  1. Eichel to Los Angeles would be an interesting move

if I'm Blake, I'm willing to give up Turcotte and this year's first but only if I can dump a bad contract like Quick or Brown. That might be a tough pill to swallow for Los Angeles' fans, who want to see another cup win with this core. I think Doughty and Kopitar are up for it but Brown and Quick are at the end of the line. If Los Angeles needs to pick between Jones and Eichel, you go with Eichel as he's younger, he's under contract long-term and he's got star power. Eichel pushes Kopitar down to a more manageable role on the second line where he can utilize his defensive talents, presumably playing with Viktor Arvidsson, to form a secondary shut-down line. To play with Eichel, I'd start Byfield either as a 3C or on Eichel's wing with the goal of Byfield being Kopitar's long-term replacement. To flank that Eichel and Byfield unit, where they hopefully form chemistry as former second overall picks, I think Athanasiou's experience playing with McDavid and Larkin make him a good candidate to generate speed and chances for two young stars. Byfield becomes Los Angeles' version of Leon Draisaitl, Turcotte gets his shot to be a 1C in Buffalo and Jack Eichel takes off going head-to-head against Connor McDavid.

  2. He would've made a fine goaltender whether it would've been in the NHL as a backup or in the KHL or SHL.

I can't believe this, truly. This guy was around my age and all he was doing was fleeing an emergency. You're partying with friends, enjoying your summer away from work and all of a sudden BANG you hit your head and that's it.

RIP Kivi, may your soul rest in peace forever and ever.

  3. Olli Juolevi for Mason Appleton +

Jets get a 3LD, we get a 3C. They were going to lose Appleton anyway, now we get him to hopefully fill a roll for us. Juolevi helps fill out their D and we get an additional pick/prospect to even it out given that Juolevi was a top pick 5 years ago.

Sounds like an apprenticeship for an eventual promotion as they learn the ropes. The first co-GMs of the NHL in the future?

Brett Huil and Les Jackson served as Co-GMs of the Dallas Stars and it was disaster that culminated in Sean Avery being signed for 4 years @ $3.5 million AAV and eventually being claimed off waivers by the New York Rangers.

I don't think Co-Gm's work, maybe one twin as GM and the other as President and they both go down when the team starts to suck again. Look at Stevie Yzerman, he spent 4 years as the AGM in Detroit before moving onto Tampa. With the Sedins, I don't think they go to another team just to have a practice job. When Yzerman moved on to Tampa, that job in Detroit firmly belong to Ken Holland. So let's say the Canucks fire Benning at the end of next year, do they immediately promote the Sedins or do they go with someone else for 3-7 years and THEN let the Sedins to rise up when that guy is done, maybe one as President and one as GM.

It would be a really unique power structure to have these two bouncing ideas off each other, especially if they brought in a more experience executive like Dean Lombardi to consult with them. Would the team really be worse off in the hands of two hockey guys like the Sedins and some lawyer like AGM Chris Gear or in the hands  of Benning? After he coughed up all that money on Roussel, Beagle, Ferland, Myers, Eriksson, Baertschi, Sutter I mean really when is it ever going to end? Sutter could've brought back some picks at the deadline if he were on a better deal and we traded Bonino for him, who was clearly the far better player. Than there's Baertschi, who was basically terrible for his entire bloated contract and basically played like he should be making league minimum.  They traded a 2nd rounder, who turned out to be Rasmus Andersson in exchange for this guy. WTH? Than there's Linden Vey and although his contract didn't suck he was a depth guy at best. They traded ANOTHER 2nd rounder for this guy? We could've gotten Donato, Montour or Christian Dvorak with that pick. All of a sudden we've got a top four defenseman and a top nine forward if Benning didn't waste assets on two depth guys when he could've filled the holes with UFAs.

Honestly, this whole philosophy around firing and hiring GMs, in my opinion, is simply for optics based purposes. GMs know they'll be fired one day and the owners know they'll do the firing. It works the same way with coaches, managers and players alike. But it doesn't work that way for the owners. The GMs job is to speak to the media and take the heat for hockey related decisions. I know I just spent an entire paragraph deriding Benning's moves but I recall what occurred at the times these moves were made and they made sense. The Kesler trade? Backed against the wall. The Myers deal? Nobody else was good enough to warrant spending the money and we didn't have the assets to trade for someone. Roussel? We needed grit and we needed to fill roster spots. Ditto for Beagle. For both Roussel and Beagle, there was not a single player available that was good enough to fill the roster spots as well as both Beagle and Roussel appeared they were capable of. Eriksson was signed to get one last hurrah out the Sedins, that signing was terrible and indefensible. That summer was terrible for a lot of teams, I think Backes, Okposo and maybe a few others that I could find all during that summer. Than there's Ferland, I thought it was a great signing and at his best he's a top nine forward in the ilk of a guy like Pearson. Not bad at $3.5 Million, but it looks terrible now and he had concussion problems.

