I expect him to get claimed again. Surprised that the Kraken didn't hold onto him longer. He's been a hyped up part of the Lightning's system for awhile now. Don't expect the Lightning to get him back yet.

Doubt Petan gets claimed. Good local kid, should be up and down between Van and Abby this season. There isn't really a spot for him when the team is healthy, especially in the Top 6. Dowling is a better bottom six option than Petan. Will be curious who gets waived once Motte returns.

He hasn't been the same since his injuries.

I feel like Arizona is about to extract a 2nd rounder for the Shaw contract.... Shaw's deal expires this year and nobody is expecting the Coyotes to get to the upper echelon's of the cap this season. Could be a win/win. Buffalo and Anaheim could also be landing spots if they can get picks out of Chicago.

I will not be surprised if the Flyers re-waive MacEwen sometime later this season and the Canucks re-acquire him and have him go to Abby. That scenario seems likely to me.

Yes, Jim Benning is good at drafting. The fact that the Canucks have 2 defensemen, 1 goalie (will be both goalies next season), and six forwards in the lineup that were either drafted or homegrown (I counted Zack MacEwen as the sixth since we signed him as an undrafted CHL free agent). That's 9 players out of a 22 man roster that have been selected by this team (now, mind you, Horvat was counted too but picked by the previous regime -- though he was developed by THIS regime). That's nearly 50% and that's helluva impressive. If you count Lockwood and Dipietro as guaranteed callups this season that will bring the number up to 11. When in Canucks history have up to 11 homegrown guys played on this roster at the same time?!?!? Sure, the Canucks flamed out on Juolevi and Virtanen but a lot of teams miss in the upper rounds of the draft. The Blackhawks whiffed on Jack Skille and Cam Barker in the era when they were picking high but hit on Kane, Toews, and Seabrook. The Penguins whiffed on Pouliot, Angelo Esposito, and Ryan Whitney at a time when they were drafting the likes of Fleury, Malkin, Staal, and Crosby high. It happens to all teams. The fact is that Petey, Hughes, and Boeser all hit and they hit big. Rathbone looks like a steal and will probably have a better career than Juolevi. Juolevi, ultimately, wasn't the right pick and wasn't the right fit. Between injuries and Covid, it just did not work. It just makes sense to give him another chance elsewhere. I wish him luck but this move isn't an indictment of Benning's draft. He's done good work. Benning hasn't been the absolute best in the league but he hasn't been terrible either (Gillis lost his job because he couldn't draft to save his life). In fact, Benning is probably the best consistent drafter in Franchise history. In fact, I think moving on from Juolevi shows that this management group has matured and learned from their mistakes. Instead of holding on hoping for something to happen that wasn't going too, they cut bait and are moving on. I'm glad this won't be a conversation going forward and I wish Juolevi the best of luck wherever he plays going forward. Same as I hope we find a gem or two in the players coming our way.

Juulsen has already cleared waivers so he can move back and forth between Vancouver and Abby pretty easily right now. Also a BC kid. Hopefully he's got some fire under him to make an impression with his hometown team. I like Lammikko too. Probably explains why Di Giueseppe was waived.

I really like Jacob MacDonald. He's had 43, 42, and 55 point seasons in the AHL. Looked really solid when he was playing in Colorado last season. Really surprised to see him be waived. He is a LD but I'd pick him up as the extra depending on what the Canucks are getting for Juolevi. He'd be a really solid depth piece.

He literally hasn't played in the last three games (including tonight). And he hasn't practiced with the team in five days. He's M.I.A. If the Canucks can't find a way to trade him, he's getting waived. Rathbone took the 3rd pairing LD spot and Brad Hunt won the extra LD spot. He didn't play well enough.

I won't be shocked to see Logan Brown get claimed by somebody but I doubt it's the Canucks. The Canucks need a R shot Centre right now. If Brown was a right shot Centre, I'd say the Canucks would at least be looking into it. If Brown does clear, this should give the Canucks confidence that they can get Juolevi through waivers. I know they play different positions but draft pedigree does stop mattering at a certain point and Brown & Juolevi were both drafted in 2016.

Remember: If Gadj gets waived by the Sharks anytime this season, the Canucks can claim him back and send him directly to Abbotsford. Also, Kole Lind didn't get claimed.

Kole Lind and Jonah Gadjovich on waivers... it's as if it didn't matter who got claimed in the expansion team hahahaha. Players of interest: Aaron Dell won't be claimed by VAN, but could see him get claimed elsewhere. Jets could claim him if they aren't confident in Comrie as a backup. Brennan Menell had 38 points in 47 KHL games last year. Former Vancouver Giant. RD. Could slot in as a depth piece if the Canucks want to send Rathbone down to the AHL. German Rubtsov. I feel like he had a lot of hype the year of his draft. Has never put it together. He has intriguing size but not much else. Probably doesn't get claimed but I'm a little surprised he returned for another go in the NHL after a mediocre year in the KHL last season. I don't really see anyone getting claimed. Lind maybe?!? Gadjovich maybe?!? But that feels like Canucks bias on both players. Gadjovich has very limited NHL exposure as does Kole Lind. Both could use another full year in the AHL before making a go at it in the NHL.

The weirdest part of that is that Bayreuther was selected from CBJ, gets released by SEA, and then re-signs with CBJ all in the course of 8 days. I agree, Francis totally screwed himself over with the expansion draft. I know that not all 30 picks will make the team but you'd think there'd have been more deal making because of the flat cap and everything. Seattle fans are gonna be mad when the Kraken don't even threaten for a playoff spot come March.

