Is it time to stop rewarding failure?

The whole point of the salary cap is to make every team competitive, protect financially fragile teams, to eliminate the Yankees-Pirates dilemma in baseball.

It's the same for the draft, when you reward the worst team with the 1st pick, it's the same idea, give every team a chance to rebuild.

If you want to stop rewarding the losers, then what is the point of the salary cap, might as well scrap that as well.

i still feel the league rigged crosby to go to the penguins that year. you just have to know with no superstars in that town something had to happen.

They had Mario. But they sucked for alot of years. Picking Crosby, Malkin, Fleury & Letang, didn't exactly hurt them...the difference between the pens & oil? Well the pens didnt accept losing for more than a year or two and drafted all positions. The oilers kept drafting forwards even though they had Eberle, Hall, Nuge, paarvi & omark. They held off trading guys like hemsky, horcoff & smyth. Murray would have been the better pick 2 years ago for them as it looked obvious that yak would compete for second line winger. Tambellini ran the team horribly & Mac T made a horrible choice on Eakins. Mac T was a wayyyyg better coach than anyone they've had since. But they had the same opportunity the pens had, just the pens GM (Shero)had enough balls to make changes as soon as something wasn't working & did not accepting being a loser.

While I am not saying the Oilers management is any good I disagree on the whole Shero/Penguins thing (also not agreeing that it was rigged like the other suggested).

No team had the opportunity the Penguins had because that entire teams success has been on the backs of Crosby and Malkin. No Oilers even come close. With two extreme talents down the middle like that they enhanced the average players around them and took pressure off of other prospects like Staal who just had to worry about being a line 3 center. The offense itself protects the defense because they control the puck well and simply limit a lot of shots taken along with dictating games where they often get early leads. Despite MAF praise as a goalie his career has been very average overall statistically speaking Craig Anderson was much more reliable in his career. And despite the 8 completed seasons since Crosby's debut they have 1 cup which is nice but seems odd given how well they play in the season followed by playoff meltdowns that always start at the defense despite often being the top scoring playoff offense. If they stopped ignoring this they may have won more.

But really my point is the Penguins weren't propelled by smart choices they were propelled by having 2 of the best players in the world fall into their lap. Edmonton would only be comparable if they drafted say Stamkos and Tavares back to back. But Pittsburgh seems pretty dumb to me. Last year #1 offense and #12 defense so they trade for Iginla and Morrow. The year they went after Hossa... #6 offense and #17 defense. This tends to be the general pattern they follow.

My system would not allow for repeat picks over a 6 year period.

that should include 3 teams from each conference

using the Oil as an example

Come in last in 10, win lottery, draft first, pick Hall

come in last in 11, be exempt from picking first, come in second in lottery pick second, (no Nug)

come in last in 12, be exempt from picking 1st or 2nd, come in 3rd in lottery pick 3rd, (no Yak)

if you can manage to come last for 7 years you get another shot at 1st overall.