Bottom line: I'll hold my judgement until the Twins prove they've got the chops as managers like Sakic or they'll go out as a dud like Nieuwendyk or Patrick Roy in Colorado. It really depends.

  5. Lou helped bring the Islanders from the dead.

Bergevin fleeced Vegas, Nashville and Chicago, made some great free agent signings, got something back for Galchenyuk, I mean there's a reason why this guy has lasted so long in that pressure cooker in Montreal. The Edmundson, Toffoli and Petry acquisitions provide a solid supporting cast for those three youngsters Romanov, Suzuki and Kotkaniemi with honorable mention going to Cole Caufield. His only major blunder has been the Sergachev trade and at least there he brought back a potential superstar that didn't pan out to be as talented as projected.

Than there's Zito, who got that stud in Bennett and may even be able to bring in Patrik Laine no one knows yet. I know Zito has to make a big move, I don't think he's GM of the year I think it has to go to Bergevin.

Of  course you do not do it, if you do not see improvement or do not consider the Canucks improving, but Jim has said he want to be aggressive in trade and UFA, to me this implies that we will bounce back, something I agree with. IMO, we will have one more piece in Podkolzin, to help us there, and even though Schmidt is good, we absolutely need to go after a defensive player to go with Hughes. We can't unless we move some cap. Schmidt does this. Again, if you do not think we are improving...of course you don't trade opportunity at Bedard.

We are already paying for Holtby, at near 5 million, if we can lose him, and pick up Jones, and the picks that is a total win, after all you just pointed out we are in cap hell. Not that I think we are, but your words................

Thirdly..........what you paid for something has absolutely no bearing on what you sell it for................Imagine buying a house in Vancouver in the 50's for 10 grand, and someone saying...no you can't sell it for 1.5 million now, because , you know...you only paid 10 grand.................I am not even sure why I answered that one, but someone needs to help you.............:picard:

Imagine if Burke would have came to you with his scheme to get both Sedin's...........imagine your response after hearing how it would happen'

First, I am going to black mail Atlanta, and then trade McCabe, then this and then that, and Wa La! Everyone of these moves are within the realm of possible, you need to open your imagination and think outside the box.......Burke did.....I am getting that you thought that impossible

Imagine Brad Park and Jean Ratelle for Vadnais and Phil Esposito, this is a trade that moved 2 #1 centers and 2 #2 Dmen...........imagine that.......big box thinking!

What? We're not talking about price inflation here.

Braden Holtby could be better next year. If Demko goes down early and Holtby picks up the slack, we could get a 2nd for him at the deadline. By then, to a contending team in need of a cup-winning goalie, he'd be an attractive fit. If he isn't good next year he should expect to get a bad contract. To me, Holtby's contract should be about where Sergei Bobrovsky should be getting paid.

The 1999 draft was a much more multi-faceted thing than "blackmailing" Atlanta, which wasn't even the major trade that led to the acquisition. The first part was being in the right place at the right time and getting 3rd overall in the lottery. Than, acquiring fourth overall from Chicago cost a top pairing defenseman in McCabe and a first round pick, Pavel Vorobiev. That might not look like a lot, but McCabe had a ton of potential after we brought him in for the Trevor Linden deal, which was executed by Keenan. You see what I mean? Some of the circumstances Burke had to acquire the Sedins were already in place before he even took over. That draft was a fluke, no GM will ever be able to pull off a heist like that again. He almost got Stefan along with the Sedins, that's something not a lot of people know.

That second trade you cited is ancient. The NHL doesn't work like that anymore and teams grow their talent at home, there's usually little need to make trades other than for cap reasons and for draft reasons. Not a lot of hockey deals these days except maybe Laine and Roslovic for Dubois, which turned out to be a great deal for Columbus at least on the Roslovic front who has obviously emerged as a top six forward. Laine sucks right now but with a new coach who knows.

  7. Trade #1

Why would we trade our chance at Connor Bedard in two years so we can poach one of Columbus' 1sts now? That doesn't make any sense. First of all, we'll need our first by then. You need as many picks as you can so you can bring in players that soften the need to rebuild. Take a look at Tampa. Drafting all these young guys who replaced the players they already had. If Benning is such a good evaluator of talent, why trade future picks for current picks? Let him use the picks we already have and let's wait until 2023 to use that pick.

    Trade #2

We're already in cap hell. Plus, San Jose has a huge shortage of prospects. This trade makes no sense for either team. And if Jones sucks we just buy him out? You do realize that every dollar counts. You trade for Jones, you're impeding our ability to competitive for the next three seasons. Benning knows this, so do our owners and they won't do it. Maybe when we were rebuilding it would've made sense to use the Eriksson money to take a bad contract to gain additional picks, but it makes absolutely no sense now. We're trying to compete.

