  1. Really Canada???  Why do I get the feeling that the state government in California is next with this ridiculousness...

Service Canada employees who interact with the public are being asked to stay away from terms like Mr., Mrs., father and mother, and to use gender-neutral terms in their place, CBC News has learned.

@Tystick I don't think anyone is throwing out the concept of male and female, mother and father, etc. thats just the spin that creates the media fury. Its also a new area of study so I do think as time rolls on here we'll see more studies on the nature of it and the kind of data your looking for will be better developed.

My issue with this whole thing is its a good example of how a minor thing gets blown up politically into something its not. So 1/2% of people going to a Service Canada office get addressed in the way they prefer - is that really something to light your hair on fire over? Is it really the end of traditional families? I can't see how but thats where this seems to go. I think there are much bigger issues but for some reason the gender thing really seems to get people going.

@Jimmy McGill - I think the gender thing gets people going because advocates for changing gender identification often conflate it with changing sexual identification.

For example, birth certificates were not designed to identify your birth gender. They were designed to indicate what sex you were born. Were you born male or female. Same thing with the passport - what sex are you. Male or female.

Yet somehow we've got to a place where we're now introducing "X" for one simple fact - so that people's feelings don't get hurt. And in the case of birth certificates, its not even the feelings of the person themselves, but the parents that are now implementing THEIR beliefs on the child about gender identification. EVEN THOUGH THE CERTIFICATE WAS DESIGNED TO STATE THE CHILD'S SEX.

Is it the end of the world? No. But I'd certainly argue that its the beginning of a slippery slope. We've seen these things changing quite quickly and its only getting faster and more drastic.

I agree with @Tystick when he says that some of these things are about scientifically identifiable markers - not the feelings of the individual.

@Fateless well... it makes for interesting conversation anyway

I don't know how you reconcile something like the concept of gender fluidity with something like the basic facts on a birth certificate and have everyone come out happy with the result. Maybe two lines? one for birth sex, one for gender that you pick?
