Popular Post Kurisu
Pictured: The beloved Wayne Simmonds says goodbye to Philadelphia FLY ER DIE: LAST TRAIN HOME The Flyers have completed their trade deadline business for the year, with a total of 5 trades completed. Alexandre Burrows and Michael Del Zotto were shipped off for a chance to play, Jordan Weal was a victim of roster crowding, and in traditional Flyers fashion, 2 more goalies joined. The most significant move saw the departure of core player Wayne Simmonds to St. Louis, with Dennis Wideman also heading to Missouri. In clear tank-minded moves, Michael Del Zotto and Alexandre Burrows were sent for future considerations to Arizona and Edmonton respectively. Del Zotto was performing decently as the team's #3 defenceman, while Burrows was having a respectable season on the 4th line. Brandon Manning and Chris VandeVelde were recalled to help fill the gaps in the roster. Next, Jordan Weal was sold off to Ottawa for a 3rd round draft pick and Chris Neil. Weal was having a strong season on the 2nd line, and had seemed to find great chemistry with Sean Couturier. Unfortunately for Weal, he was not seen as a long-term fit there, with Oskar Lindblom and Travis Konecny expected to enter the NHL next year. The veteran Neal will serve as a warm body with some extra sandpaper. Steve Mason was sold to Montreal for a 3rd rounder and prospect Charlie Lindgren. Brian Elliott was sent to Dallas in exchange for Antti Niemi. Both moves appear to significantly weaken the Flyers goaltending options, with management hoping for as many losses as possible from here until the rest of the season. Handsome lad Louis Domingue was plucked off waivers to serve as backup. Finally, Wayne Simmonds and Dennis Wideman were traded to St. Louis for a very good package of Nail Yakupov, Carl Gunnarsson, and a 1st round pick. Simmonds was having another great season, and will hope to give St. Louis a push towards cup contending status. Carl Gunnarsson is expected to be a reliable depth defender for the remainder of his 3 year contract. The enigmatic sniper Nail Yakupov will be given a golden opportunity to earn a new contract, as he is expected to slot in on the 2nd line next to Sean Couturier. The Flyers sit 10th last in the league with a dismal 25-27-8 record. Despite solid seasons from many core players, the team simply could not overcome their weak goaltending and defence this year. Fans will now surely be looking forward to the draft lottery.