Hell, even Jim Benning got 139 points in a season when he was playing in Portland.

Covid gave him the heart condition. He didn't get vaccinated this summer when he had the chance and this is what it cost him. Elliotte Friedman basically confirmed it here:

I believe the first round of Canucks waiver wire players will be announced tomorrow after tonight's game. A few former Canucks on this list: Jalen Chatfield, Brogan Rafferty. Players of intrigue: Kodie Curran (former SHL MVP in 2019-2020, LD), Cooper Marody (In the 2018-2019, he had 64 points in 58 AHL games, followed that up with 36 points in 39 games in the AHL last year, C -- could be an intriguing pickup if Sutter is out long term), and Sean Day (Granted exceptional status in the OHL, LD, has size but hasn't lived up to potential yet). Former waiver claim favorites Seth Griffith and Jean Sebastian Dea also make appearances today. And yikes, Senyshyn on the waiver wire. To think, the Bruins passed on Brock Boeser, Matthew Barzal, Kyle Connor, Ilya Samsonov, Sebastian Aho, and Travis Konecny to pick him. What a blunder. If the Canucks claim anybody, it'll either be a RD or a C. Don't think they'll pick anybody from this group except for MAYBE Cooper Marody.

BuT gOd GaVe ME aN iMmUnE SyStEM!!!!!!! More of a reason to get your Covid vaccine. If a "healthy" NHL player can develop a career threatening heart condition, anybody can. And this tweet sort of sums up my thoughts on this situation:

I love Lehner. He's been on the right side of history for awhile now. The NHL is such a league of conformity that it's nice to see players break that mold. We need more of that. If players don't start speaking out about issues they are passionate about, we'll keep having situations like the Jalen Smereck racist incident, Mitchell Miller situation, Logan Mailloux snafu, Chicago Blackhawks sex abuse scandal etc. In the case of the NHL, where there's smoke, there is usually fire. We'll see what gets unearthed.

Of this list, Ty Ronning is the only one that's sort of interesting. RW, was ppg in the AHL last year. Cliff's son. Former Vancouver Giant. In all seriousness, I expect if the Canucks go the waivers route, they'll try and pick up a RD closer to the start of the season if Hamonic will indeed not get vaxxed and ends up opting out.

They should be trimming the fat salaries of useless executives, not the "fat" salaries of on air talent that make a fraction of what those executives make. Why do we even have the CRTC in Canada when this stuff keeps happening?!? What a useless organization the CRTC is.

It's time to waive Juolevi. If he gets claimed, fine. It is what it is. If he's unclaimed, good, the Canucks can monitor him in Abbotsford and see where he progresses as the season goes on. Both Jack Rathbone and Brad Hunt have outplayed Juolevi so far and I don't see Travis Green giving him anymore rope. From an asset management standpoint, the Canucks waiving Juolevi early probably gives them the best chance at keeping him in the organization but it won't be a huge loss if he gets claimed. He has no trade value at the moment. Good teams don't hang onto mediocre players because of draft pedigree. They ice the best team to win. Bad teams hang onto mediocre players hoping for better. In recent memory, the Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Tampa Bay Lightning have all cut ties to underperforming first rounders. Chicago blew it with first round busts like Jack Skille, Cam Barker, Dylan Olsen, Kyle Beach, and Mark McNeill during the Blackhawks most recent run of dominance. They moved on from all those players within 5 years of drafting them. Pittsburgh blew it with first round misses like Derrick Pouliot, Angelo Esposito, Simon Depres, Beau Bennett, and Joe Morrow during their recent run of Cups. They didn't desperately hold onto those players just because they were first rounders. And Tampa Bay recently did this with first round duds like Slater Koekkok, Brett Connolly (not a dud like the others but he never lived up to being a third overall pick), and Jonathan Drouin (again, not the biggest dud and they turned him into Mikael Serguchev but he never lived up to being a third overall pick). In all these cases, those teams cut bait when it was time. It's time now. The Canucks held onto Virtanen for too long and that cost them. They shouldn't make the same mistake here. Send him down and see what happens, that's what should happen. And I know it's one game but between this game, training camp, and last season I just don't see Juolevi thriving here. He seems like he is in need of a change in scenery.

Lou won't let his players have a beard. You really think he'll let an unvaccinated player anywhere near his club which has STANLEY CUP ASPIRATIONS?!? He's the new Josh Ho Sang. No way he'll ever play a game for the Islanders with this stance, Lou won't have it. If there's one guy not to piss off in the NHL, it's Lou Lamoreillo. I do like this trend that NHL clubs are going towards... unvaccinated players, especially on the bubble, aren't even being welcomed to NHL training camps. Rinaldo, Bertuzzi, Wilde... curious who's next. It's amazing Wilde has this stance considering he was not that long ago committed to playing NCAA hockey at Harvard. How the winds have blown. I will say, I did just read an Athletic article about the NFL and its unvaccinated players and apparently the "inconveniences" placed on unvaccinated players (daily testing, can't leave hotel while traveling, can't sit with anyone) have really weighed on some vaccine hesitant players and they're starting to get vaccinated in record numbers because the isolation was getting too tough for them. Also certain players who weren't vaccinated were getting fined heavily for doing things like not wearing a mask for a minute and other stuff and that caused some players to get vaccinated too. At the end of the day, we have vaccines that are safe, they work, are FDA approved (Pfizer is), and make life easier for everyone. This isn't a human rights issue. These are grown men getting paid ungodly amounts of money to play a sport. This isn't the sword to die on. For anyone. Professional athlete or not. I just hope the Canucks get to 100% vaccination rate before the start of the season.
