Snowfall Warning for Coastal British Columbia

Active for next 12 hours

Locations: Metro Vancouver; Greater Victoria; Fraser Valley - west including Abbotsford; Sunshine Coast; Southern Gulf Islands; East Vancouver Island; North Coast - inland sections:

10 cm of snow inland and over higher terrain. Lesser amounts near the coast. 20 cm of snow near Stewart.

A cold air mass has settled over the South Coast this morning in the wake of a weak Arctic front out of the British Columbia Interior. A low pressure system approaching from the Pacific will spread moisture across the region beginning late this evening and into Friday.

With the temperature forecast to hover near zero, the precipitation is expected to start off as snow for the majority of the South Coast. Furthermore, snow is likely to continue falling through the morning commute on Friday. As the wind picks up later Friday morning, snow should change to rain near the immediate coast. However, further inland and over higher terrain, snowfall accumulations will probably reach 10 cm or more before tapering off to light rain or drizzle by late Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, near Stewart the same frontal system will give total snow amounts up to 20 cm by Friday evening.
