2014 IIHF World Championship Thread (Bieksa named Captain)

The width of the Intl rinks weed out marginal skating skills and elevates the importance of stick skill- maintaining possession of the puck.

The North American game relies upon and emphasizes brute force to retrieve and possess the puck.

I prefer to see skills displayed.

Describing a physical game as 'brute' force is one way I guess. In my day a physical game required skill and determination as well. Not as much of the cheap shot stuff that you see today. As Cherry has said for decades restrict the size and armour out of the equipment and see what happens. To me the essence of hockey has always been the compete between speed and the physical play required to limit that speed.

Speaking of ridiculously long, the NHL playoffs began April 16th and will end in mid-June.

Last year it ended in the last week in June.

The NHL should use a different format to end the season in May again.

What a great way to spend a Sunday morning. I love international hockey!

Me too, just wish I'd been more on the ball...was up early making coffee but somehow thought it was a 10 start. Great action in the 3rd here...will be a barnburner finish!
