The Rangers didn't trade Mats Zuccarello on Sunday. That's because a contract extension is imminent for the Blueshirts' top-line right wing. The Daily News has learned that Zuccarello, 27, and the Rangers have agreed on the numbers of a four-year, $18 million extension ($4.5 million per year), and all that's holding up the deal are negotiations on the forms of protection in the contract, such as a no-trade clause. Zuccarello, the only active Norwegian NHL player, would be taking significantly less than the $5 million-plus he had expected to command on the open market as an unrestricted free agent this summer. A no-trade clause would complete a give-and-take between player and club - money for security. The Daily News first reported on Sunday afternoon that the Rangers had resumed their contract negotiations with Zuccarello. After the most recent breakdown, Sather had informed other NHL teams on Saturday that Zuccarello was on the trade market, and Alain Vigneault had cautioned no one to underestimate the GM. Sather wanted to survey all of his options, since it will be difficult to re-sign all of his key pending free agents this offseason knowing the NHL salary cap may not rise much from the current $69 million ceiling. Martin St. Louis (UFA), Derek Stepan (RFA) and Carl Hagelin (RFA) top that list. St. Louis would not entertain a question on Saturday about whether he'd be willing to take a pay-cut next season to fit a player like Zuccarello into the budget. But thanks to some compromise from the man they call 'The Hobbit,' the Rangers should be able to re-sign one of their most popular and valuable players. Once this deal is finalized, it will guarantee linemates Derick Brassard and Zuccarello being under contract together for the next four seasons, with Rick Nash - their current left wing - under contract for the next three. 4 years, $4.5M per. Solid deal. Zuccarello is pretty loyal considering he could've made $5.5(+) in the open market with teams being desperate and blindly throwing around money more than ever now days. VanIsleCanucks
This makes me think Matthias will be looking for 4 to 4.5 ....oh boy.
TheNorwegianCanuck
So happy for this! The only Norwegian in the NHL is here to stay. Partial NTC as well. Here's to hoping Zuke continues to put the points up! Good bang per buck for NYR as well, if he continues to produce, as he will!
D-Money
This makes me think Matthias will be looking for 4 to 4.5 ....oh boy. Matthias and Zuccarello currently have the EXACT same number of career points. Difference is Matthias has played 390 NHL games, Zuccarello 203. If anything, this should be a sign that Sean shouldn't expect any more than 3.

You've been passed over by the Danes, Germans, and Swiss. Heck… there are as many NHL players from Italy, Austria, Slovenia, and France as there are from Norway right now. elvis15
3rd paragraph of the article: Uh, that still didn't clear anything up. Your title says [re-signed] but it also says 'close'. Same thing with the quote, 'agreed' and 'pending'. @KatieStrangESPN: Rangers and Mats Zuccarello have agreed to terms on a four-year deal worth $18 million. Bolded was said in that paragraph referenced...the numbers were agreed to, "all that's holding up the deal are negotiations on the forms of protection in the contract, such as a no-trade clause." But it's all cool

elvis15
You see what I'm saying though - "it's done except for..." means it's not done. What if they couldn't agree on the NTC provisions?
