Washington Capitals News and Notes:

Forwards:

* After Jakob SIlfverberg's injury a hole opened up in the Capitals top 6 forward group. The coaching staff minimized Gagner's minutes in his first game back but would like to get Gagner back in the groove of things sooner rather than later. Gagner has been maturing into a leader throughout his time in Washington and was named an assistant captain after the team bought out the contract of Roman Hamrlik in the offseason. Gagner will line up at the left wing position on the second line.

* Highly touted 22 year old forward Chris Kreider is starting to show some confidence with 2 goals and 3 points since being called up from the AHL. Kreider will be given an opportunity with more minutes now on the teams 3rd line.

* Fan favourite Rob Klinkhammer has slowed down over the past couple weeks offensively and seems to be more comfortable playing 4th line centre for the Capitals. Klinkhammer fits this role very well for coach Bruce Boudreau due to the teams lack of NHL bottom 6 centres.

Defense:

* After a somewhat slow start, Keith Yandle has picked up his pace and has now become the most productive player on the entire Capitals roster. Yandle is in a contract season and you can be sure that da.moose will do everything in his power to lock up the star defenseman long term as soon as he gets the opportunity.

* Ryan Ellis is proving that he belongs in the NHL and the team is hoping to see more offence out of him moving forward. Ellis will see increased minutes due to the teams lack of production coming from the backend.

* Veterans Sergei Gonchar and Kyle Quincey are both currently underproducing on both ends of the ice. These two veteran players must improve if the Capitals hope to compete with the top teams in the league.

Goaltending:

* With Devan Dubnyk's injury Thomas Greiss played well last night and impressed the coaching staff. Greiss will start in net until Dubnyk is healthy and 100% ready to go.

Washington Capitals Lineup:

Evander Kane - Pavel Datsyuk - Patrik Elias

Sam Gagner - Kyle Turris - Brad Boyes

Chris Kreider - Andrew Cogliano - Rene Bourque

Justin Fontaine - Rob Klinkhammer - Zack Kassian

Jordin Tootoo, Richard Panik

Tobias Enstrom - Keith Yandle

Ryan Ellis - Kyle Quincey

Sergei Gonchar - Mark Fayne

Vancouver Canucks October News and Notes

While it has been a bit of a slow start for our team as a whole, there has been a lot of positive signs from both our defense and forwards going into the second month of the season. Let's take a look at some of the positives and a few points of constructive criticism:

Forwards

- Our top line of Jamie Benn, Matt Duchene, and Daniel Alfredsson has been nothing short of outstanding for us. Ever since training camp, they have found chemistry among the three of them and while they may not produce as often as some may like, the process and work ethic has exuded on the side of dominance every game.

- Our young forwards in Sven Baertschi and Tomas Tatar may not be producing as some may like, but their work ethic in both the offensive zone and defensive zone has been encouraging. We know that the production will come with them sooner than later, but it's nice to see that they can hold their own consistently now. Look for young stalwart, Gustav Nyquist, to be recalled soon (come on Kenny Ken Ken).

- Mikko Koivu and Peter Regin have been producing at a consistent pace and we hope they continue this through out the year as they are key pieces to our forward group.

- One player that has been looking forward to turning the calender to November has been Eric Fehr. Eric has come into a new organization where we've implemented a new system and he's also living in a new city with a different lifestyle. We hope that he's finally starting to feel comfortable as we brought him in to be a top six forward on this team.

Defense

- Young defenseman Brenden Dillon has been simply outstanding so far this season. Going into the year, we were not completely sold on having him in the fourth slot because we gave him the same opportunity last year and his game dipped a bit with the added pressure and expectations. Suffice to say, he came into camp determined to earn a top four slot and he has grabbed that opening and run with it. We are very proud of him and he has earned his keep as a top four defenseman on this team for good.

- Meanwhile, his partner, Slava Voynov, has had a bit of a slow start offensively, but we are not the least bit concerned. Every player goes through doldrums, but the positive is that he hasn't forgotten how to defend in his own zone. He will be fine and still have the utmost confidence in him as a person and player.

- Recent free agent acquisition Ben Lovejoy and young defenseman Michael Stone have had a bit of a slow start with inconsistency at both ends of the ice. We are still confident that they can both turn their games around and be important depth players on our blueline through the season.

- News to no one: Alex Pietrangelo and Zdeno Chara are rock stars

We hope to pick up the pace a bit this month and hopefully continue our climb up the standings.

CAROLINA HURRICANES

3 STARS OF OCTOBER

1st Star- James Wisniewski

James was outstanding in the month of october. He is leading the Hurricanes in points with 9 and has stepped up as the number 1 defensemen in Carolina.

2nd Star- Andre Benoit

Coming into the season there was a lot of question marks about the Hurricanes Defense, but Benoit has been a pleasent surprise. With 5 points in the month of October he has been producing offensivly and has also been responsible in his own end with a plus 3 rating.

3rd star- Nathan Mackinnon

Mackinnon came into the NHL by storm by getting 7 points in his first 7 games. He has cooled off since but is still tied for 2nd on the team in scoring.

In the month of October Carolina had

22 Goals

53 Assists

75 points

-17 Rating

278 PMI

30 goalie points

So the bottum 6 forwards have been carrying the team right now. The big guns and the goalies need to start producing points if Carolina wants to be a playoff contendor.

We give Carolina a C rating, while it is improvement they are losing ground quick with their big guns going cold this month.

Minnesota Wild 3 Stars of the Month

1st Star: Frans Nielsen

Nielsen was absolutely incredible for us this month, scoring 7 goals and potting 8 assists for 15 points on the season in just 12 games. He had a total of 62 pool points this month.

2nd Star: Corey Perry

Perry has been a beast, putting 6 in the net and adding 7 assists. He has been racking up the powerplay and shorthanded points as well and has put up 14 PIMs. He had 79 pool points this month

3rd Star: Patrik Maroon

Maroon was a pleasant surprise for us, scoring 2 goals, 2 assists, and 17 PIM's for a total of 24 pool points this month.

Minnesota had a late month surge from 28th to 24th, but much needs to be done if they are going to be a playoff team. The Wild need guys like Michalek, Versteeg, and Leopold to step up their production big time and Marty Brodeur needs to rack up the wins fast. In the month of October Minny made some moves, first shipping Keith Ballard and Damon Severson to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a cap relief move to make room for young guns Ryan Murray and Hampus Lindholm to step in with the big club. The club also send Devin Setoguchi to Montreal in exchange for top prospect Corban Knight, shoring up their organisational depth at center.

Tampa 3 Stars for November:

3 *** Victor Hedman

- with 1 goal, 4 assists in 12 games, Hedman's contribution from the blueline was essential with the injuries to Boyle and Josi. Hedman rewards us with this gem in hopes of moving up the 3 star rankings for November:

http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/?id=473861

2** Kyle Okposo

- with 4 goals and 8 assists in October, he only trailed Captain and fellow linemate John Tavares by an assist. Kyle's going to be a key player going forward in our club as he will need to overcome past consistency issues. We have full confidence in his growth as a player.

1* Tomas Hertl

- Tomas is the NHL rookie of the month and our leading goal scorer. We paid a hefty price to acquire him and so far, he has been as advertised! Tomas has brought a new excitement to our organization and with his 8 goals in October, he is our first star of the month! Who could forget this gem:
