(Proposal) VAN-WPG

Recommended Posts

It seems as though Benning may, or may not be sold on Kassian which is a shame, but if he's not there's one player I'd want Benning to poach from the 'Peg before he hits UFA: Michael Frolik

The guy is 27, so right in his prime, gritty and looks to be a decent 20 goal scorer with some playmaking ability.

Obviously Frolik as a pending UFA isn't worth a whole lot, certainly not worth Kassian straight up so this is a deal I'd look at doing:

VAN

Frolik

2nd round pick 2015

Conditional 2nd round pick 2016

WPG

Kassian

Conditional 4th round pick in 2015 or 2016

The condition being that Benning is able to sign Frolik to a contract extension prior to July 1st. If he's able to sign Frolik prior to the draft in June, then that 4th round pick becomes a 2015 4th round instead.

If Benning cannot re-sign Frolik, then Chevy gets no draft pick, and instead gives us an additional 2nd round pick (in 2016).

So the following scenarios could play out:

1. Kassian and a 4th in 2015 or 2016 for Frolik (signed) and a 2nd round pick 2015

2. Kassian for 2nd round picks in 2015 and 2016

What this does is two things: further solidifies the middle six depth supporting the Sedins and frees up Vrbata to play full time with the twins, and relieves pressure on Jake Virtanen to "have to make the club" to get some grit and competitiveness into the line up.

Next year the forwards would look like:

Sedin - Sedin - Vrbata

Baertschi - Horvat - Frolik

Burrows - Bonino - Hansen

Higgins - ______ - Dorsett

It also gives Benning a couple more picks to restock the cupboards with. Gaunce, Jensen, Shinkaruk et al all get another year in the AHL, McCann and Virtanen another year in Junior and a chance to dominate for Team Canada at the world Juniors

Isn't Frolik an FA? Why would we trade for an FA?

Lol read the damn OP. It's a move to get a chance to negotiate with him and lock him up before any other team has an opportunity. If he refuses we end up with two 2nd round picks which at this stage of the game is about fair compensation for Kassian straight up.

That comment might have merit if Kassian actually played physical. It's been said over and over again, and proven... that's not his game. He's not a power forward, he's a finesse player in a power forward's body.

Yes, Kassian is strong, and yes he can fight, but fighting means absolutely nothing in the playoffs. Kassian has proven nothing in terms of being able to play physical even BEFORE his back injury.

Ask Kesler how physical Kassian is.

Are you daft? It's to sign him before he can receive any other offers from other teams. We do this because he's one of the few players that we actually need on this team.

I'm not sold on Kassian being anything other than a 3rd line player with some skill. In the event of having to shuffle lines around, I feel an awful lot more sure of Frolik on the Sedins wing instead of Hansen.

Frolik is also defensively sound, and having that on the 2nd line with Horvat can cover for any deficiencies in Baertschi's game. It also further solidifies our bottom six, where Hansen, Higgins and Burrows all belong at this stage if we're going to be a "competitive team".

Just to give people a little insight into Frolik, as I watch him on a regular basis.

He is not only the Jets best two way player, but probably one of the best penalty killers in the league. Led the Jets in shorthanded goals and is a great team guy.

The huge negative is that he's going to be seeking around $5M per. Sources say the Jets have zero interest in giving him that amount with the term he's looking for. Canucks should stay away.

In a related note, the Leafs are rumored to be looking at Frolik, and are expected to hand out a 7 year contract at $10M per.

I agree with everything you say here, the only thing im worried about is how much he wants $$$

Have you considered the implications of adding $2 million to $3 million to the Canucks' salaries against the cap?

This deal could depend on whether Canucks can make some other moves to clear cap space.

Kassian's got a pretty bad injury (bulging disc) so honestly may never be the same again after he (hopefully) has surgery to repair it. Back problems are rough for such a physical, young kid, so maybe now's the time to get the most out of him.

That being said Frolik is nothing special, and we have kids who can eventually become gritty 20 goal scorers (Shinkaruk if we're lucky in a couple of years time).

If we're dealing with Winnipeg I want one of their young, physical defencemen. They got shelled in the playoffs but they like big, strong, physical forwards so maybe Kassian will fit in there.

Kassian + pick for Trouba?

Unless that pick is a top 5 pick in this years draft, the Jets are not trading Trouba.

The discussion around Winnipeg right now is "Who do the Jets trade Byfuglien to and what should they be targeting in return?" Also, it is already believed in Winnipeg that should the Jets trade Byfuglien (likely), the top pairing will be Trouba paired with either Morrisey/Stuart/Chiarot, followed by Myers and Enstrom. The talk out of Winnipeg was that the Jets most stable defenseman in the playoffs was Trouba. And at 21 years of age and his first playoff outing, he played incredibly well. Winnipeg really wants to shelter Myers and Enstrom going into next season, as Myers is still trying to regain confidence after his time in Buffalo, and Enstrom has been an absolute mess the last 2 years.

While it's only been 3 years since the 2012 draft, as of right now, if the same teams had to do it over again with what they know now, you would see Trouba get drafted a little higher than 9th overall. Long story short. No deal.
