According to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: (Oilers GM Craig MacTavish Q & A)

Q: About that No. 3 pick? You’re not of a mind to give it up, are you? What about moving up to No. 1?

A: There will be some interesting discussions. I’m not sure where that’s all going to go. This year, you certainly don’t know who’s going to be the best player. Nobody’s clearly ahead of the others. There’s arrogance if you think that’s the case. There’s going to be a positional bias with teams. It’ll be a positional determination for any team in the top four or maybe five. Our need is defencemen and centremen, but not necessarily in that order. We’ll get one of those needs satisfied at this draft.”

MacTavish said that Sam Gagner hasn’t asked for a trade. Added they need a blueliner that can go north-south with the puck. Their blueline as a whole needs to move the puck better. The Oilers are without a second and third round pick, and MacTavish would be surprised if he could add one, “The value of draft choices at the trade deadline is at the bottom. At the draft, the value is high.”

Too bad he didn't think this in 2012 and draft what the Oilers needed instead of the person who was thought to be the best in the draft.

Double Coverage

New Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving is sitting pretty comfortably heading into Friday's NHL Draft.

Holding the fourth overall pick, Treliving is confident he can improve his club one way or another - be it by selecting fourth or making a bold move.

Treliving told the Calgary Herald Sunday that he likes his options in both scenarios.

"We'll look at anything. Moving up . . . again, what does it cost you? Does it make sense? . . . Whoever shakes out at four is going to be a good player," he told the Herald's Kristen Odland.

"But you also can't be fearful of making a big move because you think it may turn out wrong," he added. "If you think it makes sense, you do it. You don't do it because, 'What if it goes wrong?' You do have to have courage to do things."

Back to Backstrom

Teams in need of a veteran presence in net may have something to talk about with Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher.

Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune writes that Fletcher "may be willing to retain salary and cap space to trade goalie

Niklas Backstrom, who is recovering well from season-ending abdominal and hip surgeries."

Along with centre Kyle Brodziak, Fletcher may be a prime candidate to make some moves leading up to, or on Draft Day itself.

But Fletcher admits that it's tough to get things done before hitting the draft floor.

"Everyone calls everybody," Fletcher told Russo. "You don't see a whole bunch of trades the week prior to the draft. It's all about trying to figure out who your likely dance partners can be the week at the draft. It'll take a move or two to get the ball rolling, and then there's usually a domino-type effect. We're not there yet."

Crow Nesting

Marc Crawford's name has popped up as several teams have filled or are looking to fill coaching vacancies early in the off-season.

It appears, though, that you can scratch his name off any and all candidates lists as he will be heading back to Switzerland for the 2014-15 season.

Crawford is going to remain as head coach of the ZSC Lions of Swiss Elite League, the team announced via Twitter on Sunday. The Lions are the reigning Swiss title holders.

He became GM in 2013 so Darnell Nurse was his first pick. Not bad.

He had an executive role in 2012 but I'm not sure how much input he had into drafting Yakupov. I would say Steve Tambellini should take the axe for that.

Honestly. I don't think Tambellini was allowed to make any decisions on his own.

It is hard to believe that one man can make so many bone-headed moves on his own.

According to Will DePaoli of Inside Pittsburgh Sports, Penguins GM Jim Rutherford is getting interest in James Neal, but he hasn’t indicated to inquiring teams that he’s open to trade him. Neal has four years left on his deal and his no-trade doesn’t kick in until July 2015. The Senators could be interested in Neal. The Penguins have only one draft pick, No. 22, in the first 122 selections. Rutherford has told scouts that he intends to pick a forward at No. 22.

According to Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger, Devils GM Lou Lamoreillo said it’s unlikely that they will use their remaining compliance buyout. It’s also not looking like Martin Brodeur will be back with the team.

“It’s unlikely,” Lamoriello told The Star-Ledger. “No decisions have been made yet. We still have time on our side, but it’s unlikely.”

“Marty has made his decision,” Lamoriello said. “Quite frankly, I’m not going to make it a difficult topic.”

Lamoreillo on if he has any intention of trying to re-sign Brodeur,

“No one rules anything out.”

