NCAA FAs - Troy Stecher

Recommended Posts

5'11, 192lbs RHD never looked more appealing. Offensively talented; defensively a small workhorse that will fight for puck possession and use every inch of his body to gain leverage. Moves very well and has great vision. Offensively, something special. He can snipe bullets and find elusive passing seams and lanes that not many other defencemen would try. He can play in all situations and excel.

I would say he's pretty NHL-ready. He plays a well-versed two-way style and might benefit from a year or two in the AHL. He's looked excellent the last couple years though, and the only knock on him would be his size, but he plays through the adversity. Who knows what he could turn into?

Other notes:

  • has attended a Canucks camp in the past
  • '94-born, 21 yrs old
  • BC-born

Little scouting report from 2014

http://www.sbncollegehockey.com/nchc/2014/12/4/7330989/north-dakotas-troy-stecher-becoming-a-top-free-agent-prospect

Sounds like he could be a Biega type defenseman, small but bullish on the puck who uses his quickness to close gaps and play aggressive, but with more offensive talent. This 2014 article has him at 5'10" and 190 lbs so maybe he could even grow another inch and gain another 10 lbs from his already 5'11" 192 lbs. Wishful thinking haha

Quick questions: Are college free agents available to sign right now or is it a few weeks away?

technically speaking, they could.  but it's extremely unlikely as the post season tournaments are getting underway soon.
