Replaces Darryl Sutter, who was fired after Los Angeles missed playoffs

The Los Angeles Kings hired John Stevens as coach on Sunday.

Stevens has been part of the Kings coaching staff since 2010 and has spent the past three seasons as associate coach. No contract terms were disclosed.

Stevens replaces Darryl Sutter, who was fired on April 10 along with general manager Dean Lombardi.

"John and I had very productive dialogue this last week in relation to his head coaching philosophy," Kings vice president and GM Rob Blake said, "and specifically how he would implement a strategy to activate our players offensively while maintaining the defensive philosophies we have come to be known for. I am confident that we are both in agreement on how that can be executed.

"With that said, we believe John has the ideal qualities to lead our hockey club. His wide array of coaching experience, including success as an NHL head coach and his inherent knowledge of our players and those in our development system, is very appealing to us. We are confident he is the best person to lead our hockey club forward."

Stevens was hired by the Kings as an assistant on June 24, 2010, and was named associate coach in 2014. He coached the Kings for four games during the 2011-12 season after Terry Murray was fired and before Sutter was hired, going 2-2-0, and was a member of the staff that guided the Kings to the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014.

Before coming to Los Angeles, Stevens was named coach of the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 22, 2006, and guided them to the Eastern Conference Final in 2008. Stevens was fired after the Flyers went 13-12-1 to start the 2009-10 season. He is 122-111-34 as an NHL coach.

Los Angeles finished this season 39-35-8, fifth in the Pacific Division and eight points out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