    Trade #3

So Ottawa sees that we traded a 3rd for Schmidt last year right? And he didn't improve at all this year. Why would Ottawa take him and then pay us to take him? Vegas traded Schmidt to the Canadian division so they wouldn't have to play against him. If they wanted to trade him to Ottawa, they could've and Ottawa would've paid what we did forget the two 2nds.

It might make sense to trade Schmidt at TDL next year, but that's only if we have another bad year and Juolevi proves himself valuable. Trading Schmidt would be a massive change in direction for our organization and if we're clearing cap space I'm afraid we're going to have to use buyouts. We don't have any other options, nobody is going to take the four deuces in Eriksson, Roussel, Virtanen and Beagle. Either we swallow their bad contracts for another year and clean house at the end of next season or we buy them out and use the money to bring in better replacements. So then we're swallowing probably at least $2 Million for the 2022-2023 season after buying out Eriksson, Virtanen and Roussel and placing Beagle on the LTIR.

To think that Heiskanen, Makar and Petey went just after him... yikes Philly

The plan in Philadelphia was to use one of Frost or Patrick to replace Giroux long term. Of course, Pettersson would be completely capable of doing that and Heiskanen would really shore up their defense but that was the plan. Clearly it failed, so Philly has to find a way to cut their losses and get something useful, like a top nine forward, backup goalie or top four defenseman so they can enhance their team. Frost could still be good enough to be a top six forward but he won't replace Giroux. Frost has had great success in the AHL, so I wouldn't put it past him to push his way into the league as a 2C or a RW. He won't replace Giroux though or at least I doubt it.

LA could very well benefit here, and leave Seattle with scraps from Tampa.

Who would the Kings want off Tampa? Cirell, Sergachev, Cernak, Kucherov, Stamkos, Point and Hedman are all untouchables. It might make sense to unload Ryan McDonagh to the Seattle Kraken and get Gourde and Johnson onto the Kings giving LAK two top six forwards at a reasonable cap hit. Tampa will protect Sergachev, Cernak and Hedman on the back end and will probably lose someone good in the expansion draft. After trading Gourde, Johnson and McDonagh they become cap compliant and can use the assets acquired from the Kings to fill in the roster holes that are left. Cal Foote will be promoted(if he isn't claimed) as will Barre-Boulet, Raddysh, Katchouk and Morand while the Tampa Bay Lightning try to milk another cup run out of this core.

  10. Seth Jones would be a SPECTACULAR fit with Toronto, possibly in exchange for William Nylander. Obviously, Toronto would have to replace Nylander's offence but they've got prospects and picks they can move to fill in some holes. Muzzin goes with Rielly, Brodie goes with Jones and the Maple Leafs trade Liljegren, who will be made expendable by the acquisition of Jones and will bring in a top nine forward. Then they bring in a UFA, call up Robertson and keeping Foligno for next season on a discounted rate.

Toronto has the offensive tools with Tavares, Matthews and Marner and I think some of that forward money needs to be re-allocated if they want to win. Another fit for Seth Jones would be the New Jersey Devils. New Jersey is awash with forward prospects, and the strength they've shored up down the middle along with their wealth in picks could make them an attractive destination for Jones. The final spot would be the New York Rangers, although I don't think they have the depth down the middle to fill Columbus' organizational needs.

Essentially, Columbus will trade Jones and they'll have to build around Laine, Roslovic, Werenski and Korpisalo. I think they're better off stripping the team down and starting from scratch and going after a young star that will take them to the next level. I think Davidson can fix some of the problems going on in Columbus but after getting gutted by losing Panarin, Duchene, Bobrovsky and Dzingel they just don't have the horses. Time to rebuild the rebuild I guess.

Imagine if we had not signed Holtby?

    He would have been available.

AHL champion & well developed, great results in minors at time of waivers.

I guess opposing teams said that about Markstrom 4 years ago.

We don't need another goalie controversy like we had with Luongo/Schneider for like 3 years. There's a reason why Ned went unclaimed and now he's Carolina's undisputed starter. Edmonton, Buffalo, Ottawa, Los Angeles, etc. all would've benefited from claiming him. Such a shame for them.

Button has Vancouver picking up Kent Johnston. North Van kid. Centre, point a game at University of Michigan. My only concern is even though he's 6'1", he's only 165 lbs.

Would Aatu Raty be a too off the board pick?

    https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/521697/kent-johnson

I agree that Raty might be a good off-the-board pick. Before this season, he was the projected first overall pick this year. There's a lot of talent there and his floor is as a 3C, but he could project higher depending on who develops him which is equally important as drafting. It doesn't look like Benning will trade down, which could be an awesome with either Columbus or Minnesota who both have two late firsts. I mean, if we traded #9 to either one of those teams and got their two later picks it might be a beneficial move. We get two lesser prospects: a defenseman and a forward instead of just one player. That's not what Benning will do but I can see how he'd be ok with doing that. Sure, he's going to go with quality over quantity here but a move like that would make sense and that's all I'm saying.

