Let's Face It, Kesler Is Better Suited To Be A 3Rd Line Center

OK, let me rebuttal some of the statements made after my original post.

A poster hit it right on the head, what I meant is that Kesler should be a "Checking" centre. He doesn't have the offensive skills necessary to be a scoring centre. Don't talk about getting him better linemates, he had David frickin' Booth on his wing, a 70 point player. He doesn't have the vision necessary to make plays in the offensive zone. He gains the zone and just wires a wrister into the seats. When did you actually see Kesler and Booth make a nice scoring play together?

Kesler is a pure shooter, and I can respect that. MG needs to get either a superb playmaking winger for him, or better yet, move Kesler to the wing. Was a line of Kesler-Hodgson-Booth even tried? I can't remember.

The way he plays now he is better suited to be a second line winger. 3 years ago he was a better 3rd line center. His game has changed so much that AV tries to pull him away from checking matchups. I think he is great the way he plays but AV has to put him on the wing.

i agree Kesler is a great player but maybe not a second line center. A great seconl line winger or a third line center. Ye " he had 40 goals in one season" but that is not the norm for him. How many winger have been tried on Kesler's line ??? and ot succeded. Other than the 6 great games he played against Preds , how has he done in the playoff????. His personality is not of a leader , he would be a better player if he had more of a smaller role on team.

Yea I said it. Let him shut guys down on the 3rd line and put up 60 points quietly. When you put too much pressure on him he crumbles.

I know what everyone is gonna say, "But he had 40 goals 2 seasons ago!". Yes, but that was an anomaly and a result of a ridiculously good power play.

What hurts so much about this is that we lost Hodgson who could have been our 2nd line centerman and got those cushy offensive minutes.

Looks like everything rides on Schroeder and his ability to develop. I've seen his Wolves highlights and the kid has got great vision and playmaking ability. Love to see what can do with the likes of Booth and Higgins on his wings.

But overpaying for role players is what the Nucks do

Malhotra - $2.5M for face off specialist

Ballard - $4.5M 3rd pairing D man

Booth - $4.25M for 15 goal scorer

Kesler - $5M for shutdown centerman/diver extraordinaire

Raymond - $2.5M does nothing

Sedins - $12M - can't score in playoffs.

Too many passengers on the Nuck's bus.

Since when is "didn't get as many goals/end up high enough in the depth chart to justify the paycheque in some fans' eyes" a role? Also, can you tell me how getting a point per game = "can't score", particularly when the entire team only got 8 goals in 5 games?

To quote MG: "there clearly were issues that were ongoing. I spent more time on Cody's issues than every other player combined, on our team, the last 3 years. Me made a determination that he didn't want to be here, we built him into something that we could move".

As others have said in the past, he played some pretty sheltered minutes, probably to pad his stats a bit and make him more attractive in a trade. Sure, you can move the guy up to the 2nd line and MAYBE he will stop whining so much and he MIGHT succeed... at least until him and his agent figure he deserves to supplant Henrik on the first line. But then this would be at the success of Kesler's minutes, and it's still a gamble. No matter what you do, it's a gamble. They clearly decided that he wasn't worth the headache, and the return they would get from the trade was sufficient.

Few third liners score over 40 goals in a season. And let's remember what Barry Trotz said after Kesler's remarkable series against Nashville two seasons ago:

"As I said when I was going by him, if he doesn't play that way, we're probably going to Game 7 and we might win this series, but he played to a level that few people can reach in a series. ...He was a force the whole series. We've used multiple people against him."

"He had one of those series that is absolutely remarkable for one player."

So in your words, let's face it, third line players don't receive comments like that from opposing coaches, and especially not in the playoffs.

Clearly Kesler's skating wasn't 100% and he came back too soon. Only in he last couple months did his skating start to come around and then he had a shoulder issue. We trade this guy we regret it.

You are ridiculous. I'm disgusted by these so called fans. These fans are the reason why our organization comes across poorly. We really need to step up for our team and believe in our players! im proud to be a canucks fan and will always be no matter what, but these topics and these "fans" are horendous! To most of those that believe in our players and the team, you guys are awesome! Kes is definitely a second liner, no doubt. GO CANUCKS GO!

I am excited to see he and booth play next year, because they have agreed to train together in the summer to develop chemistry. I think that a guy (doesn't have to be specifically him) like Thomas Plekanec would complete that line well. A play maker with finish.