According to Ansar Khan of MLive, potential targets for the Red Wings. Khan thinks they’d land a secondary scorer in Jussi Jokinen or Matt Moulson on a shorter deal than it would take to bring in a Thomas Vanek, Paul Stastny, Ryan Callahan or Marian Gaborik. If they were to offer a big, longer term deal, it would have to be someone like the 28-year old Stastny. They are not likely to add someone like Steve Ott. Matt Niskanen and Andrei Markov are not really No. 1 defesemen, but they will end up getting paid like one. The Red Wings are likely to look at the cheaper Dan Boyle, Anton Stralman, Derek Morris, Tom Gilbert and Stephane Robidas. Khan doesn’t think they are willing to part with the assets to land a Dustin Byfuglien or Keith Yandle.

Duck Calling

With several marquee centres available via trade and expected to be available via free agency, the Anaheim Ducks could be primed to be big players in the coming days.

According to The Orange County Register, the Ducks could be in on any number of big name middle-men on both markets.

With two first-rounders - 10th and 24th overall in Friday's draft courtesy of the Bobby Ryan trade - and a host of young roster talent, the Register's Eric Stephens identifies Ryan Kesler, Jason Spezza, Paul Stastny, Eric Staal and even California rival Joe Thornton as possible targets for the Ducks.

Out for Number 1?

TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger appeared on TSN 1050's Mike Richards in the Morning on Tuesday and stated that the Florida Panthers are still taking calls on the first overall pick in Friday's draft.

Dreger said that all reports at this point indicate that the number one pick is definitely in play and that Panthers GM Dale Tallon has indicated that the team would n0t be willing to go below eighth overall on the draft board.

I

t is worth noting that the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs all fit within that range.

Plan B's

The Boston Bruins are planning for the off-season under two possible scenarios: with or without Jarome Iginla.

According to the Boston Herald, Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli is weighing out his options in both scenarios.

While the team would love to bring him back, his 30 goal-season will make him an expensive option to retain and the team is also penalized by the bonuses he earned last season (upwards of $4 million) that will be taken out of this season's cap.

"There will be hard choices, but it may be that we don't make hard choices and we keep as many people as we can and we go into the year and maybe we do make those hard choices as the year progresses," Chiarelli told the Herald. "It may be that all these things happen at training camp, it may be that all these things happen in November. . . . I think a lot of people think that these hard choices get made July 1. Choices do get made July 1, it may be that we can't sign Jarome, it may be that we go in a different direction, it may be that we can't sign Player X or Player Y."

On the Wing

After dealing Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets, new Philadelphia Flyers GM Ron Hextall will be on the lookout for options at left wing.

Philly.com's Sam Carchidi speculates that Hextall will look to fill that vacancy via free agency.

Candidates floated to fill out the forward ranks include free agents Mike Cammalleri, Matt Moulson, Benoit Pouliot or Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mason Raymond.

Hextall wouldn't close the door on more deals, though, telling Carchidi: "We'll keep our ear to the phone and see what's out there."

According to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times, while they seem to have hope that they can make a deal, and progress has been made, the Lightning and Ryan Callahan don’t appear to be close on an extension.

“It’s at a critical stage where we have to find a way to close the gap,” Bartlett said.

At this point it seems likely that Callahan will at least test the market to see what comes his way. Teams are allowed to speak with free agents starting tomorrow, and agent Steve Bartlett expects to hear from teams.

“We’re never going to close the door on Tampa,” Bartlett said.

According to Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Blackhawks have a hole in their No. 2 center slot, and sources are saying that GM Stan Bowman is at least thinking about making a major move at the draft. If the Blackhawks were bring in a big piece like Ryan Kesler, Jason Spezza and Joe Thornton, it could cost a piece of their core, with Patrick Sharp’s name being kicked around the rumor mill. Paul Stastny is another big option if he hits the open market. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are expected to massive contract extensions this offseason. They wouldn’t kick in until the following season, but it’s something they’ll need to take into consideration.

They have to lose a Sharp or Bickell to make that work.

Although Richards now is a game changer on the market for Ottawa and Vancouver in terms of potential return

Richards a game changer? He was a 4th line player on the rangers basically a non playoff team.

OK you totally read that wrong. In terms of potential return. Spezza and Kesler are the big names to be had right? Well....people seem to forget Brad Richards is also now a UFA and can be had for FREE

That is a game changer for teams looking for big return

Stastny is an impact. But Spezza and Kesler are the two players on the market, UFA or by trade, who can potentially help teams to win the most! For teams that need defence (Pitt / Chicago / prob Anaheim) its Kesler. For teams that need offence (St Louis) its Spezza. And Kesler's cap hit leaves more of the team in tact just as much as not giving up assets. And St Louis is down on assets after Miller, so prob more likely to go after Stastny?

Richards is a secondary market at this stage.

Kesler remains the prize IMO!