Next year, we've got a few players that we could move at the deadline in Holtby and Motte, but we've also got a tremendous lack of depth and with Benning at helm for seven years something has got to give. Benning has had some bad luck with the draft lottery, if he did we would've landed Jack Hughes in 2019, Ehlers, Nylander or Fiala in 2014 and Tkachuk in 2016. One of those five forwards would've made a huge difference this year. I'm confident if we bring in two more core players and a good supporting cast we can be on top like we were ten years ago.

    That's my $0.02 for today

  13. 5 minutes ago, Phil_314 said:

I kind of see where OP is coming from, Lindholm plays a cerebral kind of game that would complement Hughes and Rathbone (since they project more as Torey Krug type puck movers) and could pair well with Schmidt on a shutdown duo.  Schmidt's dual sidedness helps in this case, but my problem with it is the timing and context of his acquisition (via trade, when he could be signed in a couple months potentially) and the fit (possibly better to get more physicality).  For his role, I think handedness in this case would be a secondary issue.

Hughes is comparable to Morgan Rielly or maybe even Brian Leetch

Rathbone, on the other hand, reminds me of Krug. You're correct about that. For the right side, we've got Schmidt who should play on the first pairing and we've got Myers, who is a #4 or #5 kind of defender. That's where he's at his best, like he was in Winnipeg. Hamonic should be a great discount to play with Hughes, I feel like that'll be a better pairing for next year. Then we've got the third pairing which will include either Jack Rathbone or Olli Juolevi. So, for the first pairing we either bring in a LHD like Lindholm or OEL, although OEL would be a huge mistake. Or we bring in a RHD like Niklas Hjalmarsson, who I think would be a great fit here.

  14. We need to get a top pairing guy and a top six forward to be competitive again. I don't see that happening without building through the draft.

If we're trading a defenseman, it's not going to be Rathbone or Schmidt it'll be Juolevi who would benefit from a change of scenery. Rathbone, although undersized, has a lot of potential and it would be a blunder to trade him so soon.

If we trade Juolevi + 1st for a top pairing guy, then what the hell are we trading to upgrade our 3C and LW positions. We wouldn't have anything left that's tradeable save for Virtanen or Holtby, at least one of whom will be bought out. If we keep Holtby, he'd better have a bounce back year I don't think our core is old enough yet to make the next jump. We need one of the young forwards from the next two drafts, defensive help and some complimentary players.

To answer your question, no, Schmidt is not on the move. Not at all.

  15. Wasting three pieces like this in Lind, Juolevi and the 2021 #9OA would be a huge mistake. Keep in mind Bo Horvat was picked at #9OA 8 years ago. Can you imagine if we just traded away Horvat to get a 29-year old defenseman? Wouldn't everyone complain about it on here forever? I'm talking about a top six forward, a top four defenseman and possibly a starting goalie. Frankly, I think Gibson Homer in the 2022 draft is a better fit for our team than Wallstedt. I think it would be more logical to lean into Demko, get him a veteran backup for next season and pick a skater in this years' draft. I think with Dipietro and Silovs in the system, we don't need to draft another goalie in the first round.

Mason McTavish, Dylan Guenther, Simon Edvinsson, Brandt Clarke, Cole Sillinger and Kent Johnson are all fine future NHL players that could step onto our team next year or in 2022. We're about to turn a corner and we would've had a much better season if we'd kept Toffoli, who I think is on a fantastic contract at that cap hit. If we have never signed Eriksson, we'd be able to keep Toffoli and it would've had a huge butterfly effect on the rest team. We need to bring in young players that can play their roles and we're in need of another scorer. One of those forwards is probably capable of replacing Toffoli's production over the next few years. By then, Hughes, Pettersson and Boeser will be entering their prime while Podkolzin(top 9 forward), Hoglander(top six forward), Woo,(middle pairing defenseman), Lockwood(who will be in our bottom six in the future), DiPietro (mediocre starting goaltender /dependable backup), Juolevi (middle pairing defenseman), Lind (top 9 forward) and Rathbone (top four defenseman) will have proven themselves as NHL players.

Next season, we're going to experience an influx of young players. We've got a young coach who has worked with developing Canucks' prospects in the past. We've got a solid cavalry of guys mentioned above and they''ll be complimented by the 3-5 successful picks that Benning will make over the next two drafts. This team will have to eat two bad contracts after next season with Ferland and Myers, but we've got a promising future. Don't make a trade like this JB, stay the course until we're ready to take the next step. This is a young team.
