picks, especially next season. Larkin, Zadina, Bertuzzi, Vrana, Seider, Cossa, Edvinsson and Berggren, I mean that's a great team. Imagine if they get Bedard? In 2023, I doubt they'll be bad enough to get him. Shane Wright probably goes to the Coyotes or the Sabres.
