  1. Who is good at breaking down stats?  One thing Id like to see is goals scored relative to the context of the game i.e game winners are obviously very important goals vs scoring a goal in 1-4 loss or scoring the fifth goal in a 5-2 win.  Im curious how Boeser’s goal scoring breaks down in this context.

This touches on the idea I've had for a long time to find a better stat than game-winning goals. Due to how it is measured, often the goals aren't even scored at crucial moments. A team giving up a 4-0 lead to win 4-3 would have the GWG to the fourth goal-scorer, but it would be unreasonable to conclude that this player is a "clutch" player. He scored the goal to go from 3-0 to 4-0, which is not nearly the same as a goal to go from 3-3 to 4-3, yet both are recorded as the same.

You could definitely manually track some of this, but it could be incredibly labourious.

But yeah, I too would be really interested in which guys score when their team is down in the game or which guys score to pull their team ahead in the game.

NHL.com has stats like this for teams as a whole (wins when losing after 2 periods, etc.), but not for individuals.

Hockey Reference allows you to look at player stats by 1) Even strength 2) Power Play 3) Short Handed 4) 5 on 5 5) 5 on 5 Close 6) 5 on 5 Tied.

Seems to me that you may want to look at the last two to see how a player is contributing when the game is close or in doubt. Boeser had 27 of his 46 points in the final 2 categories or 58.6%. By comparison, Horvat was 55.7%, Pettersson was 39.7%

Actual points in those situations had Horvat at 29, Boeser 27 and Pettersson 27.

I am pretty hard at times on my assessment of Brock. One thing I will give him is to my eye without going back and watching the games. Many of his goals do come at important times of the game. I would assess him a clutch goal scorer.

Given the frequency he does contribute in this regard. I don't think he does enough else to warrant a contract above 5m regardless of if were talking about 2019, 2020, 2021 or 2022 Brock. I think we've established a baseline for his play.
