hockey21383
whooooooooooo!!!! Hello Hamhuis, bye bye Bieksa Our D is gonna be so deep next year it's not even funny
Nuckle_Up
In truth yes our D looks pretty solid. But so much hype over Hamhuis needs a contrarian. Let's not forget that in Nashville he lost his top 2 spot to Suter and Weber, they simply outplayed him. For this defence to be one of the best next year, we'll need Edler to really step up to that #1 or #2 spot back there. Failing that and we'll have several #3 and #4 d-men masquereding as #1 and #2's. That's the risk with where we are, but hey, there's only so many Drew Doughty's in the league. On the positive side, both Ballard and Hamhuis are young enough that their game may not have peaked yet. If they can hit a higher level, this defensive group will be fun to watch. Regardless of the above, I'd say the Nucks are better than last year on the back end. Now, will they play as top 5 in the league? October's so far away.
Patrick Kane
I remember how excited we were last year. Mitchell - Salo Ehrhoff - Bieksa Edler - O'Brien Lukowich, Schneider, Rome now Hamhuis - Ehrhoff Ballard - Salo Edler - Bieksa (for now) O'Brien, Alberts, Rome

UFCanuck
Really happy that we got such a character guy and great all-around d-man. Just looking at what some other guys got, Leopold-3M, Lydman-3M YIKES! Very happy about this, still hasn't sunk in.
Neomop
No star, top 1-2 defenseman still (Pronger/Niedermayer/Lidstrom type), that was what I really wanted to see. But still, the defensive group is so deep right now it's not even funny. You could move any of them anywhere in the 6 and still be just as good (well maybe except Bieksa )

TotesMagotes
Wow, Canucks just got instantly a LOT better in the last week. We gained Ballard, Malholtra and Hamhuis, 3 players guaranteed a roster spot. We gave up Grabner, who we probably wouldn't have had room for next season. Bernier, a player who never lived up to his potential and never really found a spot on the team. No big loss there. We lose Bieksa most likely, a guy who really only hurt the team with his defensive breakdowns and became a little redundant last season with the acquisition of Ehrhoff. Plus we will get something back in a trade....though i'm not expecting much. And Mitchell, who probably wouldn't have come back next season anyway, and whos best days are behind him. Great job Mike Gillis, you really do know what is best for this team.
luineul
The OP should be edited so people don't have to search for all the details, but this is a good signing for the Canucks. Something around 4.2 mill was probably the most ideal for both parties, but 4.5 isn't bad. Gillis is winning people back after the Grabner trade. i am a beast
It will be interesting to see what he can do, since he isn't stuck behind Suter and Weber anymore.

UFCanuck
Well, now we have a lot of assets to trade for that #1 defense if the opportunity arises. Also, if Chara hits the FA and wants to go to a different team, we could be able to afford him with expiring Erhoff and Salo contracts. Maybe next year, we could upgrade our defense even more with: Chara-Hamhuis Ballard-Edler We could still upgrade on our defense this year if a team want to trade their #1 D for more depth but there aren't a lot of those D-men available in the market. absent
Love this signing. Got a guy who fits our needs, and got him at a fairly reasonable price because he actually really WANTS to be here. Win Win basically. This signing really made me refrain from calling Gillis some incredibly impolite names after the absolutely terrible Malhotra signing earlier. The Honey Badger
i don't know if this has been shown, but if hamhuis can hipcheck dustin byfuglien, he can pretty much punish any player.
UFCanuck
It's feels pretty good that he turned down bigger offers from Pitt and Philly. As well he chose us over L.A. Could you imagine playing against L.A if they got him. Now he can shut down Kopitar.
