damn lol hate to see despite how great we've been the last month or so.. we still haven't made any grounds on the ranger.. and haven't catch up to detroit yet.. hopefully we'll finish first in the west at least.. i really don't want to have to face detroit in the conference final with detroit having home ice advantage =\

As with every thread every year, it is much appreciated. I don't personally subscribe to the black and white absolutes used to define the numbers though, I do very much like what your doing this year, and in past years.

For me, I look at roughly 46 points remaining available for every team, as of today. Detroit currently the best in our conference has won 70% of available points, the team in ninth place has won 55%. So generally I assign the best teams winning % to the 9th place team, as if they go on a streak, and make that the bar. So to show my work:

LAK in 9th place has 65 points now with 46 possible points remaining at detroits point capture rate of 70% (32 points) is 97 points.

Once the Canucks are above 97 points they are guaranteed a spot, or once the ninth place teams total points plus 70% of remaining points available is less than Vancouvers total points....you get the idea. But to finish my thought, if Vancouver needs 97 to make the playoffs guaranteed and they have 82 they need 15 points out of a possible 46 or 33% wins from here to the end. The worst team in the league has won 35% of possible points...ergo: if Vancouver suddenly became the worst team in the league, they would still make the playoffs. Therefore, we have clinched a playoff berth.

The good news is that most of the Canucks remaining games are against divisional opponents who have little to no change of making the playoffs. The Red Wings, Bruins, and Rangers, on the other hand, have the tougher schedule. It is realistic, if the Canucks continue to play the way they have, for them to clinch the Western Conference and President's trophy. Especially if they have a great road trip, and that 13 of the remaining 22 games are at home.
