[Report(s)] Zach Parise Discussion thread

Recommended Posts

While it is universally agreed that Parise would be an awesome addition to the Canucks (understatement), a lot of questions are raised in acheiving such a deal. 1. He s still recovering from Knee surgery. Not expected back till at least march.2. He becomes an RFA at the end of the season. What kind of deal is he looking for?3. Cap space is an issue. Who stays and who goes?4. Although we have expendable assets, what becomes too much of a price to pay?5. With so many young players in our system close to ready for promotion (Schreider, Archibald, Jenssen), do we really need him if we can promote from within and make it cheaper? Hmmmm.

With the rising salary cap, what once seemed a financial pipe-dream seems more and more possible. I guess it will depend on how this season progresses.

1) Will the league be making more money - a big source coming from the money-pit Thrashers suddendly turning into the cash-cow Jets? Or will the falling Canadian dollar and the stale US economy end up lowering the cap next season? If it's the latter, getting Parise in under the cap will be a tight squeeze.

2) How will our young guns do? I still doubt Gillis will trade Hodgson. But if he plays very well, then some other guys - like Schroeder - look a little more expendable. And you have to think an impressive showing by Jensen this year makes it a little less important to hang on to a guy like Rodin. And then again, how well will guys like Schroeder and/or Rodin play? Because if they come up lame, they won't have trade value anyways.

3) How will the Devils perform out of the gate? If they are in the playoff hunt, they will likely stay the course with Parise. He's RFA at the end of the year, so there is no rush to trade him before then. However, if they are out of it, negotiations with him are going nowhere, his performance is costing them a better draft pick, and teams are offering a premium to acquire him for this playoff run, then they may consider it.

4) Lastly, does anyone think that Parise himself would take a deal in the 6.1 range, even to play with a bonafide contender? Because I don't think Gillis would be in a rush to pay a new guy substantially more than the twins.

If everything goes well - with finances, our prospects, Devil's losses, and Parise's contract - then maybe...just maybe...there's a chance. Another key factor is if/when/how Raymond returns. If he comes back and is still the player he was, at least he'll have some trade value. Under those circumstances, a Schroeder + Raymond + Schneider package may land Parise.

Uh-oh

Zach Parise could be playing his final season with the New Jersey Devils, and if it is, he'll do so wearing a "C" on his sweater.

The Devils made the 27-year-old Parise the ninth captain in team history Wednesday. Forwards Ilya Kovalchuk and Patrik Elias were named alternates.

The Devils had been without a permanent captain since trading Jamie Langenbrunner to the Dallas Stars last season.

The move comes after Parise signed a one-year contract this offseason. Parise will become an unrestricted free agent after this season, but has said both his agent and the team will work on a long-term extension during the season.

As per the collective-bargaining agreement, Parise can't sign a new deal until after Jan. 1.

  • 3 weeks later...

Depends all on if Nj wants Schneider, if they do all they have to offer us is Parise.

It makes sence for them, they have been demolishing the franchise a little bit at a time. Parise is in his prime he wants to play for stanley cup contender's, last years lottery picked showed little promise.

Can nj afford to be in a Crazy bid war?? No 102 million dollor's for Ilya

Brodeur likely is gone after this season so they would probably like to get a goalie sooner then later just for the fact you would have a hall of fame mentor.

Chances of us landing Parise goes up with every win Cory graps us.
